As many people know, this is the 10th anniversary of one of the saddest days in recent rock history. It was on April 5th, 1994 that Kurt Cobain took his life.

Here's the first part of a new 2-part article in the Seatle Times.

It doesn't feel like ten years ago! I remember it like it was yesterday. I was on a camping trip with three friends. We heard the news on the radio. They played alot of Nirvana songs the rest of the night.

My friend called me and told me. I didn't believe him at first. I remember they had Nirvana tribute shows on the radio for days after with interviews, songs, some host telling all about Cobain's life and how huge a deal his death will be. I taped alot of that stuff off the radio and then sold the tapes to the hardcore nirvana fans. I wonder if I still have those tapes....

I was 10 years old, and I remember my aunt being really upset about it. I didn't really get into music until about 2 years later, so the event was pretty much lost on me, I guess I didn't really need to be worrying about suicides when I was 10 anyways.

I had met him (and the rest of the band) about 6 months earlier... it really hit me hard because I had such a great encounter with him... as many of you know, he even bought me tacos.

I remember reading an interview with Stipe in 1995, saying that he and Kurt had been planning to do an album together. I would've loved to hear that!

I sometimes wonder what directions Nirvana's/Kurt's music would have gone if he'd not died.

Right, but I mean 5, 6, 10 years down the line. Like what would Kurt be doing now? Would he be a fan of the White Stripes? Or the Darkness?

Maybe he would have just completly sold out and produced Puddle of Mudd's album. Who knows?

I remember my dad telling me about his suicide, and I remember not really caring. I was nine, I was busy listening to my mom's old Grand Funk Railroad tapes. I kind of got into Nirvina in Jr. High and high school, and occassionaly will listen to a couple of albums, but I never got very "into" the band. I guess I was just too young.

i'm really not a big fan of anything but the Unplugged album. I personally think that they are, at best, the fifth greatest Seattle band, but thats me

Courtney killed his ass ... that bitch was fuckin evil....that's all I have to say. I was never a HUGE Nirvava fan ... I always thought they sounded way too much like Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr for anything too original .. in fact, I think Kurt even admitted that. His loss was no Ian Curtis or CERTAINLY no Elliot Smith ...but it was sad none the less. I knew it effected people.

Yeah, because Elliott Smith was TOTALLY original.

I don't think Nirvana sounded very much like Sonic Youth or Dinosaur Jr at all. If anything, they were ripping off the Pixies.

Puh-fucking-lease. Kurt Cobain's songwriting and musicianship inspired a massive group of people and i think we'll be hardpressed to find a 10th anniversary for Smith's death. and rightly so.

I don't think one should compare the suicides(?) of three great artists as such. Especially when Cobain's contributions have resonated throughout popular music in a way that Smith's haven't (even though I think I enjoy Smith more these days). I mean, considering that most people don't know who Elliott Smith or Ian Curtis were, it's kind of ridiculous to say that they had more to add. I mean, when you get down to it anyway, what the hell is so original about any popular music (especially indie) act that we listen to?

I'm not sure if that's a good thing. I think most of the shit they play on the radio these days was inspired by Nirvana.

id say most of the shit they play on the radio today is inspired by korn and staind. and while those band might say they were inspired by nirvana, i think we can all agree that their "inspiration" isnt found in the music that they write.

and trust me, i know the shit they play on the radio today. 102.9 is played for pretty much 6 hours a day at where i work. Doogie must die.

I would not say korn as much as staind. Every one is trying to get his voice or the guy from creed's voice. Damn posers
