any place where dancing to Slick Rick, George Clinton (AND the Parliment Funkadelic, mind you) and any other decent hip-hop is overruled by dancing to fucking Primal Scream just doesnt sit well with me.

have a kick ass time though! someone force the DJ to play "whats so funny 'bout peace, love and understanding" for me.

2003 could use a bit of sass and snobbery.

i know i stand outside of the fence here...i just really cant stand that band and a whole lot of their fans are straight up eliest jerks. of course there are exceptions to every rule...but it wasnt for broad generalizations then i dont think there would be very much room for debate and growing.

Well, I'd like for everyone to at least give it a chance. I know Holeypeacoat and I are determined to do our best to NOT make this a stuck up scenester thing (though . what exactly is that anyway? isn't it all relative?) It's about the music, and loads of it... the bands listed are a brief list of what will be played (if i listed everything ...what would be the fun in that? wink.gif)

of course we'll give it a chance, i dont think too many of us are just straight up assholes and i really hope you can pull it off. but isnt more about the dancing and community part moreso than the music?
if i was going to listen to pre-recorded music, id do it where i didnt have to pay a cover to. this is where the fear of the scene slips in. certain people might think of this gathering to be an oppurtunity to be seen (scene) being cool.
best of luck! smile.gif

adoration is a very strong word. the bands i do adore are very few and important to me. the postal service is fun but definately not a band i adore.

i dont really understand what you are asking in the second question. yes, the postal service and death cab are very different. seperate fans of each band are different and shared fans of both bands are often those people i dont care too much for. but of course there are exceptions. like little miss carey, aw. still got beef?

in my experience most death cab fans are postal service fans.
not always, but most.
i guess we're agreeing on 'exceptions' then.
i thought you liked death cab.

i wasn't necessarily disagreeing, just further questioning.

Your blanket distaste for the fans of Death Cab strikes me as more elitist than any Death Cab fan I've ever known.

But let's face it... underground music is based on two ideologies: one is community, and the other is exclusion. Some people like to horde their music to themselves, and can't stand finding out that other people like their music. Others find music they love and share it with as many people as they can find. Any band will surely have followers of both ideologies, Death Cab included. I think the statement you make about Death Cab fans pertains more to your associates being elitist than to Death Cab fans as a whole. The same individuals that you base your Death Cab stereotype on likely enjoy other indie acts... do you make the same generalizations about those bands' fanbases as well?

The curious case to me is the person that shares music with you, but then gets angry with you when you begin to listen to it on your own. The girl that introduced me to Built to Spill, for example, with the insistance that they were "exactly my kinda band" was apalled when she found that I'd picked up three of their albums, claiming that I'd "stolen what wasn't rightfully mine." What's up with that?

In any case, elitism exists, but I wouldn't draw the lines around the bands, but rather around the fans that are themselves elitist.

all i can really do is go with what i am around, will. and basically what i see is that almost all of my music snob friends are huge death cab fans....
do i think every death cab fan is a snob? no.
do i think most are? yeah.
am i wrong? could be.
does it stop me from making friends with fans of death cab? no.
do i give a shit about any of this? no.

The guy who handed me the flier seemed reasonably nice. If I can dance to PULP than I'll be happy.

hey! that was me (David) that gave you the flier:) I'm glad you're coming!

I think the main thing about this night of music is that it gives those willing to attend a chance to listen to great music and even be exposed to new music we haven't heard before. It's also a chance to promote community between us all. I'm completely for meeting the set here in Nashville who share similiar musical tastes. God knows we're deprived of having a place to just hanging out with a good bunch of folks and getting to hear some New Order or Pulp or what have you. There just isn't really that opportunity here in Nashville outside of being at a friend's house.

This was actually conceived from a discussion between Muck, Mark Bond from DND and myself about how you can't go out anywhere (now Slowbar jukebox is gone) and listen and dance to all the good music that's out there but no one plays publicly. We've actually gone down to Atlanta to the night they have called Biff! Bang! Pow! which is almost identical to the night we're having. It was so cool as everyone was just talking music and dancing their asses off.

So, I'd love to see all you lads and lasses come out and support us. Yeah, you can stay home and listen to everything we'll play, but haven't we been doing that long enough???

-holeypeacoat

Yes, I'll be dancing when not DJing...on the pole even...bring your peril-sensitive sunglasses tongue.gif

Play the last version of "She's Lost Control" on the Joy Division BBC Sessions album.

