TOPIC: Vines conquering America

I just got the new Rolling Stone in the mail today (the subscription came with my car stereo oddly enough) and on the cover are the Vines with the caption "Meet the Vines: ROCK IS BACK" and in small print "with The Strokes The White Stripes The Hives."

Okay....I like the Vines okay and all...I don't think they suck (their live performance does leave something to be desired) BUT they are definitely NOT the ones "bringing back the rock." In this whole "garage rock scene" I would compare the Vines to STP back in the Seattle days: they're coming in a tad late and they aren't that spectacular compared to the preceding bands. The coverage on the White Stripes/Strokes Radio City Music Hall concert is enjoyable as is the page interview with Pelle...but there are about 7-10 pages of the Vines...all this coverage of them is making me like them less and less. They don't deserve any of this credit...give it where it's "due."

And there are also pictures of Axl Rose and I think he wears a fake forehead now...

i completely agree with all of digsy's statements (especially about the plastic forehead laugh.gif ). the vines certainly are not worthy of yoinking the spotlight from great bands like the white stripes, the strokes, and the hives. i guess we can all thank the folks at rolling stone for that one. however i will be purchasing this issue for the little white stripes/strokes action that it does have. it's a cruel and vicious cycle... dry.gif

I hate the Vines with a passion. I think their music is mediocre and they suck! I hate it when Rolling Stone licks the ass of whatever is popular. They even praised Nickelback for christ sakes. I've always trusted Spin's opinion over Roliing Stone's.

Spin bashed Heathen Chemistry and they always seemed to know/think that they are cooler than everyone while still putting crap like Eminem, POD, System Of A Down etc in their "Top 40 Artists That Matter." But overall I enjoy Spin a hare more than Rolling Stone.

But Q is tops...

That's the only thing I hate about Spin. I hate their year end lists. Come to think of it, I hate every magazine's year -end lists.

And I must say that Q is fucking awesome.....

Yeah, Spin definitely has a superiority complex. It bugs the Hell out of me.

Don't forget that fucking Dashboard was on that top 40 list too, in case you didn't have enough reason to doubt it. I will toss in, however, that Eminem is an artist that matters, whether I can stand him or not. But POD? Please.

What bugs me is that I've always lived with this depiction of Rolling Stone from the 70s, challenging artists to satisfy them and determining what it was that people found in the music world in a very rightous way. Now it seems that they cover what people already like and assure them that its good.

You may like grandma's yard gnomes, but I've seen Rock City. Remember it.

Rolling Stone & Spin both sold out long ago, my friends. Mostly, they just want a hot young chick or three on the cover to sell magazines. If hot chicks are not available, they'll settle for whichever band is currently commercially successful. The journalistic excellence that once ruled their pages still shows its face every once in a while (RS still has some great interviews occasionally; Spin did a great story on Latino Morrissey fans not too long ago), but for the most part, Rolling Stone and Spin are the periodical equvilents of MTV and MTV2, respectively.

I like Q, Select, Mojo...all that British shit. Stateside, I also really like Magnet.

By the way, I think that Eminem and System of a Down are both artists that matter. POD? Nah.

well said, jc. magnet is by far the best, although it needs to be a monthly publication. no depression is great if you like that kind of thing. you can never go wrong with Q or mojo either. i accidently nicked the new Q (with chris martin on the cover) from books-a-million. i swear it was not planned, i just get lost sometimes.
You know you have problems, with both money and alcohol, when you find yourself shoving beers down your pants outside a Features show.

I can see where Eminem can "matter" but I just really really hate System of a Down. I guess I should give them props for using different time signatures and etc but the band themselves and the music is just so retarded to me...I like POD more that SOAD. Come on, who here hasn't hummed "Alive" or "Boom"? Um...come on....who hasn't? Um...okay well...I'm gonna go retreat to the closet now...mmrr....

This reaffirms that Q is the best magazine in the world. On this month's cover is The Hives and it is awesome. The pictures in the 3-4 page interview/article are bloody amazing. I want one of them in poster form. Also they name Oasis the tenth band to see before you die and rave about them (I'm always up for POSITIVE Oasis reviews). Of course, AC/DC is #1 so that leads me to believe that it is just a list and not in any sort of significant order (the Hives were 50)

There's also a big pic of Meg White, who I think is quite cute so that was nice. Also the Rush Of Blood To The Head review is good reading. Overall, this issue of Q is worth the $9.00 that one must pay for it.

Okay, I think we know who is to blame for Julian's leg-breaking. Fab Moretti said this statement in this month's Q:

"He dislocated his knee-he was wrestling a very big guy. It was TomFoolery."

So, to quote the great Desi Arnaz, "You got some 'splainin' to do"

I saw AC/DC at Murphy Center at MTSU in 1996. Let me tell you, there is no other concert like it in the world. You should definitely see them before you die (or before Angus Young dies).
