call me an idiot, but are you saying that the red rose cafe is gone for sure, or that you think it might be gone because they took their site offline? I'll drop by there tomorrow on my lunch break if no one knows. But i have a feeling, someone here can elaborate much more than i will be able to...

It would make a bigger splash than that if it closed. Looks like trouble with the site to me.

I was just told that the business was seized by the building owner and is to be kept open.

I can't confirm this as a fact so please someone check this and validate this post.

I don't think that a "save the red rose" show would be able to do anything.

Apparently, the word on the street is that it's under new management and everyone was fired... i hear that they're trying to make the red rose into a starbucks like environment for professionals and whatnot... which means no shows...

but don't take my word for it. All I know for certain is that when I stopped by yesterday, there were a bunch of cars (which was odd when i realized that they don't open till 6 on Sunday) and no one around, with a sign on the door about renovations and the red rose being temporarily closed.

what's the best way to kill the red rose? remove bingham and mike.

so that's the bright idea they had. and guess who won't be stepping foot in that place ever again?!?!?!?! ME

sorry murfreesboro, but the only place in that town that doesn't suck no longer exists. murfreesboro sucks.

and all of middle tennessee is screwed out of having a place to see great fucking bands.

I was going to write something about this right after the last time I posted (Sunday) but I just figured it wasn't relevant enough to the Features, and didn't feel like getting attitude for it.

"what's the best way to kill the red rose? remove bingham and mike."
Or have them run it.

Wait, weren't you banned from the Red Rose anyway?

Yeah, this does really suck. First the Slow Bar and now this (not to mention 328 and Lucy's/Indienet). Why don't they just shut down the fucking Exit/In (again).

From what I've heard it'll be uniforms and new furniture, no tatoos or piercings. Basically it's going to be a Starbucks. Bah, humbug. I'm sure bands like Of Montreal will still stop there to play... unsure.gif

there should be a press release coming out later today or tomorrow. there was a meeting last night to figure out what to do about everything. the rose is gone for sure. it's going to re-open in a week and almost everyone will be gone. anyone who will still be there will have any tatoos or piercings covered up at the request of the new owner. the new owners showed up and tore down all the band stickers on the wall without any respect. they threw away fliers that bingham had saved over the years, and there are no plans of the rose ever being a rock venue again. it's being taken over by homophobic traditionalist christians (no offense meant to any christians on here... but you know what I mean). they are going to turn it into an italian restaurant. i hate them.

we have to band together and make something new happen. there may be a funeral for the rose on this coming saturday (the day it re-opens). if there is going to be, then I or someone will let everyone know. please come if there is one.

this sizzucks. does anyone have any opinions on whether or not you think they'll actually get any business after the reopening?...just considering that most of their customers were loyal college students who would more than likely not enjoy the new atmosphere. but i guess something did have to be wrong with business beforehand for this to happen?

also, who likes italians anyways?

I think of my first date with Token. We drank Rolling Rocks and listen to the Features under the stars. It was the first time they played there. How sad.

There's nothing in Murfreesboro other than MTSU. There is no other clietelle.

I may be answering my own question here, but what ever happened to Sebastians? Was it that Bingham left there?

The only thing I can do is echo everyone's statement that this totally sucks in every way, shape, form and fashion. Honestly, the fact that the Features are supposed to play there soon didn't even come across my mind until well after I heard this. The Red Rose was just plain cool and I'll never forget all the many interesting times I've had there. I'll be down for a funeral, especially if there is damage to the new manager's property involved.

And...Murfreesboro sucks now...man...there is nothing to do...and no more polar bears! What the hell? This is retarded...if only Liv Tyler, Anthony LaPaglia and Renee Zellweger could come by and help us save our scene from corporate yuppiness...

I had a dream about Red Rose last night. We all went to say goodbye because we knew it was closing down, and I stocked up on all my favorite dishes...spinach deluxe, vegetarian chili, peter pan polar bear, go nuts, the good cream cheese...

...no more...no more...no more good vegetarian food, no more good shows, no more good hanging out... I feel very sorry for the nice people who worked there, too, of course...very very sad. If I had known that the Imaginary Baseball League show would have been the last, I would have savored it more. sad.gif sad.gif sad.gif sad.gif sad.gif

As much as I'm sure they sympathize with Bingham and crew, I would think they also feel compelled to please the fans by going on with the show. Of course, playing the next night in nashville may make them feel less obligated to play the Red Rose. I hope they do decide to play this show and I really hope we get one of those classic Roger rants we all love.

