is anyone planning on going to this? i think tickets are on sale today. i was wanting to, but i'm wavering on it now...there's not anybody playing that i want to see that i haven't seen before. i also know i will be able to see the polyphonic spree & the walkmen again pretty soon, separate from the whole mess of the festival...if wilco was going to be there, it would seal the deal but they're not...and according to the walkmen website they're playing it, but if you check the lollapalooza website it doesn't include them at that particular show. hmmm....

I'm definately going although I haven't bought my ticket yet. One day is $45 without any of the service fees. This plus the Curiosa Festival will leave me broke for the whole summer. I just hope it's worth it.

there are several additional bands playing on the dates in chicago (the walkmen, elbow, BRMC, & the thrills, most notably) so i'm debating on whether or not to just go for that one instead. i know it's going to be hot as hell in atlanta anyway. i got my tickets for curiosa, too, but i just got GA-lawn because i'm keen on seeing muse on the other stage more than anything else...

I personally think this is the weakest lineup I've ever seen for Lollapalooza. There. I said it.

thank goodness for the power of credit cards! i still need to buy a ticket. i'm only going one day because of the high prices and what not. if the powers that be allow it, i'll be attendance for both days. we'll just have to wait and see. but yeah....i'm sooo there!!!

i'll be the drunk guy yelling for "burning spear" during sonic youth's set.
We have about 1500 songs.....all of them good!

Sonic Youth. Mike Watt. Flaming Lips.

Sorry guys. From MTV.com:

Three weeks prior to kickoff, Lollapalooza has been canceled.

Organizers cited poor ticket sales as the reason the 31-date, 16-city trek was called off. This year's lineup was set to include Morrissey, Sonic Youth, PJ Harvey, the Flaming Lips and the String Cheese Incident (see "Lollapalooza Adds Danger Mouse, Von Bondies; Dates Unveiled").

"The sadness upon hearing about the dismantlement of our tour has quickly turned to anger," read a statement from Lollapalooza co-founder Perry Farrell. "To watch something that you put so many hours of love and time into set ablaze sets my pride on fire. But, like the Phoenix, we still intend to rise. Our campaign will continue for the musicians, the artists, and all those attempting to change the world. Our voices will be heard."

The decision to scrap Lollapalooza was made Monday evening (June 21), when organizers and promoters realized they stood to lose several million dollars. In all markets except New York, advance ticket sales were below estimates.

"On the average, the losses, had ticket sales not dramatically picked up — which they showed no indication of doing — the people involved faced losses in the mid-to-high six figures on a per-show basis," said the William Morris Agency's Marc Geiger, another Lollapalooza co-founder.

Fans who purchased tickets will be given refunds.

Geiger said Lollapalooza's plight is indicative of a summer touring season on the slide.

"Lollapalooza is not alone in this," he said. "Everyone from the Dead to Dave Matthews to Norah Jones is suffering. There's not one explanation for this. It might be that ticket prices are too high, which doesn't account for Lollapalooza, because our tickets were priced between $15 and $25. Maybe it's the sundry add-ons [like service charges] that up the cost? Maybe gas prices are too high? Just like the record industry is suffering, the concert business is not exempt.

"After people get through this summer season," he added, "there's going to be a lot of fixing that needs to be done in the concert industry."

Early on in its 13-year history, Lollapalooza built a reputation for eclectic lineups, but as the years wore on it became more well known for having trouble getting off the ground (see "Perry Hits Lollapasnooza Button: Tour Sleeps Another Year"). After 1997's outing with Korn, Tool and Snoop Dogg, the tour lied dormant until last year, when it returned with a lineup that featured Jane's Addiction, Queens of the Stone Age and Audioslave (see "Jane's Addiction Headline But Audioslave Steal Show At Lollapalooza Launch").

not ironic at all...the "best lineup in a decade" as some have called it (and it is) gets cancelled do to poor sales. Unbelievable. Folks this is a sad day. I can take a lot...I can put up with a lot of shitty ass "music" making a lot of money but this really tests my patience. There is no justice in this fucking world. I am pissed.

This is the kind of shit that only happens in America. Don't beleive me? when is the last time you saw glastonbury or leeds/reading cancelled?

i was considering going to the chicago one--the lineup would have been better than the atlanta show with the additional bands: the thrills & the walkmen, on top of the standards (morrissey, the polyphonic spree, broken social scene, etc)...i was really excited about it, but it was, as you say, too good to be true. this kind of shit would never happen at glasto or reading...those tickets are very difficult to get and they go fast. yep, our country sucks. musically-speaking, of course. but, hell, i'm surprised the rabid morrissey fans alone didn't snatch up enough tickets to greenlight the event...it was the best lineup for lollapalooza i've ever seen. so, yeah, predictable, then.

This is really terrible news. I had been looking forward to this since April. There were so many great bands and it would have been well worth the ticket price. Morrissey alone can charge $50 a ticket and then add Sonic Youth and other bands to the mix and it really was a good deal. I was actually planning on buying my ticket today on my break. sad.gif
