TOPIC: Desert Island Discs
Posted  Saturday, January 7, 2006 at 6:17 AM
Post 1 of 40
Best of the year lists are always popular and actually act as candid reviews for other people. I love to get an idea of what someone liked or didn't that I may or may not have heard yet. But what about the classics? You guys/gals may have done this and I have just missed it. If so, ignore me, I won't mind.

You are dropped on an island and have the ability to pick some albums/cds to take with you. You are all alone and no one will know what you have chosen, to listen to for all eternity on an uncharted desert isle...take as many or few as you can, it's your eternity.

My sad, tired old list,
In no particular order:
1. The New York Dolls, self titled 1st LP
2. The Features, Spongebath EP, nothing against Exhibit A, I LOVE IT, but have been back here a lot lately.
3. The Stooges, it's always 1969, o.k., all across the usa
4. Iggy Pop, 'The Idiot'
5. David Bowie, everything I could get but certainly, 'Heroes', 'Diamond Dogs', 'Scary Monsters'. God I love Bowie.
6. The Smiths, 1st album.
7. Morrissey, 'Viva Hate', if you don't know it please give it a listen.
8. Chumbawamba, 'Swinging With Raymond' and many more.
9. Gang of Four, 'Return The Gift', a great collection.
10. The White Stripes, 'White Blood Cells'
11. The Best of Leonard Cohen, any Leonard Cohen
12 + I just now realized I can't do this. Like Lou Reed says on Lou Reed Live, Take No prisoners, 1978, (another album I will need to take) "It's not that I don't want to play your favorites, it's just there are so many favorites to chose from. In Lou's case that is so true. Why did I not include The Velvet Underground featuring Nico produced by the amazing Andy Warhol???? Too many favorites..........

I loved The Kaiser Chiefs 'Employment' this year and wrote to Chumbawamba about them since they are also from Leeds, England. Boff was quite nice about them and gave me some background info on the nane involving football clubs, etc, oh I forgot, I don't care about sports. The Kaiser Chiefs are great and does no one like Louis XIV, from California?

What a long thread starter, maybe it explains why I never started a thread before.

Yes, I'll have the dada 2 go please with a side of anarchism.

mm mm bad

For me, "desert island discs" is a different list than "favorite albums." My favorite albums tend to be a bit homogenous, just because my personal favorite genre of music is pop/rock. I would want more variety if I were going to be stuck on an island.

I would definitely take my three favorite albums:
The Great Escape - Blur
Breakfast With Girls - Self
the White Album - the Beatles

But rather than taking a bunch more white guys with guitars, I would want some variety. First off, some rap. Give me some Public Enemy and some OutKast, and probably some 2Pac, too. I would also want a lot of classical music, especially Chopin and my man Ludwig van. I think I would want some bluegrass, too - like some old Flatt & Scruggs and Bill Monroe. Also, I would need Jeff Buckley and lots of Radiohead and maybe something really heavy like the first Korn album. Finally, I would want lots and lots of gospel albums.
Relevant: Prince, PT Anderson, Punk, Post-Punk, Purple, Party of Five, Peter Swanson, Peter Gabriel-led Genesis, "Peter Panic", Paul's Boutique, Potential Energy, Every Features MB member but me.

Thanks to krisan for the reply about Kaiser Chiefs, I do not know why so few people seem to know them. I think they are really refreshing. They were on Jay Leno's show here in the U.S. some months back and really rocked the house. After they sang 'I Predict A Riot', Jay walked over to the band to shake hands with them and Ricky Wilson gave him a couple of dollars as if tipping a nightclub emcee. It was hilarious. How does Ricky Wislon jump so high???

Thanks to jamiecarroll for a reply too. I see the point you make, there clearly could be a difference in desert island discs and favorites. I would certainly miss the white album, I did not take it. I guess this is a pointless thread since only a couple of people have replied. It was inspired by a conversation with a friend about narrowing down album/cd collections and seemed like a good idea at the time.

Looking forward to the Tucker Theater show on Jan. 20.

i agree

this thread is pointless. especially since you included the part where you could take as many albums you wanted. in that case, why wouldn't you take every record ever made?

The Strokes "Room On Fire"
Oasis "The Masterplan"
The Features (mix CD of live, demos, album tracks)

I could get along fine with those. Or I'd just take my iPod.

Sorry if the thread is pointless. I was just kind of wondering what people on the board liked besides The Features, apart from last years releases. I did not want to set a limit, people should set their own limits, my own list totally got out of hand. I would not take everything ever recorded, since I don't like everything ever recorded.

I am glad I did not sign up to participate in the cd exchange, at least one poor soul can be spared my tastes!

DigsySlattery, I love The Strokes, "Room on Fire" is amazing!

Rock on!!!

Yeah, Room on Fire is pretty much my perfect album. I love it a tad bit too much. The expectations for "First Impressions..." were a little high and the album mostly lives up to them, but it's no "Room."

