TOPIC: Dave Grohl looks like Billy Joel
Posted  Friday, April 30, 2004 at 11:09 PM
Post 1 of 41
So we got 3-day passes when all we needed was Sunday tickets. So we went today to get our extra $20 worth. I've never been in all my years in Nashville, so I thought I'd try it out.

At first it felt nice to be back out around the kids again after what seems like forever of being cooped up every night, falling asleep at un-Godly early hours on the weekend. It passed quickly, and there we were, in frat boy/high school hell.

We caught the middle to end of Fuel. I could never remember any specific song of theirs, but I remember that I flat out hated everything I'd ever heard of theirs. I can still say that.

As it was so crowded, I really couldn't see the stage. They have those nifty TVs, however, so I could stand and sweat and watch really loud TV.

The Foo Fighters were OK. Dave Grohl had put on weight, and the beard makes him look like Billy Joel of recent years. They put on a decent show. We cut out early after getting our fill.

We'll go back Sunday for the Strokes. Who else is going? (which I think was discussed in another thread...)

I rearranged my work schedule to get Sunday off. I am so excited to see the Strokes and not have to leave the state to do so. Great great great.

Yes, we might go catch Josh Rouse before dinner and Green Rode Shotgun. If it rains, we definitely won't, though.

And speaking of high school, it was rather disconcerting to hear "Ms. Peach, Ms. Peach," and to look up to see, like, 6 of my students huddled together screaming and waving at me. I can't escape, even on Friday night.

yeah, i plan on going. i'm really more nervous about driving in the crazy traffic/finding parking than excited to see the show, though. (any parking tips?) this will be my first in-state strokes show. it will also be my first show not to be in the front row. i hope to be more excited by tomorrow.

Yeah, ditto. This will be my first Strokes show, period, but strangely enough I am not that excited due to the crappy audience I anticipate dealing with.

I hope it will be worthwhile.

I was gonna go, but I think I have talked myself out of going. The last time I went to the Riverstages I had a horrible time due to the crowd. I just don't think it's worth it. Plus, if it's raining tomorrow it would just make me miserable. I hope everyone that's going has a great time though!

Stereophonics--no.

Fountains of Wayne--I couldn't hear the vocals, and that took away a lot for me. I had high expectations, and they met many of them. I guess I was just looking for a 4th band whose name starts with 'F' that I serendipitously stumbled upon by going to one of their live shows.

Before the Strokes--annoying high school party
During the Strokes--disgusting frat party

It was one of those shows where they could just blast the CD really loud, and I wouldn't know the difference. Apparently the singer was pretty funny and all, but I couldn't hear any of his antics onstage because of all the noise around me. Oh well.

Though Token disagrees with me, I want to try something new for any future concert at Riverfront Park: I want to pay the cover at Graham Central Station and watch the show from their roof. Once there, I can use a semi-clean restroom (instead of a porta-potty), drink the modestly-over-priced drink of my choice, sit down, and watch the show with a perfect, albeit far-away view.

Stereophonics was pretty much a loud oasis minus any songwriting ability. even the lead singer was a Liam Lite.

Fountains Of Wayne...i dont know...im a huge fan of theirs and the set list was pretty dissapointing. It definately wasnt catered to a festivle crowd. speaking of which. the crowd was absoultely horrible. All they did was complain about wanting to see the strokes (for no reason) and want to hear stacy's mom. ugh. people just...

Ditched the strokes because the crowd was getting to me and walked over with some friends for George Clinton and P-Funk. MAN. Garbage! it was fun for about 30 minutes but the old man mustve gone on for about 2 and a half hours. They had to turn off the PA and all the lights before all those potheads realized their set was long past over.

The day before Josh Rouse was thourghly entertaining and worth standing in the rain for. Im really looking forward to the live DVD that is coming out June 29th. and Styx was...well Styx. Whats up with only singing the opening line to Mr. Roboto as part of a medly?

Festivles suck. whether you are seeing radiohead and the cure or steppen wolf and styx...

The Strokes were amazingly good, as always. I cannot explain how happy they make me. They played "Clampdown"! It's the second time I've heard them play it, and I still say it's the best cover I've ever heard.

I have no problem with Riverstages. Yeah, the crowd there was filled with so-called fans who didn't even know the song titles, but The Strokes were well worth suffering through some annoying teenage/frat antics and the other five bands we had to sit through before them. Riverstages got The Strokes to come back to Nashville, so I'm happy with them.

Julian expressed his love for Nashville, so maybe they will actually come back...wishful thinking.

5 bands we sat through:
Kim's Fable : junk
Endochine: junk that wants to be Coldplay
Chris Robinson: good , just not my thing really
Stereophonics: same as above
Fountains of Wayne: good for what they do, definitely not my thing

how much longer did the strokes play after "what ever happened?"? we left after that song (close to 10:00-ish) as we couldn't handle anymore of julian's between-song banter (since it was averaging 5 minutes between every song.)

they played for another 30 minutes.

i echo sadie's sentiments about the show. it was awesome and i hope that the crowd's very enthusiastic reaction to them will influence a possible tour stop in Nashville the next time around.

id say about 50% of oasis's songs are alright. that compared to the 5% of what i have heard of stereophonics...
in fact the best stereophnics song i have heard is a cover of "Mama told me not to come" in which Tom Jones sings along with them.

