TOPIC: VH1 and it's failures

On the way home from the ville of Knox I randomly started remembering all of VH1's old programs. So, in honor of the struggling times that they are having now, I thought it nice to look at their other failed attempts to gain ratings.

Name That Video-hosted by the girl who is hosting the new Junkyard Wars on TLC. This was a good show and it did boost my confidence since I could name 90% of the videos. The lead singer for Vertical Horizon was good at the game

My Generation-I can't remember much about this show, but didn't it go along the lines of old people vs. young people answering questions about each other's music? Of course it was canceled because it beared a striking similarity to Versus (hosted by Greg Proops) on Comedy Central. That was a good show...

Cross Roads-VH1's 120 minutes, except for 30 minutes and it came on at 10:30 PM. Before I owned Morning Glory I used to stay up late and wait for this to come on so I could see Champagne Supernova and DLBIA. They also devoted a whole episode to the Gin Blossoms and introduced me, sadly, to Dishwalla, Sister Hazel and matchbox twenty

Music Patrol/Cop Rock/Something-I have no idea what this show was called BUT it had Wayne Brady and another guy dressed up as cops and they would bust into people's homes/cars and make fun of their taste. Wayne Brady sang "Some Might Say" on one ep. I thought the show was funny...

Lift Ticket To Ride-VH1's version of MTV's beach house....but colder. Fond memories because the Gin Blossoms did a concert from there. Man I was a lonely 6th grader...

Video Timeline-a 30 minute block of videos with a timer counting off moments in the artists' career.

Didn't VH1 have a cartoon at some point? And that question leads me to the biggest of VH1's failures NOT because of poor quality but because they canceled the show. If anyone knows me then they know what this show is...

Late World With Zach. Damn VH1. Damn them to HELL for canceling Zach. Zach did "rule me" (© StephanieW) for the 9 weeks it was on (March-May 2002) and I do have 24 of the 36 episodes on tape thank the maker.

Well please add. This old memory of mine needs some jarrin'....

I always enjoyed 80's Pop Up Video. That show was the first time I ever saw the "under pressure" video. I was also very fond of "storytellers" back when it used to have cool people on it like pete townsend and ray davies (not me, the other more famous ray davies). I, too, was also a fan of "late world with Zach". I alsways loved that show and was very heartbroken to find out that it had been cancelled. VH1 sucks now. It's almost become the bastard son of MTV. All it shows now is Sex in the 90's.

8 Track Flashback is responsible for 70% of my knowledge of music pre 1980 I must say. And of course I loved Pop Up Video. Where o where did it go?

VH1 has it's own plethora of shows to rerun, I don't know why they have to show MTV's castoffs. If VH1 ever shows Taildaters, I'm never watching again.

pop up video was ok, but the noise that the popups made was rather annoying. the only one that i really remember is the aerosmith crazy video. ms. silverstone was looking nice.

My favorite Behind The Musics would have to be...

1. Oasis-Was there any doubt? I showed up late for a school fundraiser just so I could watch this when it first premeired on that Sunday morning. It is the funniest, cursing-est, and bestest BTM made.

2. Milli Vanilli-Four words repeated sum it up: "Girl you know it's-girl you know it's-girl you know it's-"

Other favorites have to be REM, Def Leppard, Boy George, Vanilla Ice, MC Hammer, The Go-Gos, Styx, Journey, Lenny Kravitz (Solil Moon Frye?!), and 1992. BTM has supplied lovely memories and lovely trivia over the years.

Top 5 BtMs

01 MC Hammer (Okay, I know, but the riches to rags factor is just so high. And there's that part where Arsenio Hall pauses the tape to point out Hammer's package. Plus, I always love to hear that guy say, "but you better watch out, 'cos they're lining up again," refering to the stars, and hinting that Hammer was about to have a comeback. Ha!)

02 Motley Crue (the epitome of rock'n'roll decadence)

03tie Bob Marley (I actually like this one because it's really informative, and I love learning more about Bob's life)
and
Badfinger (I agree, this was one of the saddest stories in rock'n'roll. I never really knew much about Badfinger until I watched this)

04 Milli Vanilli ("Girl you know it's, Girl you know it's, Girl you know it's"....I've never laughed so hard during a BtM as I did when I first saw that footage)

05 1992 (Okay, maybe I just like this one for the sake of nostalgia. I loved reliving 1992)

Honorable mentions: the Black Crowes (lots of drugs, fighting, and swearing), Rick James (more drugs, prostitutes), Studio 54 (funny costumes, and ahhhh...drugs), Blues Traveller (you know which part...HILARIOUS).

(Edited by jamiecarroll at 8:34 pm on Sep. 5, 2002)
Relevant: Prince, PT Anderson, Punk, Post-Punk, Purple, Party of Five, Peter Swanson, Peter Gabriel-led Genesis, "Peter Panic", Paul's Boutique, Potential Energy, Every Features MB member but me.

i thought that footage of milli vanilli was funny too, but i would have enjoyed it more if vh1 hadn't dubbed in that audio. maybe i'm wrong but the footage was from a camcorder or something low quality like that and the music sounded DI'ed. oh well.
