What would be the one thing that you would save, if possible, if your house/apartment caught on fire, that isnt living?

If I had to grab something and get out I would either save my Gwen Stefani painting (its really pretty and was really expensive), my painting my grandfather left me (sentimental value), pictures (also sentimental value), or my really huge beatles poster (it's just cool). Anything else can pretty much be replaced.

I would also try to get my computer.

But, if I could take my dogs with me I would definatley get those first.

a not living thing is a good call in terms of this question bc first and foremost, i would choose anakin (my cat) ande im sure everyone else would.

see this is a difficult situation bc there is a difference in things i could feasably salvage and things i would like to salvage.

for example, i couldn't carry my keyboard down 8 flights of stairs but hypothetically, yes, it would be the first thing i would save.

second would be my huge truck full of all my journals.

third is my stuffed teddy bear, pinky bear, that i have had since i was 8.

other than that...four track tapes and photographs.

but in reality, I couldn't save any of this, except for my teddy bear.
thank you for being a friend.

i would say my cd/dvd rack, but that's been moved to another location, so, my guitar and amp.
you're everybody's second home
always trying to get me alone
an easy way to lose it all
always there when all else fails

I would take my photograph of me getting blessed by Pope JPII when I was four, all photo albums, and my purse/keys/checkbook.

I would open up my window and start throwing as many comics as I could out the window. Those must be saved. Of course my dogs will be saved as well.

poor kitty

Ever since my kitty ran away, I don't really own anything of value. In fact, maybe I should just walk the Earth... You know, like Kane on Kung Fu.

They've got a name for people like you. They're called bums.
I TOTALLY AGREE!

Keith, you are destined to rock. Never forget this.

I often think about this exact question. I would take my box of Elvis Costello stuff. And my Care Bear Grumpy. Other than that, it's all replaceable.

i really don't know that there's that many irreplacable things that i own that i would want to carry out with me. i have a big box-o-pictures that i would probably grab. my purse. i'd probably grab an armful of clothes so that i'd have something to wear while sorting through the rubble. i have a fire-safe box with all important documents in it.

a serious tip that everyone should take into consideration: take the little time and effort needed to walk around your house with a video camera or regular camera and take an inventory of your belongings. a friend of digsy, iwe, and myself recently experienced a housefire. she had to spend countless hours filling out the super long insurance forms that must be completed for each individual item they wanted to claim. a simple video inventory (kept in a fire-safe box) will save many hours/days of insurance claims torture after a fire. you never know what could happen.

But wouldn't the tape go up in flames, or is that supposed to be something we would save?

Seriously though, this thread has intrigued me. I have inherited from my dad, RaDaDaDa Foolery, an enormous sense for all things nostalgic and sentimental. However, I find it strange that when presented with this question, I find that I don't seem to care about possessions or "irreplacable" things. Yes, pictures would be difficult, but I can't see myself risking escape life to grab things like that. I guess I've surprised myself with a lack of materialism (at least in this hypothetical situation).

I know what you mean. When someone asked me this question last night it was really hard for me to answer. Even out of the things I listed, I could live without them all. There is stuff I would want to keep like my stereo, cds, computer and what not just because I know it would be a really long time before I got new ones after a fire. I think about that while packing as well. I'm always scared I'll leave something that I can't "function without" but then I realize anything I left I could just buy a new one.

There are some things that just fall under the category of "convenience," like Token mentioning check book and keys and such.

In a weird sense, losing things is positive. When my car was broken into a few months ago, I definitely gained a new appreciation for having a car CD player as I drove in silence to work for weeks before I replaced it.

if you had read closely, mr. da, you would see that i suggested that the tape be kept in a fire-safe box.

biggrin.gif

but i suppose saving it would work too.

Read closely?? HA! I scoff at such a concept, unless it's for the purpose of pointing out grammatical errors. biggrin.gif

Do you mean grammatical errors like the one shown above?

Once I knew my animals were safe I would start by trying to save my Blythe dolls, my Beatles memorabilia, Strokes autographs, my boxes of pictures, some of my Strawberry Shortcake stuff, my stuffed animals, my big vintage wall hanging (but it probably wouldn't even fit through a window), my big-eyed girl paintings, my Beatles bootlegs...Oh, and all of my vintage dishes I've collected over the years...Then, I would try to throw some of my clothes and shoes out the window...Obviously, I'm too indecisive and have too much stuff. I would more than likely die or be badly burned in the process.

With all this stuff I would definately just suggest you start trying to put out the fire instead.
