TOPIC: World Cup...

Who's watching it? The US played well against Portugal, and pulled out a much needed win. The Korea match wasn't as good, but it was full of brilliant play by goalkeeper Brad Freidel. Tell me somebody else is actually watching...
We'll miss you Mr. Hooper.

U.S.? Portugal? Korea? I thought the Red Wings and some other team were playing for the World Cup. Is the other team some group of cross-bred Portugese-Korean super-athletes?

I watch the US games, the England games. I haven't seen any others. Being that I never played soccer, I don't understand me watching at all, but it does get interesting. My friend who plays for MTSU was cursing at the TV last night when Korea scored their cheap ass header.

I played soccer for about a dozen years so I still like to watch it when I can, especially on the World Cup level. It's been hard to keep up with, with the odd times the games have come on.

I am now, too, watching the World Cup. Your love of it, damon, surpasses mine by far, considering you wake up at 5 am just to watch it. That's dedication. But, now, thanks to you, I am afraid that I have become hooked to soccer again.

Hmmm...No, I can't give in. I have made my claims, and you must abide by them for me to even consider the offer. If you can't come to agreement with me, I have to revert to my own plan. At least then there could be slumber parties.

Jenny and I could host one, but we live 5 hours away. Maybe the Features could play here, and then everyone could stay here with us. We could order pizza after the show, and stay up all night. Maybe we could do each other's hair too, or even paint each other's nails and gossip about the other kids in school.

JAD, I believe that this has been a topic a couple of months ago, but there are a few insomniacs on here. I am one, of course, since some of my posts are put up anywhere from 2am-4am. A couple were even at 5 am. My body's timing is way off when it comes to bedtime.
Anyway, damon, keep me updated on that game. I have to force myself to sleep tonight, since I have to get up at 5 am. Oh well.

Damon - I like your signature.  'Bonehead's Bank Holiday' is a really underrated song.  Like I've said, when we look back in ten years at the wonder that is/was Oasis' career, it will be plain to see that it was all downhill after Guigsy and Bonehead got kicked out.  Did you ever hear the taped argument between Liam and Noel?  I think it, like went in the pop charts in the UK...hilarious stuff.

By the way, did you get tickets to Oasis' Aug. 5 show in Atlanta?  When I try to get tickets, it says that tickets are not available at this time.  It doesn't say they've sold out, and I know they've gone on sale...I really want to go to that show.

thanks, i agree that is an underrated song. i haven't tried to get tickets this year, because they aren't playing any shows close to where i live. if i were at school right now, i'd definitely be at the atlanta show. i think it's sold out.

despite a shocking loss to poland today, the US managed to advance after Portugal blew their match against South Korea- losing 1-0 down two men for much of the second half. Poor officiating could easily be cited in both games, but all that really matters is that we advanced.

Alright, I have chosen to post in damon's absence this week. So, the U.S. won over Mexico with a score of 2-0. Let me note that this places them into the quarterfinals, and this is the best the US has done in soccer since 1930. Yay for McBride and Donovan!

Well hell. The US lost to Germany with a score of 0-1. But, this has been a GREAT showing by the Americans in the World Cup. Just thought I would let you all know..

she speaks the truth...

this had been a memorable cup, in that a number of underdogs managed to fight their ways out from the scrum of usual contenders. The US, South Korea, Senegal-- put out an amazing effort, and with a little luck, managed to get to the quarter finals.

Sadly, our own US squad was put down by a good German team. In our defense, the Germans benefitted from a few sketchy calls, including a handball on the goal line, which helped lift them to shady victory.

The biggest surprise of the tournament has been team from co-host South Korea, who was previously winless in World Cup play. This time around, they have managed to beat such quality sides as Italy, Portugal, Spain, the US- possibly the hardest road of any team in the semifinals. Many experts attribute their stunning success to their excellent fitness. It probably doesn't hurt that they are at home, and the calls seem to go their way.

in my opinion, this world cup has been bittersweet, as many of the traditional powers have been ousted. As nice as it has been seeing new faces in the mix, I had hopes for such teams as England and Sweden to go farther than they did...
We'll miss you Mr. Hooper.

it's comforting that there are other people out there that know what's going on. Ballack really would have made a big difference. I also wonder why Christian Ziege and Bierhoff didn't play- well, I guess Bierhoff did at the end.

Finally, Ronaldihno was easily the ugliest man in the entire tournament. Ronaldo and his stupid haircut are a close second.