Oh, yeah, The Strokes are in my ultimate triumverate alongside The Features and Oasis. They're simply amazing and I have listened to every song, literally, hundreds of times. I just think that "First Impressions" suffers from an editing problem, as in there is none. It has everything, including three tracks that could have been left as B-Sides and "On The Other Side" could benefit from losing a verse (the second one). But still a great album.

I hope all The Strokes fans on the board know they will be on 'Saturday Night Live' on NBC Saturday Jan. 21. I know some of you are not in the U.S., but maybe you know someone who could get you a copy of their performances. The guest band usually does 2 songs and sometimes the sound is awful. This show is kind of lame now, but I always check the musical guests because I will never forget seeing Talking Heads perform 'Psyco Killer' and 'Artist's Only' back in the 70's.

I'm a huge SNL fan, so I really freaked out when they announced they were going to be on last Saturday. I think SNL has been better than average this season, especially the last episode. The Super Sweet 16 parody and the MTV4 Techno Show were quite hilarious. And the Chandelier commercial.

I'm betting the Strokes do "Juicebox" and "Heart in a Cage."

Awesome SNL performances? THe B-52's. That was amazing.

I don't think I am one of those people. It wouldn't make any sense for me to deny it or whatever, I am fat. I am also fine being fat. Thanks for asking, it is funny that you did!

Headed to Murfressboro to see THE FEATURES tonight!!!

The Tucker Theater show was great!!! I must add The Features next album to my endless list of desert island discs. Good thing I didn't set a limit!!!

'The Gates of Hell' was fantastic, I wish I had been a little back so I could see the whole stage better during that song. I felt a really strong energy within the band on that song!

On a side note I thought The Strokes were GREAT on SNL. I loved Drew Barrymore's cameo on the news, I can't imagine how she happened to be there?.....me asking knowingly.........?????????

The Strokes were the very best musical act I have seen on SNL in a while.

That episode of SNL makes me a little ashamed of being so proud of that show. Technically, it was a train wreck. Sarsgaard couldn't read the teleprompter throughout, there were grips and stagehands all over the place, a boom mike made a cameo, those darn cats and that faulty TV...man, not a good night.

The Strokes were good but Julian needs to reacquaint himself with his voice. He hasn't sounded that uneven, well, ever. "Juicebox" is not in his range, it seems, and it sounded like he was overcompensating on "You Only Live Once" with weird vocal tics that, well, were kinda embarrassing. And I'm not a fan of Nick's new jangly bohemian look. BUT I still love them and they were really good, just not as good as they can be.

I'll add that the Camera 3 operator was missing cues all night... the big one being the zooming into the clock during the hotel skit. I'm assuming he was a fill in.

The pirate sketch made me laugh. Stupid but made me laugh. Even though pirates arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr sooooo last year.

Maybe it's just me, I wasn't going to respond to the whole show since mainly I was looking forward to The Strokes, but I will respond in a long run on sentance.

I don't mind train wrecks as long as no one one gets hurt. Maybe some of you are industry people that might get scars on the resume from things like techno flaws, but I like it. I am so sick over-produced everything and I still watch old 'live' tapes, because the actors are forced to act, albiet, improv, I like it when people have to work for their money.

Every live show has flaws, this had A LOT, some of it was funny.

The previous week's 'Chandelier Commercial' made me wonder why I do not have a CHANDELIER!, in every room. A classic is born.

I am warning you you must prepare for Arctic Monkeys!!!

and really, don't make assumptions about what music you think i listen to. you might catch a glance of what i listen to in a couple of years when someone from wmts discovers this brand new totally awesome band no one's ever heard of. but yeah, you don't know. kinda like how you don't know that confessions on a dance floor came out 2 months ago and it has nothing to do with the "cutting edge of 80's music." sometimes i miss using my music snob sword.

anyway, i forgive you for the bad bands you like since you're older. just like i forgive my 8 year old for really liking the killers because she's 8.

The first part of your latest post seems kind of odd and paranoid....

I know when that Madonna album came out, I have heard it, I just don't think she has been really fresh in a long time, sorry.

It is nice you have a daughter, it could be worse, she could listen to Ashley Simpson and do ho-downs on national TV.....

In all seriousness....Good luck raising a child in these trying times!

I grow weary of this thread, when shall we return to Transylvania, huh????

My favorite albums (at this moment)- some Ive loved for years (Gomez, SFA), others are recent purchases that are getting heavy play on the stereo...

Gomez- Bring It On
Super Furry Anlmals- Radiator
Dismemberment Plan- Change
Manic Street Preachers- Everything Must Go
Mansun- Six
...and you will know us by the trail of dead- Source, Tags and Codes
Constantines- Shine A Light
Hot Hot Heat- Makeup the Breakdown
The Mars Volta- Deloused In The Comatorium
Screaming Trees- Dust

I reckon this list has most moods covered, but Im pretty sure Id get fed up with just these 10 cds. Ive played them all to death already. I seem to need a new music fix every few weeks, I dont seem to ever be content with my record collection- so I think Id struggle in this situation.
