TOPIC: De Novo Dahl @ The Boro
Posted  Monday, January 26, 2004 at 8:49 PM
Post 1 of 101
For the Murfreesboro people, De Novo Dahl is playing Thursday night at the Boro. I'm not sure who's opening. They will be unveiling yet another new song, with the third such new release being at THE SUTLER ON FRIDAY THE 13TH OF FEBRUARY WITH THE MATTOID AND THE PRIVATES. Fair notice to the hot ladies who read the messageboard and don't post, Keith and I will be at the Boro on Thursday night. See you there.

Youthinks right. I just want to make sure that it sells out, which I really think would happen with little to no advertising. I want it to be so big that people have to peer through the musty windows of the old bar and watch it from outside.

Until then, all hands on deck for the DND show at the Boro.

And thanks again RD....

The cover is $5 for 21+, $7 for 18-20. The Boro decides that one and we can't do anything about the $7 because they take the extra $2 as compensation for having non-drinkers in the house.

It should be interesting to see what kind of turnout we get at The Boro, the band hasn't played there in a while, and the last time was during a huge storm where the power went out a few times.

*For those of you who live within range of WMTS (88.3), DND will be on DJ Betty's show at 6pm tomorrow.

That storm sucked. As a result, it was nowhere near as packed as it might have been otherwise. Joel looked ultra-sketchy that night.

Which is now within a 30 mile radius of Murfreesboro, reaching to south Cashville, thanks to a grant from the university. Finally, something useful from the MTSU newspaper.

I did say woodwind section - if don't know what that means, look it up.

I did notice at my high school reunion, that all the people who were in band turned out to be pretty darn successful. All the people who made fun of the kids who were in band ended up working at their Dad's landscaping business or had a bunch of kids right out of high school. Just an observation.

I'm really excited about this show - I haven't seen DND in over two monthes! The two extra dollars it costs sucks (I'd drink if they'd let me! tongue.gif ), but it will be well worth it and cheaper than the $11 it cost to get into 12th & Porter.

I can't remember if I've seen laws Rushing before or not, I think I have...And I know I've seen Velcro Stars (whent ehy opened for the Privates?).

I also learned last Thursday that chewing gum keeps me from falling asleep on the drive back from Murfreesboro after all of these awesome shows.

I think the VH1 Save the Music campaign may have been reporting that.

One must keep in mind that this is not a causal relationship. Being in band doesn't necessarily make one smarter, but it could be that smarter people typically have an interest in band. Or people who's folks can afford the extra costs of band/private lessons are more likely to pay their kids' way through college, leaving them more time to focus on school and not a part-time job. Or parents that force their kids to do extra curricular activities like band continue to pressure them to finish school and be sucessful.

Or it could be more positive...it could just indicate a good support network at home to help push kids through. There's also the improved understanding of syntax through learning to read music which can carry over into learning both writing and math. There's also the drive created from the performance aspect. There's also the fact that it can be a creative outlet.

Yes, they "dance" around the while the marching band marches.

For an entertaining look at this, see the episode of Family Guy where Meg becomes a flag girl. Genius.

Well, I know what they do normally. I just wondered if it was different when there are three flag girls versus a whole team.

There was a baton twirler with a flaming baton earlier this year. I don't know if she was from our school or not. Anyway, she caught some of the field on fire. It was very satisfying.

We didn't have a marching band at my school, because we were too small. If we would have had one, I would've loved to have played some type of drum. We did have a "pep band," though, and thelawnwrangler played bass in it. Keith, didn't you and your fellow Lifeboys play in the USN pep band?

Telling would ruin the surprise, but it has only been played twice in the last six months or so, both of which being at the Blue Sky Court. They're playing some others that haven't gotten much attention lately, but have been played a number of times in the last six months.

"New Belief" - I like that song.

Well, I can't really think what it would be, RD.
-"Monday Morning" has only been played a couple of times, right? But it hasn't been around for six months.
-"Rub You Wrong" has kind of disappeared, but I'm pretty sure it's been played more than twice in the last six months. Same goes for "Push Buttons" and "Top of the World."
-"Til the End of Time" or whatever that ballad is called, perhaps?
-"The Stars of Track and Field" was only played once, right?
-That mostly instrumental one - what's it called?

Well, this just backs up the theory that drummers aren't musicians, because a) I only lasted at Belmont for what added up to about half a semester,
and 2) I'm not very good at math, but had near perfect scores on the English parts. I guess I'm more of a conjugator than a divider.