I'd have to say the Strokes show was a resounding disappointment. Casablancas is a total asshole. I'm not surprised at all that El Strokos have begun to attract the frat crowd given that Julio's wanker macho posturing (filming his crotch with the camera, making Fab-o-lous Moretti kiss his crotch, leaving the stage to empty his crotch, etc.) isn't so far removed from behavior that is commonplace in those circles. Call me old-fashioned, but I don't like it when uber-famous musicians use their status as an excuse to act like children. If I want to see that I can go to Lone Official practice. It makes me ashamed. Jerk-offs like him give all musicians a bad rap. It's too bad, because when the band was playing they were actually pretty good. I'm just glad I didn't have to pay.

i enjoyed it immensely. it was probably my least favorite strokes show i've been to, but i still loved it. the setlist was good and i actually enjoyed the banter (though i can see how it could've been annoying to some). front row was, once again, worth all the pain that comes with people constantly being passed over your head (call me crazy, but crowd-surfing on an incline just seems like a really bad idea to me). plus i got to hit a lot of those bastards. i got an awesome souvenir of a piece of some dude's shirt. yeah, i'm a badass.

Amazing show, of course. Nothing makes me happier than to be front row at a Strokes concert. There were tears, elation, and all around giddiness from our crew. Crowd surfing down concrete stairs has to be the dumbest thing ever. I have never seen a person start rolling down a hill of people feet first, and I would rather never see such again. Julian's antics were definitely at their height. The first time I saw them back in November, there really weren't any antics to be had. I think they just fed off of the crazy frat-vibe and went with it. "Anyone have a lighter?" Amazing. The Strokes are the best band making music right now, period.

I was also happy to see Stereophonics, but I can now safely say that I do not need to buy their fourth album and any after that. Their first two albums were full of nice guitar driven rock songs that I found quite enjoyable, but their new stuff is all way too droney and too fond of the wah-wah pedal. Not cool. I really did enjoy Fountains of Wayne. They were perfectly acceptable and entertaining in my book. Not at all as offensive as Endochine (or whatever they are called) and Kim's Fable. Blah.

And don't diss Oasis. I can understand criticism for Be Here Now and subsequent albums (especially Heathen Chemistry) but Definitely Maybe and Morning Glory are textbook examples of classic and timeless pop songs...in my completely biased opinion.

So it was that crazy all over the place? When leaving, I was wondering how painful it was to stand on the steep hill parts of the grassy section. Riverfront Park is just a weird place, moreso now that they've redone the entire main stage area. I don't remember any crowd sufing during the Bob Dylan set a couple years ago when the main stage was far back from the crowd.

I recently listened to this for the first time in probably five years, maybe more. The lyrics are absolute pieces of crap. I don't understand. Why did I like this band? Why did millions of people love this band?? In retrospect, I just do not get it at all.

Was it when Julian grabbed the camera during "What Ever Happened"? If so, I knew that I was going to look like a total spaz because that is one of the songs that inspires my hysteria. I also noticed that a camera man was filming me singing along to a Stereophonics song. Of course, it was one that I only knew the chorus to, so the rest of the time I just kinda mumbled along. Awkward. The camera guys sucked. I noticed that during Fountains of Wayne's set, one cameraman stayed on the keyboardist the whole time filming his keys and his hands and his cool sunglasses. Who cares about the keyboardist? I don't even think he's an official member of the band.

As for Oasis, different strokes for different folks. Personally, I love them and know that I would not even be on this message board if it wasn't for them. That band is responsible for me caring about music at all, and they will always be that for me. As I said, I'm extremely biased. And I never put much thought into Oasis' lyrics, and I've read many times that Noel doesn't either. What I always found amazing about them were the arrangements, music, melody, and vocals. Yeah, they did 'sample' other songs every now and then, but how many artists are truly 100% original? Every band is inspired by some other band. So yeah, I can see why millions of people loved them. And I can see why a couple hundred thousand still do.

This was my first Strokes show, and I thoroughly enjoyed it despite all of the violence (I seriously was afraid I was going to get shoved down those stone steps myself) and the stupidity of much of the crowd.

I wouldn't say that the Strokes are my favorite band, but I've listened to their two albums quite a bit over the last year and seeing them live was just, well, exciting. I hope next time (if there is one) that they come to Nashville, I can catch them at a better venue (although, without 328, I'm not really sure where that'd be).

I really enjoyed the strokes and especially the Foo Fighters but the crowd make up seemed to be a mix of special olympics hopefuls/ screaming teenage girls that apparently got lost on the way to a Lindsay Lohan appearance/ drunk rednecks who just happened to be in town and decided to come and bother me/ unclassifiable idiots (other)

It was pretty much intolerable and may have ruined me for festivals forever
