TOPIC: Lylas @ Sutler; Mattoid @ Springwater

Post 1 of 37
For those of you interested, the Lylas are playing a $3 show at the Sutler tonight for their CD release party. Show starts promptly at 9 with Stone Jack Jones opening. The Lylas are second and there's a third band closing out the show. It should all be over relatively early. The Lylas album is on the Cleft label, which also hosts The Mattoid. Speaking of the Mattoid, they are playing at the Springwater late tonight, possibly around midnight.

That is correct, thank you. Will anyone else be at any of these shows? I may be at both, at least to see the Lylas and Mattoid.

Springwater for me. That prick of a doorman/booker Tyler from the Red Rose is also playing (under the name "The Falling"). He sure sings real purty. I don't want to miss that. I am beyond excited about seeing the awesomeness that is the Mattoid in person. Thanks to RD for the bootleg!

I don't know....I'd like to go. At the moment, I don't have a damn thing to do tonight.

Are they 21+?

My advice for the youngin's (especially those in Murfreesboro): Go see Imaginary Baseball League at the 'Boro (it's 18+) or Feable Weiner at the Red Rose (it's all ages). Damn, it's a pretty good night for music here in middle Tennessee.

The Falling was his old band - did Black Soul Choir break up or something? I saw The Falling, but never the newest band.

The Falling has always been Tyler plus some other guys. The original drummer was Simon who is (was?) in Dixie Dirt-- who is also playing tonight and the bassist was some guy named Kevin who moved back to Texas, leaving them as a two-piece. Tyler and Simon eventually parted ways and since that time Tyler's had a revolving line-up. Brian from Verde even played drums for a tour a few years back-- and loved every minute of it. Tyler eventually settled in with a fairly stable line-up and decided to re-name the band The Black Soul Choir because the music had changed so much over the past 4 or 5 years.

Lately, Tyler has been playing solo (or as a duo with Michael Acree) under the old name. He still plays some of the old stuff along with some new. It's pretty different from what the BSC plays these days. From what Tyler's said, the BSC is still alive, just taking a break while he tours with Acree this fall.

Like I said, I'm pretty excited about this show.

i would like to say now that this show sucked. the mattoid didn't play, and i was falling asleep. i mean, not that tyler and acree were horrible... but it wasn't worth wasting a night for. you have to admit everyone else who played must have been on a lot of crack.

i wish we would've gone to see lylas, just didn't think we'd make it in time due to previous plans..... stupid night.

I went to see Lylas at the Sutler. Their music was quite interesting, albeit a wee bit sleepy. What I really wanted to say, though, is that our very own ROADIE is one hell of a pedal steel player! He's had the damn thing for going on a year now, but this is the first time I've seen him play it. He'll try to be really modest about it, but he is very, very good.

P.S. They played a country-fied version of "Purple Rain." Holla!

1) The Mattoid did play. He was the last guy. It was just him on the electric guitar. Apparently his entire band was either playing or attending the Lylas show. I'm not sure what you're smoking, cause he was awesome. He covered Elenory Rigby and Here, There, and Everywhere (I'm sure Sexy Sadie would have loved it-- okay, maybe not). More importantly, he played the Makin' Love song and finished (Finnish?) with Party Time. My only complaint was that he didn't play Funeral Party and no ladies in the crowd tried to flirt with him.

2) I hardly considered the show a waste of a night. Tyler and Michael's set was so-so (they've each had much better sets), but I still had a great time. It definitely wasn't a waste of money as no one ever bothered to charge me and I didn't buy any beer due to my driver status.

3) Mad Happy was clearly on crack, but I missed most of their set when I walked over to Wendy's.

4) The first guy cracked me up! He was hilarious! He actually broke out some CHEERS! Crazy!

Okay, none of the music was stellar, but I found it highly entertaining. What can I say-- I'm easily entertained. I guess that explains why I'm such a big De Novo Dahl fan biggrin.gif

I ended up seeing Imaginary Baseball League at the 'Boro. I was pleased as punch with the opening bands, because I have some sort of unusual hatred for opening bands nine times out of ten. But I thought The Glass and Dixie Dirt were A-Ok. During the IBL set, there was a So-Cal in front of me who kept jerking his arms about, and I was afraid I was going to get an elbow to the eye. He asked the band to "play the one with the riff." Then this girl came up in a leopard skin coat and asked him to pet the kitty. The best part about going to shows is there is always more than one show to see.

Imaginary Baseball League was quite good last night. I was a happy kitty, indeed.

sexy sadie and i have heard the cover of eleanor rigby because of RD's bootleg of the show on the 7th or 8th(?). the random "fuck you's" that were inserted during the song were amusing. they are a good band, but i would prefer if they kept away from the beatles. smile.gif

no, it doesn't count.... cause i wanted to see the full band. you're right, i mean, it was only 3 dollars, but it was still frustrating cause if i had known what was going to happen, i would've only stayed for the cheerleader and then gone over to see luke play pedal steel. but noooo.... i guess i just should've gone to the sutler. oh well, they'll play again. at least the cheers were highly entertaining. i saw you laughing, though, carl, so i knew you liked it. i think it just god old after like 3 hours

Yeah, I know what you're saying. No one will ever do it better that Geaorge, Paul, John, and Ringo, but it's always entertaining to hear someone else's take on the classsics. Especially if that someone is a big scary Finnish dude with no eyebrows wearing a cape.

Since I didn't have any money and I had close to an empty tank of gas, I didn't make it to the Lylas or the Mattoid. I was very sad, but it was beyond my control. I'll get that disc to you at a show sometime soon.

I enjoyed the lylas cd release party...everyone should be kicking themselves for missing the Prince cover alone. Seriously...it was so utterly awesome. I had only had three hrs. of sleep the night before b/c of the shins, but enjoyed myself none the less. We should try to redo the bowling idea some other time!!!

Sadly, no.

The world of rock and roll, even quiet rock and roll, is a tumultuous one. Musicians struggle to keep the same people together, competing with jobs, families, money, cars, school, and whatever else. It is harder to switch out members than to just stay with who you've got. Since they've been playing with Brice since May now, he will continue to play with them. I totally understand that, especially if I go home to Richmond, VA again over the summer. There's no sense in switching people back and forth. I will definitely be at some Lylas shows and I'll hang out with Kyle and the boys as much as I can. And I will find a musical outlet of my own...
