I'm moving soon. When Token and I bring all of our CDs and books together, there will be many many doubles. Due to space and other issues, we won't keep the doubles. I don't want to mess with eBay or Half.com or anything, so...

Where in town gives the best money (or trade value) for used books and CDs? Where all do you go? Good slection for the trade-in is a plus, but not necessary.

anywhere you go you aren't getting more than 4-5 bucks per cd.
We have about 1500 songs.....all of them good!

I usually go to Hastings because they give a lot of in-store credit for CDs. Since I buy many magazines, DVDs and comics, it's a good deal. Plus they usually give $2-4 per CD, more towards $4 if it's in-store credit.

It's just been 5 years or so since I've sold a used CD, and it was always in Knoxville or Chattanooga.

4-5 sounds good for me. That's what I was hoping for, unless someone knows of a place that can do better...

What about books?? Great Escape doesn't seem like the type of place that would take a lot of books (we'll have more duplicate books than CDs)

That's funny- my new husband & I went through the exact same thing. We went through this laborious process of determining whose were in better condition. Then we had to decide which of mine were "allowed" to be integrated in to his alphabetic system (talk about a music snob!). Same thing with the records, except my collection kicked his collection's ass. We ended up just giving away duplicates to our friends & siblings because they generally were not in good enough condition to sell.

It took us 15 minutes over the phone this morning to decide on most of the books. Our CDs are quite different, and as long as the CDs remain in their proper jewel cases when not in the player (or other receptacle), I'm fine with alphabetically (so I can never do autobiographical like I've always wanted) joining our CDs.

Mine are in autobiographical order. By looking at them, you can see the evolution of my tastes. My first three were Real McCoy Another Night, Bon Jovi Crossroads, and TLC CrazySexyCool. My last three have been Starlight Mints Built on Squares, Television Marquee Moon and Clinic Walking With Thee. I don't know what made me decide to keep them in this order when I first started getting them in 5th grade...but it pleases me to know that I have the same ordering system as John Cusack in High Fidelity.

I once used that system, but as my collection grew, I found that putting them in alphabetical order makes things much easier for me to find.

I'm way too organized.

I had never heard of putting music in autobiographical order until High Fidelity. I didn't think anyone really did that. Mine are alphabetical by artist, then chronological by release date. Sometimes it can get tricky, though. For instance, I have Ben Folds Five, Fear of Pop, and Ben Folds' solo album all as "Folds" in the order, just because it's easier to find that way.

Relevant: Prince, PT Anderson, Punk, Post-Punk, Purple, Party of Five, Peter Swanson, Peter Gabriel-led Genesis, "Peter Panic", Paul's Boutique, Potential Energy, Every Features MB member but me.

My first three CDs were Whitney Houston at the tender age of 5. Man, I loved her. I thought it was the coolest thing that her charecter in The Bodyguard was named Rachel. I don't know what CDs I got between then and 5th grade when I hit the CD jackpot.
You're so fucking money you don't even know it

I always forget about that place.

It seems every one on this board has sold CDs, but never books. What is the deal??

You mentioned Chattanooga, so I'm assuming that you've sold books/cd's at McKay's. That's where I always take my old books and cd's. I actually use my store credit there when I get stuck with only that. I just buy tons of other books and cd's. That's the best place, I think. Definitely in Chattanooga.
Why would you do that?

I guess I could wait and do McKay's next time I'm in E. Tennessee...thanks for reminding me!! They'd probably be the best for the books. I'll probably do the CDs at Grimey's or Great Escape.

This is interesting- we've debated a lot about it & we have them all under the B's right now, but I think the F's make more sense.

Silly triplets- you would already have all the good CDs. We handed them down to those who needed an education in quality music. Giving them to you would be like preaching to the converted.

I highly recommend this place if anyone needs to shed some books in the near future. They will take anything and at least give you in store credit for it. We took about 60 books (mostly old college textbooks) and got about $45 for them, which is more than I expected. My sagging bookshelves are very thankful.

if i want to find Out Of Time by REM, I have to remember that i bought it for someone in the fall of '95 pile but didn't give it to them for personal reasons.

my cd's aren't really organized right now. when i moved in novemberthey got tossed around from one box to the other but now they are on the tower but not in any order. i've tried to do the autobiographical thing but somewhere between '96 - '00 is a blur.
We have about 1500 songs.....all of them good!