Yep, I played piano before I went to public school (T.W. Hunter Middle School) in 7th grade. Thats when I decided to get into band, and had been wanting to learn how to play the drums. That year my parents bought me a practice pad and drum sticks for my birthday in Sept. I was actually the only one who could read music and excelled until my friend came and finally gave me some competition. I didn't get my first drumset until Christmas of 8th grade.

In middle school, I guess before she knew it wasn't cool to be in band, probably the hottest girl in Sumner County played the clarinet. We were both new to the school, and we became good friends through 7th and 8th grade. She was beautiful and we would stay up late talking and on band trips always sit together. She started to become popular, thus pulling me up the social ladder with her. All this changed when we got to high school, of course, and she got a sophomore jerk boyfriend. I almost got beat up because I was the only one who ever really stood up to him. Hey, he made fun of my exchange student! What was I supposed to do but mock him in front of all his friends?!

And yes, I feel I have a right to go off on any tangent I want in MY thread.

-They don't have a name for the instrumental that now has words except for "The Funk Song". If you listen closely, the bassline resembles part of the music in the original Nintendo Super Mario Brothers.

Did anyone happen to catch the radio show last night? I listened to some of it during my copyright law class, but i found it hard to listen to my professor and the show at the same time so i missed some parts.

I caught enough of it for Serai to proclaim her undying love for me. And to hear Big Star, The Mattoid (excellent call DND), and Raffi.

Lyrically, it sure is. The extended version (probably one of the hundreds) that they played at the Sutler in November was even better.

"And I wish that they have a street corner in Heaven
where I can buy lots of ketamine and smack
And I wish that they have a crack hoe in that Heaven
who can sell me pussy and crack
And I wish that they have a honky tonk in Heaven
were I can buy lots of peanuts and booze
And I wish that they have a rockandroll band in that Heaven
that can play the Blue Suede Shoes"

I like to listen to Funeral Party more than any other though.

Wow, now that I feel acquainted with your life story, I'll just say that band is an indicator, but by no means a concrete one.

The name of the song evolved into piggy's adventure. Joel added the miss himself dry.gif that night. Besides it wouldn't have anything to do with the Muppet Piggy because she would be a Mrs. now. Unless it was only a publicity stunt or a ploy to get a chunk of Kermit's green.

Tonight was great! If I only got to hang out with these same people at every DND show, life would be even more superb. The show was pretty packed for the first 3/4. I liked the new song, but I don't think that it will ever be one of my absolute favorites, like Piggy's Adventure has already become. The most excellent return of Rub You Wrong and Push Buttons were highlights for me. Back in the day, those two and Be Your Man led me to finally like De Novo Dahl, after trying to convince myself that I should for so long. Unfortunately, I was telling Mitch about Joey's drumming changes when Rob You Wrong was announced. Fortunately, I recorded. I will go on record as saying that Joey's new drumming in The Cowboy and The Frenchman has made me like that song 10 times more. Good show!

Sorry Keith, I don't like Monsterproof (I am now pleased to realize that not everyone other than me likes it). I was a little disappointed that it was replaced with Memphis. I wish that they would have played the Damage Is Done. That song rules.

I really like how different the new songs sound. I think variety is definitely one of the band's strong points. Of course, it also leads to some polarized opinions about songs (i.e. Monsterproof, Sunday Morning). I'm especially in awe of Carney's new bass lines. Very, very phat.

Despite the subpar set last night (sorry, I'm just being honest), the energy in the crowd was still excellent. It was great hanging out with all y'all.

Great fun indeed!! Fabulous show. I love the Dahls and i like monsterproof, which shocked me when people shouted "no" when they said they were going to play it. oh well, all their songs are excellent. Only downfall... the camera guy/equipment falling on me. I didn't realize it happened till he started apologizing profusely to me, then i felt pain in my shoulder. I guess that's the price to pay for great music! I missed hearing Piggy's adventure..... maybe they'll play it at the Sutler show. thanks for a great show last night guys! biggrin.gif

After a few listens from the recording, I have decided that I don't really like the new song (Woke Up Late). It has it's moments, but overall, I don't think that I like it. It sounds like No Doubt, which doesn't necessarily weigh in on my opinion, just an observation. I want more Mark songs, dammit. Has he just not written a song in forever or what? And, I'm referring to lyrics.
