TOPIC: If you're bored this Saturday

Post 1 of 71
Yeah, I know I'm ACTUALLY doing this but if your bored Saturday night, come see my freakin' band! We're playing at the Red Rose with a fabulously trashy band Jimmy and the Teasers (www.jimmyandtheteasers.com). We'll even make it cheap, cause I know everyone's broke like me!

Perhaps my disdain for the aforementioned band is unfair. I mean, all of these people, who I supposedly have similar musical tastes to, thoroughly enjoy Slack. It has been years since I've seen them perform. Maybe it is time to let bygones be bygones and give them another chance. I'll wait until closer to Saturday night to gague my level of ennui.

I'm still pretty positive I dislike Jetpack though. This abrupt shift from closed-mindedness does not cross over to them.

The first time that I saw Slack (which was also the first time I saw the Features - summer 1999 at Sebastian's), I didn't like them at all. But I was going through a certain phase, musically, at the time, where raw hard rock was a real turnoff. Sometime later my opinion changed. Now I think that Slack are awesome. Maybe the same will happen for you, Ceeze. Or maybe not.

Ok, his comment about the ice was in reference to my long held desire to throw ice in the drummer of Jetpack's mouth. This desire stems from the drummer's inability to close his mouth while playing. The end.

I don't ever say anything on this messagebored or board that is... have we heard that joke? Anyhow I often just casually watch over the witty banter exchanged between nashvill-ites (mostly these are inside jokes that I somehow find funny) or, I have occasion to follow what one or two of these members wax moronic about (names have been avoided to protect my relevence). However I will not sit Idlly by while this JetPack* is still being lauded for any musical achievement or innovation, or greater good for any of us. (or even really just making people talk about them, especially myself, my first entry in ages and this is what spawned it? I'm even second guessing my entry right now.) I Have seen said Pack on several occasions during my Nashville stints, and have nothing against the Jet Cadets themselves, In fact I have eavesdropped on a post gig conversation between one or two of the boys and some fans/friends and they seemed like very nice people. (If I liked nice people or if I liked people at all I may have struck up a conversation.) But musically speaking I cant justify the monies I personally have spent on shows where I was unable to avoid it, as well as the admiration given by peers. Abysmal. I agree. I hope i didn't cross any lines, or step on toes or hurt feelings or anything of the sort. ( I know some of you are the sensitive type, emo-tional maybe?) So I'll be signing off for now, please refrain from provoking me into caring about stuff.
* I have heard variations on this monikier, some which I felt were slightly offensive and since offense was not the aim here they were avoided. However if one was curious about these variations all they would have to do is ask andrewjsmithson, I think he carries a list in his pocket.
P.s. I dont know if this thing'll have a little signiture on it and if it does its from when I was drunk and stoned, that is; anytime in the past two years. So Ill write a new one for my own amusement

both of those signatures come andrew-approved, to be certain. i've compiled a lot of similar lists, but that one is very short...i referred to them as sh*tpack, i do know that. it's definitely not personal, and i'm sure they're lovely people. my problem with it i believe you hit right on the head...people going on about how great they are. i'm happy some people like them and i think they're on the right side of the equation...they're not making music that lowers the overall iq of everyone who hears it, or offending my sensibilities in any way. i have avoided seeing them for a long time now, and perhaps they have been reborn...i wouldn't know. i hope so, as i love music and want everything to be much better than it's current state. instead of derivative, lazy, shortsighted, boys-in-the-band-to-get-girls idiocy, i'd like to see bands treating it as an art form, being unapologetically ambitious, pretentious as hell and backing it up with vision...instead of mired in the past, borrowing from it here and there to build something upon it...and if you can't make music that's intelligent and highly evolved, then do something else with your time...i've heard masterbation is good, and it requires little talent or investment of time...i don't mean for this to be about jetpack or something, because it's really not. it's about how much i love music, as well as how much of an arsehole i am. apparently.