Yes, that would indeed be great. I can just see Roger getting raw right before they close with "Action." His words will seep slowly into the owner-retard's ears and, because he has so far been amazed by the sheer rock of the Features, he will completely say "Screw Starbucks, give me Rock!" and the Red Rose will be saved.

Of course, this is wishful thinking. If the Features do play, I will be going no matter what, but I would definitely understand if they didn't choose to play...

If the Features play, you should all still go. If I were there, however, I would not buy anything. Bingham has officially said nothing bad about the new owner, but I have gathered enough information about the way the transistion was handled to make me never ever buy anything from there again. It's going to suck because some of the menu items are still available, and I love the food. I just cannot support someone who is going to actively ignore what the Red Rose is all about and expect business to continue. Some of the shows that are currently booked will go on as planned, but some bands will bow out due to these current events. I can't imagine anyone who worked for the old Red Rose booking any new shows there. I am sure that the only reason that they would allow any currently booked shows to go on at the Rose is because the show has got to happen somewhere, and Murfreesboro is hurting for decent venues. Everyone check the Nashville Scene, the Rage, and the Sidelines for all sorts of news on thursday.

In the space of a week or week-and-a-half Middle Tennessee's independent music scene will have been dealt two mighty blows. Red Rose has tragically changed hands and Slow Bar, well everyone knows what's going on there. This is nothing short of a travesty. Already bands avoid Nashville like the plague either because of the stigma of the vapid modern country music industry or bad experiences with disinterested, complacent, cross-armed crowds. Even a band like Yo La Tengo who come here to record and have good friends in Nashville have scheduled no dates here. These two venues were the only places that could pull in valid, national and international acts and both are now gone. Don't underestimate the impact of this. We can only hope that Grimey and Bingham will continue to use their powers for good and book shows at other venues and continue to try and make things happen here. Perhaps the two should go into business together and open a super-bad music venue, record store, restaurant, coffee shop, blah-blah-blah. It's a fucking shame that good things have a terrible habit of dying in this godforsaken town. There is great music here, and more happening all the time. We've just lost two huge hubs in the network of support, and this my friends is bullshit.

the rage article seems to side a little bit with the previous owners of the Rose. i don't really know if what the owners had to say is any more factual than what the other side had to say. for one thing, only 3 people were re-hired at the rose (so they wouldn't go broke and not be able to pay bills), and 3 is certainly not the majority of the staff as is talked about in the article.

it's not all that bad of an article though. i just wish it would have focused a bit more on exactly how sudden the shut down was and how quickly things changed with absolutely no warning at all.

#1) Personally, I thought it was fairly even. I think it was cool that they gave Aaron a chance to speak his mind on behalf of angry patrons.

#2) There may be some confusion as to how many were re-hired and how many remain on the staff to this day. Sources close to the Red Rose say that most were re-hired, but many felt they were being re-hired under poor or oppressive conditions, so they refused the offer.

#3) I agree that the suddeness was the worst part of it all. It caused way too many backlashes that in hindsight may have been too rash.

#4) Shame on anyone who would protest a show The Features have decided to play for any reason. To quote Stopforme: "The Features can do no wrong!" Seriously, don't miss it!

I think I'll go.  My love for the features has to be stronger than my disdain for the situation.

#1) Personally, I thought it was fairly even. I think it was cool that they gave Aaron a chance to speak his mind on behalf of angry patrons.
I would agree whole-heartedly. as much as i'd like to see an article taking a stance that i agreed with, the writer has to show both sides or it's not a good article.

It is a shame that Bingham and Co. lost out, but the hard fact is that there is still a great show there on the 4th, regardless of who lost what, who bought what, and the why of it all. I find it selfish, if not self-righteous, to protest the position of the other side, given that they are similar to all of us in one important way, they are trying to survive...The fact that their modus operandi is distasteful or "corporate" is irrelevant. Not agreeing with a position doesn't make it wrong, albeit extremely unpleasant.

Exactly when did music and a great rock show became a soapbox for a "cause"...what a load of crap...Keith Moon didn't give a shit about a "cause", and neither did John Bonham. They simply laid down the backbone for flat out ass kickin rock. I say let it ride Features, let it ride....and blow the F#$%*!g roof off the Dead Rose. I will be there, and I will enjoy it.

The Features will rock regardless...whether you (whoever you are reading this) come or not. smile.gif

Another side to this whole debacle is the silver lining: Bingham will work again. He will book bands somewhere else. What we tend to forget is that the Red Rose had major limitations. The Features had out-grown it, and the sound sucked. The patio is really cool, but it's limiting with no cover from the elements. I'll be fine biding my time until a new and approved option. I feel bad because I have seen some great shows there, and had great memories there, but it's a building. It's replacable.