I trust that you will play "Girls On Film" at some point, because you should.

"Rock With You" by Michael Jackson
something by Gang of Four
And, something from the Privates new recordings, if you can get them.

I trust that you will play "Girls On Film" at some point, because you should.

"Rock With You" by Michael Jackson
something by Gang of Four
And, something from the Privates new recordings, if you can get them.
Yes, I second the Duran Duran.

And dedicate "Rock With You" to twelve-year-old boys everywhere.....
That's so NA.

If you're going to listen to Hall and Oates, pick a song with a better title, like Privates Eyes or something. It's a damn catchy song though.

I found Hey Ya to be very addictive for a while. It still is actually.

we were talking about which version to use of She's Lost Control...and we opted for the classic UK 45 version...the one without the echo snare. Chris is actually more the JD pro..even though I love them...I'm gonna ask him about the BBC one.

A Gentle Bump and Reminder ...

Tomorrow is the day .... we hope to see as many there as can possibly attend. This is like supporting a local act, band, or what have you ... there will be chilling, dancing, drinking, and etc etc etc. A request sheet, one of the best venues in Nashville in my opinion .... and people everywhere. Give it a shot, if not for one night, I know many are skeptical, I was too .. that's why all of this came to fruition.

Cheers and say "Hi" if you know what the hell I look like ...

Hope this turned out to be a huge success. I believe this is something Nashville really needs. I went to something similar in London a few years ago with good ole' Jim O'Shea, drinking and dancing myself into a series of booze and sweat soaked tiny explosions. As soon as I'm all moved back to town, which I believe will be the second week of december for those of you keeping the box score, I'm definitely gonna make it out to shake a leg.
You know you have problems, with both money and alcohol, when you find yourself shoving beers down your pants outside a Features show.

We're very grateful of the support from everyone here, those that came and those that couldn't but wanted to. All in all, considering the piss poor scheduling (which is just something ya gotta take until you can make it bigger), the weather, and the proximity to Thanksgiving, I thought it went very well:) We've been invited back and as Mr UglyApeMan said, or rather, grunted rather apelike, it's gonna be a word of mouth thing. So, we'll work on the equipment issues and getting the word out. A thought occurred to me about possibly pairing it with a local band or two ..... to help draw, I don't know, what does the survey say?!?

PS: Everyone dancing .... you guys and gals kick ass! wink.gif

I hadn't showed up for "This is Hardcore" yet, which is a shame, because I would have tried to find someone to make out with.

I watched part of the DVD a few weeks ago and it seemed ok. There's no menu so you have to fast-forward if you want to get to a specific song. That's kinda weird...

Thanks to everyone that came out on such short notice ... the Feb date will be announced much sooner (even though I evidently have nothing to contribute to this board and our night is gay and stupid.) Just glad that those that come have A LOT of uncool fun smile.gif

Oh yeah ... and Channel 4 ...errghh ... freakin station;)

I will definitely be at the next "gay and stupid" night! I've thought this thing sounded cool since I first heard about it (in Sept?), but I've managed to miss it every time so far. sad.gif Personally, I think the idea to do this is awesome, and the people responsible for it are awesome. Nashville needs something like this. And hopefully it will make the move to a more accessible night once it's more established. I can't wait for the Feb. show!

And I can say that without fear of repercussions, because you all hate me anyway.

I think the big dilemma we face is getting this thing moved to at least a Thursady night. I really have no desire at this point to compete with weekend happenings. The tough part is that Bruce decides what night of the week it will happen. I really like being at the End but it's hard to get a fair shake on what kind of potential it will have considering being doomed to Tuesday. I'm working very hard to get this changed... for starters.

Thanks to those who came out last time...and big thanks to Gieves coming up and doing an hour and Derek for giving us his new song...it's really great stuff! biggrin.gif
Be still Cody! Be still!!!

There's been a boo-boo and The End forgot to withdraw a date from The Rage. There will be no date on Feb 18th for Different Class ... I'll be in California and it is just way too soon. Hopefully we will get a later date for early March or what have you .... stay tuned.

I assume that was Sina. She did the same thing on the DND messageboard 12 minutes later. You can tell it's her because it oozes cleverness.

Thanks Carl ... didn't seem like a response from Rob. Anyway, yes, if anyone can make it, please do.