I feel like, if anything, I've heard people going on and on about how bad they are. At the very least, I think their music is inoffensive, like you said, and I've never understood why they've inspired such hatred from people. I mean, I can understand (I'm not saying I agree) when people say they hate Popular Genius, because they have enough "different" stuff going on where it can inspire intense opinions in either direction, but Jetpack is just a rock band. That's not to say they are unoriginal, just that I don't think there is any real reason to hate them unless you think they were unworthy of opening for The Features compared to your band, which I think is where at least some of the sentiment comes from, personally. Yes, I know that last statement doesn't apply to you, Andrew.
I TOTALLY AGREE!

i've never heard popular genius, but their name is off-putting. i shouldn't be so critical of bands on the basis of their name alone, but i am--take feable weiner, for instance. the name is so terribly wrong that i can't even bring myself to listen to them...i don't want to ever have to tell someone that i like feable weiner, and the safest way to accomplish that is to avoid them like the plague. people say that they're really good, but unless someone along the line makes them jettison the unbearable imagery that is their nomenclature, i can't see myself giving a damn.

Well, I couldn't agree more. . . at least about the highly evolved stuff and the masterbation bit, and cheers to the love of music. But whether or not this is about JetPack (who indeed err on the side of good, for if you only knew the power of the dark-side...) well, at this point Im done with that topic, but damn it, you at least should hang the title of arsehole over my head. That red-eye of judgement has cast its gaze on me. . . the true arsehole (at least in this situation). So yay for music! and Yay for vindication! and Yay for the show tommorow night! I almost sorta wish i could be there.

usually band names are the first impression you have of any given band. i hated the moniker, "feable weiner", the first time i heard it. having seen the band grow over the past few years, and hearing nearly everyone telling them that they really need to change their name. but now i totally understand the effect.

it's hard to come up with a good bandname these days you know? youre lucky to come up with anything that can stick in someone's mind for more than a day, and that's where i think feable weiner succeed, and i can see that they are.

on their website they have a link to "Stuff" magazine where one of those ridiculous superlative lists awarded them "best band name ever". that's some good press any way you slice it...i'm sure the features will take the opportunity to be mentioned in a mag that widely read when it comes their way.

one of my favorite band names ever is They Might Be Giants...perfect.

everyone take a minute and try to think of a good band name. its more difficult than you would think.

i would contend that it's much easier than you think...i'm a writer, or atleast i try to be, so i know a lot of words. i know a whole hell of a lot of words that don't make me want to vomit when i hear them, so think i could conjure up about 7.5 million band names better than feable weiner. i'm not even saying they would be good names, but that they wouldn't be bad ones. the key is not mentioning A) weiners (B) bodily functions other than rocking out, and C) any kind of foolishness whatsoever. it seems fw have broken two of three of those rules, and that's one worse than hoobastank.

Gerbis, I'm glad you asked.

it would be a soul choir of widowed african-americans called the black widows. "richard dawson and the black widows"

or, a band with paul called "powder p and the MG's"

personally, I like mitch's idea of "The Eyes" and releasing an album called "The Eyes Have It", followed by a psychedelic side project called "The Eyes Sing On The Cake"

The only point I failed to make was that once you start a band and have to settle on what to call yourselves, it can be a bit difficult to come up with something that either adequtely encapsualtes the sentiment of the band, or just plain sounds cool. No big deal.

I suppose I don't...so apologies there. And I would ask what your band name was, since my Google search for a band called "The Fuck" came up mostly naughty websites. But, I'm gonna assume that you either aren't in a band or you that wouldn't say if you were. I do like the band names given so far tho...I just thought it'd be fun to brainstorm, and I certainly didn't mean to chap any cabooses.

I'm pretty sure that name is already in use/has been used. If not, then at least without the "The." And I'm positive there was a band called The Fucks, so there's a lot of room for confusion there...
