Okay, I just got my new issue of Spin in the mail and they have a list of the top 40 heavy metal albums of all-time. Their number one pick: Appetite for Destruction by Guns and Roses. This was selected over Led Zeppelin IV and Paranoid by Black Sabbath. I would just like to say for the record that I believe that Led Zeppelin on their worst day could still kick the shit out of "GNR" on stage and in the studio. Jimmy Page is the greatest hard rock guitarist in the world, you cant honestly tell me that Slash is better than Jimmy Page and that Axl Rose is a better frontman than Robert Plant. People are always saying how Guns and Roses are the greatest hard rock/heavy metal band ever. I think they're full of shit. Zeppelin are the true kings......

As much as I love GNR & treasure Appetite as one of my favorite records of all time, they're just not heavy metal. So they have no place on that list.

I love Led Zeppelin IV and I love Appetite, but neither of those albums are metal. Let's talk about some real metal artists:

(early) Metallica
Iron Maiden
Slayer
Judas Priest
Black Sabbath
Motorhead
W.A.S.P.
Megadeth

For me, it doesn't get any more metal than early Metallica - 'Kill 'Em All', 'Ride the Lightning', and 'Master of Puppets'.
Relevant: Prince, PT Anderson, Punk, Post-Punk, Purple, Party of Five, Peter Swanson, Peter Gabriel-led Genesis, "Peter Panic", Paul's Boutique, Potential Energy, Every Features MB member but me.

"run to the hills" by iron maiden is the greatest metal song ever. i've heard a rumor that the boys in slack have been known to cover this.
