TOPIC: Joining a Messageboard/Bulletin Board

Another poll in Carligula's series of "How to promote the Features":

Most of us get pretty annoyed when someone joins a messageboard for the express purpose of promoting their favorite band or (even worse) their own band. I would like to think that Features fans could find ways to spread the Gospel of Daigle without tarnishing the name of The Almighty Features.

So, I'm curious-- would you/have you joined messageboards, bulletin boards, etc, for no other reason than to promote the bands. Are you in favor of/against people doing it? What if a messageboard has a place specifically where members can talk about/promote other bands/shows? Does that make it okay for one's first and only post to be about another band?

Please vote and discuss.

I am a member of another message board, with a whole separate section just for bands. I started a thread on The Features and it's had 323 views so far. It's a mostly UK-based board, too. It doesn't seem to bother anyone.
That's so NA.

None of those choices applied. If the message board is on another band's website, I would not do it. If it was just a general music site or something like that, then I would (well, I wouldn't, but I would have no problem with it).

Do you really need our opinions on this? I think you know what is annoying and what isn't...oh wait. wink.gif
I TOTALLY AGREE!

hahaha, bitch.

No, I don't need anything from any of you (except maybe a utility check from you and RichardDawson). I'm just genuinely curious about how people feel. These polls will likely have little to do with the decision of the management and label. All I can do is offer my opinion and the opinion of the fans when asked for it. I don't claim to know how the fans feel about everything. Hence, these polls.

By the way, your vote if for #3. I never said this was specific for other band's websites. Don't challenge me on how to design a poll, Mr. social scientist.

It really doesn't bother me when people come on here and plug or promote their bands. If it's something I'm not interested in, I just don't read it. It could definitely get annoying if every other post was from some guy promoting his band, but at least its music related. I'd rather have a lot of posts about random musical bands than who's the new hotty on myspace or something. But that's just me. So, yeah, my vote was for the last option.

And what would that opinion be?

It's conditional, so I can't vote for that choice in good conscious.

I think it's completely lame to join a messageboard for the sole purpose of pushing a band on people-- regardless of whether or not it's welcomed. If you are "established" (no I won't define that), I think it's okay. But that wasn't the question.

The fact that you asked my opinion must mean my original post wasn't overtly biased. Cool.

I chose "I have not and would not do so, but I'm not opposed to others doing it".

UNlike alot of people who seem to get pissed when "strangers" join this board just to plug a band, I couldn't care less. Personally, for me, I think that people who do this are wasting their time, because unless the recommendation is from someone I know and trust, I very rarely look into what they're promoting. Actually, it's kind of an auto-response to just ignore the recommendations of strangers here. But like Andrew said about Jedi mind tricks (and like blightman said about lottery commercials), I'm sure the shit works on some poor fools, so have at it.

It's only the internet.

I think that's cause you're an integrated member of the board, and you get support from me!! (and because The Features are good wink.gif )

What really grates with me is when people obviously from some PR Agency or a 'Street Team' join a board to promote a band, and it's a load of copy-and-pasted nonsense that hasn't paid any attention to the etiquette of that particular board.

I think this place has the right idea, where your first post should really be about the band in question... and I'd see through a member who joined purely to promote their favourite band, and that would deter me from looking into the band further.

*rereads the thread*

I couldn't have (and didn't) say it better myself!
