i saw that new movie "the ring" yesterday, along with digsy and iwantelvis. i don't know what it was, but i found this movie absolutely terrifying. i'm usually not easily shaken by scary movies, but this one definitely got me. so i was wondering if any others have seen this movie and, if so, what they thought about it. and, in the spirit of halloween, what are some other movies that scare you? unsure.gif

Well the ring was terrifying...at least the parts I saw of it. I kinda do the nerdy thing and peek through my hands during the scary parts. Oddly enough the wet hair was the worst part. It was just to much. But I recommend going to see it, I'm sure the rest of you guys are far braver than I am.

the fact that i catch myself thinking about this movie randomly and getting freaked out tells me that it is, indeed, scary. but that's just my opinion. and i have noticed that alot of females do like horror films. i can't speak for the whole gender, but i like 'em simply because i think it's fun to be scared, as dorky as that sounds.

The Ring was scary...the first time that I saw Alien really really freaked me out too. Scream was kinda scary, but usually movies that involve normal people killing other people (Scream, I Know What You Did Blah Blah, Halloween, Friday the 13th) they don't realy scare me near as much as supernatural or aliens. Aliens scare the beejezus out of me, especially the real aliens (the grey ones with the big eyes). Rosemary's baby was pretty odd...and I still need to see the unedited Silence of the Lambs.

And yes I did say real aliens...I am a total geek. blink.gif

The Exorcist is the only movie that has ever scared me. Demonic possessions and the like always tend to get to me.

I do want to see The Ring though. Since I am leaving on Wednesday, it will probably be a while before I actually get to.

Well after IWantElvis and HaveSomeSoma's making fun of me because I was scared by Signs more than The Ring, this is welcome news. The Ring was pretty creepy, but Signs and aliens in general just weird me out worse than anything.

I really want to see The Ring, but haven't had a chance to yet. I generally don't find alien/extraterrestrial stuff very scary. I'm more of a devil/demon/religiously-scary-movie type of person; however, I don't think The Exorcist is that scary. I think it is a bit overrated. The number one scary movie on my list is The Omen. I also love Rosemary's Baby. If you like vampire movies, you should check out Martin. It is quite scary. Of course, eventhough I do love a good ol' terrifying horror movie, I also love bad funny ones. I go to movie rental stores and just pick out stupid looking horror movies when I need a good laugh. Or just look at the cases, titles, and tag lines. One of my favorites... Title: House; Tagline: "Ding Dong. You're Dead"
But what will happen to the boy when the circus comes to town?

I know what you mean. We once rented "Blood Orgy of the She-Devils" for the sole purpose to make fun of it. After watching the first hour, I must say that there was little blood, no orgy, and the she-devils were very very tame. Ah well...the title alone was worth it. And then there's the time we rented Blackula...

i know, its crazy, they got the whole damn nation in on it. it was a well made film, because until the secret got out (cough cough, they were guest starrinf on jey leno) it really seemed like a documentary.

the cool thing is, while the whole background story, scenario was not real, all of their reactions were real bc the director administered it all by leaving them little notes and shit all over the campsite, (scay woods, set, whatever) and they really were lost and the noises really scared the fuck out of them. genius film making if you ask me. ph34r.gif

I'll just toss in that I hated The Blair Witch Project and while it was innovative in it's filmmaking, it was not scary at all. Oh no! Sticks! Oh no! A baby crying! Ah fingers! And then the camera falls to the ground. Oh the horror...

But I mean, Signs scared me.

I think if you really "get" The Blair Witch Project, then it shows that you have a lot of imagination. No offense, but I get really upset when I hear, "Blair Witch Project!?! That movie sucked! You didn't even get to see the witch once! It was just a couple of kids running around in the woods." I grew up in the woods and I can totally relate to what it feels like to be out there at night. I was terrified when I first saw the movie. I literally got chills the first 4 or 5 times I saw the last scene of the movie.

I heard about it being a sham before it came out. They talked about it on some special about movie festivals (Cannes or something?). But I also heard how it had been unscripted for the most part and was really intrigued by the concept. I also loved how they promoted it (like posting "missing" signs of the kids). I feel like they waited a sufficient time before letting the actors start making public appearances.

I watched my copy again after returning from the Haunted Woods friday night in my bedroom by myself with the lights off. Of course, it loses it's charm when you know what's going to happen, but it still has an exciting feel to it. I made sure to go immediately to bed right after the movie finished. No nightmares, though. Oh well.

Oh I have a (very) overactive imagination and I do agree that not showing the witch was a smart move. Rosemary's Baby was creepy because the baby and Satan are not shown or only shown from certain angles.

Then again, I have never been lost in the woods so...I guess I couldn't relate. It just seemed quite boring to me...like watching someone's home movies (which is what they were going for). There was just too much of...not enough. I like the "leave it up to the imaginatino" technique, but that movie just did not work for me at all.

Yeah, I feel the same way. I like it when movies leave certain things up to the viewer's imagination, and a good imagination... I do have. However, The Blair Witch Project just wasn't very scary to me. And I'm not one of those people who is always saying, "Horror movies don't scare me", I just really didn't like it at all. I respect the whole leaving notes around the site thing, but entertainment-wise it's probably one of the worst "scary" movies I've ever watched, and I have watched plenty.

My friend Jon and I were discussing The Blair Witch Project the other night. He and some friends downloaded it before it came out and when everyone thought that it was real. He said that he had to walk one girl out to her car after it was over...And, she was just parked across the street.
Anyway, I liked that movie. I figured it was going to make me dizzy or sick (as most home movies do), but I got into it. I let my imagination run wild, especially at the end when the camera drops. That was the freakiest part for me.
As for Rosemary's Baby..Yeah, that was creepy. I rented it last year and watched it alone on one of my "I don't feel like talking to anyone" days. I had forgotten how much it weirded me out.
And, The Omen is the movie that scares the crap out of my mom. I haven't even watched it yet. It's always the movies with demons/possessions that freak me out. I love being scared.

Yeah, I can see what you're saying. I wasn't trying to be insulting or anything. The real disadvantage to the "home movie" feel was the extreme nausea that resulted the first time I watched the movie. When I saw it a second time in the theater, I took a small dose of motion sickness pills. True story.

Oh, and by the way, I agree that Rosemary's Baby, The Omen, and The Exorcist are very well-done, creepy movies.

I agree. Rosemary's Baby is an amazing movie, and is pretty freaky the first time you see it.

I was intrigued by the concept of Blair Witch. It was a neat little film, and quite a well done film, but not a film that I would want to see again (I only saw it once, in the theater). I saw it after I knew it was fake, so it didn't scare me a bit. If I would've seen it under the pretense that it was a real documentary, I would have been scared shitless.

i agree that movies are a helluva lot scarier when they dont show the ghost, witch, whatever. an image on a screen can only be so scary, but if they dont show you its left up to you and your imagination and your imagination can be terrifying.

once i saw the alien in signs i wasnt scared anymore at all. it was all the scenes that almost showed him that made me nearly wet myself.

I went to see The Excorcist a few years ago when it was re-released to theatres. Halfway through the movie, I started getting all fidgety and having hot flashes and stuff like that. I thought I might have been possessed by a demon. But I think it was just a huge sugar rush because I ate a whole box of Air Heads and drank 44 oz. of Mountain Dew while watching the film.

That's funny, I could have sworn both Sphere (the novel and the movie) and Event Horizon were terrible rip-offs of Solaris (the novel and the movie). Check it out (the book or the original movie, not the new George Clooney movie coming out).
