TOPIC: Aha Shake Heartbreak

So, who's heard it? What do you think?

Sounds like those boys need a vacation.

I think it sounds great. They recorded it all at once. Very few overdubs on the whole album.

A bit less (i hate this term) "southern rock" than the first one. A bit more pop-y in areas and, dare I say, "emo" in others. ohmy.gif

Discuss.

I think it shows a few more strings to their bow than the first album. Probably not as immediately accessible as 'Youth and...', but they can still write a killer tune. 'The Bucket' is an essential play at any indie disco. I really like some of the slower songs too, but the vocals on 'Day Old Blues' piss me right off.

Definitely a different approach from them I think, but not quite so raw and ready to be "honest" (I promise I'm not trying to sound cheesy), I do love Aha though, some of those tracks are crackers, especially King Of The Rodeo and Milk, nice and simple.

The vocals in the chorus of 'day old blues' are kind of yodelled, which you'd think might sould cool, but it really doesn't. I cant listen to that track at all.

After listening to both albums for like ever, I have concluded that both have a mixture of truly amazing and just-missing-truly-amazing songs. My favourite from Aha would have to be 'king of the rodeo' and from Youth it would have to be 'Red Morning Light' or Happy Alone' or Mollys Chambers... oh i cant decide!
However, when i saw KOL they introduced 4 Kicks as 'This is a fight song. Don't any of you guys start a fight out there', which was obviously meant to start fights - is it just me or was that unecessary for all us delicate females in the standing area? dry.gif

Going to get the KOL DVD soon though - didnt even know they had on out until i was browsing amazon!

i really hate to admit it, but i like it. a lot, in fact. i didn't care for the first one at all, but maybe i never gave it a chance. i really like the basslines that they were told to play on ASH...very cool smile.gif even the yodelly vocals on Day Old Blues don't bother me. next time i see that lot, i won't shoot them a dirty look.

I'm a huge huge huge huge kol fan (note the name)...in fact, that's how I came to know the features. but I'll even admit that I don't like day old blues. maybe it'll grow on me.

what i've heard has been decent, and i wasn't a big fan of the first record.

the interview they just did in spin had a real weird vibe to it... like they don't even seem to be liking their own music and where they are. i don't know... just something strange about it.

I just read the SPIN article, and thought it was pretty funny. But I agree that kol don't seem to get their own music...I think it's that they're so casual about it, as if this whole rock star thing is just something they decided to try, and it worked out and "that's cool." I have to wonder if the apathy is not just a part of their image. Either way, I love what they do.

I think this album is "arguebly" better than the last....although the last has more commercially friendly records. The second album has been alot easier to get into - took me like a day for the songs to become implanted in my head whereas other stuff usually takes longer...never a bad sign for an album!

I've been hearing "bucket" quite a bit on Live 105 in San Francisco. Looks like it has made their everyday rotation. I bought the album a few weeks ago. I have mixed feelings about it, I'm still warming up to it really. I'm wondering if this is just another band that has a few trendy songs, and will disappear once a trendier band appears. But who knows? I'm waiting patiently to hear the features on radio stations around san francisco. Then I'll be happy for awhile.

I love both albums, the whole point of Day Old Blues is the yodelling. Caleb gave up a 2 pack a day smoking habit to acheive this range of vocals for the album so don't you dare suggest that it's a crap song! EVERY one of their songs rocks. If you like both albums, download Head to Toe (available on iTunes, UK anyway) and Molly's Hangover. I'm from the UK, Kings of Leon sure are mighty big over here.
Also when I saw KOL live, they said the same thing...''this song will make you wanna fight, but we hate fighting.'' Sigh, legends that they are, seeing them again in June. I heard about the Features from my obsessive following of KOL, apparently the features supported them, and so of course I immediately opened up my iTunes and downloaded all the tracks I could, then came on here, and downloaded some more. Lovin' it quite honestly.
BTW Goldenfallingheart, the actual lyrics are ''Golden Fallen Heart'', don't be such a Kings of Leon n00b, the lyrics are available from the internet and from the insert sleeve of the LP.

Thurdsday was released on vinyl some years back (late 90s?), but we're all hoping it finds its way to a proper album one day. On the other hand, I doubt they could capture that same magic that happens at a live show.

Are you seeing The Features this month when they come to the UK?

yeah Kings of Leon are huge. Yeah the darkness could have been big, but I cant help but feel that they overplayed their gimickyness in such a way that made them a bit too commercial too quickly. Kings of Leon on the other hand have everything to truly last the ages. You are right though, Kings of Leon and the Features are the new age. I strongly recommend you guys all check out another couple of bands....

The Mooney Suzuki (supported KOL)
and....
an unsigned band from Worthing, UK....
Early Morning Soundtrack(supported Baby Shambles and Eighties Matchbox, truly a great upcoming British band) ....spread their name now, and when they hit the shelves you'll be the most under ground mofo within your circle of friends! I'm serious their songs are so good, and they were absolutley outstanding live, hopefully they're adding their best tracks later this month so keep checking back, AND SIGN UP FOR THEIR FORUMS

cool dude, does ''over here'' mean in the US, or just on these forums, coz in Britain they're almost under ground, but just starting to break through. I think they're one of those bands that looks under ground but is actually really popular with big music fans. So are they big in the US?

By "over here", I meant the US, but I guess they are somewhat "underground" here. I just thought they were on their way up a year or two ago and then... nothing.

Yeah KOL are huge in the UK. I mean absolutely huge. On my ticket for that gig, it clearly said Kings of Leon (No Support). I have a feeling it was one of those things where the support band i.e. The Mooney Suzuki were brought in last minute, but they were damn good. If you wanna know how big KOL are in the UK this should give you an idea...Youth and Young Manhood was a top 3 album, and A-Ha Shake Heartbreak was a number one album. Feel free to ask any other KOL UK questions!

KOL are doing an arena tour in the summer which really pisses me off! I've seen them 3 times, but no way hose am I going to watch them in an arena... Argh, just realised how elitist I sound... Whoops, I'm clearly not though.

The Mooney Suzuki are really quite good! One of my friends bigs them up all the time so I'm quite into them now... Not had the pleasure of seeing them with KOL before though, now that would be a good gig!

Looking forward immensely to Leeds to see KOL again.. It would be awesome if tthe features were there...

Plus, there is this awesome band called THE KOOKS! They supported the subways in march and they're pretty hot stuff! xxx

The Kooks are pretty cool. I work at Sheffield Uni's union when im not studying, and I saw them supporting the Thrills in November and The Subways just a few weeks ago. They seem to have an ear for a catchy tune. Definately a band to watch for the future.

I believe they were talking about generally unheard of, especially when compared to Def Leopard, Bon Jovi, Poison and The Everly Brothers.

Those Everly Brothers can rock the balls off of Bon Jovi!

I've heard of the Dandy Warhols, I just don't remember where.

Back to topic: I don't care for KoL's music. However, I'm glad they are doing well on the music scene and that they are helping The Features.

The Dandy Warhols are pretty big in the UK. 'Bohemian Like You' seemed to be used on every other advert on tv a few years back. Im sure 'Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia' was a number one album over here too.

Their tune 'Get Off' is one of my favourite songs ever.

went 2 features concert last night in little civic wolverhampton :

quality!!
as usualy they laughed in the face of all other upcoming bands

they showed us as a guest 'exist' these guys are deffinately worth a go! they sounded like oasis abit wen they started, i think they were abit worried we would be harsh like we were to the band before!
when they realised the look on our faces wasnt disgust, it was infact amazement as evry1 knew theyd spend on their album after the performance they gave us. overall a 10/10 gig, u know its good wen u wake up with a buzzing in both ears and blurred eyes.... though that couldve been the alcohol...
