Well, tonight was my first time to see Morrissey in concert, and I was very impressed. I didn't keep track of the setlist, but the formula was as follows:
OLD SONG
NEW SONG
OLD SONG
NEW SONG
OLD SONG
NEW SONG
etc, etc, etc
I wish he'd played more older material, but hey, he did play some Smiths songs, so I can't really complain. Other thoughts:
-I was embarassed and somewhat surprised to see so many empty seats. Are there really not enough Morrissey/Smiths fans in Nashville to fill the Ryman? I mean, it's not like this is someone who plays here every couple of years. This was the first time (and probably the only time) he will play Nashville, yet the balcony was only 2/3 full. Oh well. I guess it's always been that way.
-What a charismatic showman Morrissey is! And so engaging. I felt like I was seeing Dino or Sinatra.
-It was a great band that Morrissey had. It was nice to see what Boz Boorman looks like.
-Very cool stage design, too.
-The ending of the show was one of the most bizarre things I've ever seen. Towards the end of the show, there were a couple of different guys from the audience who climbed up on stage to try to hug/kiss Morrissey before being dragged off by security. Although it was amusing, I didn't think much of it. Well, in the first song of the encore, another guy did the same, but this time it turned into chaos as no less than a dozen people (all males, as far as I could tell) climbed up onstage to try to touch Morrissey. It was apparently more than security could handle, so they just whisked Morrissey offstage, and that was it. House lights up, show over. Thanks, fanboys. Anyway, my friend told me that this is
common at Morrissey shows and that the other show he'd been to in Atlanta ended the same way. In fact, he told me, another of our friends who was there and had been sitting with him
knew from experience that as soon as the first person got on stage, it was the beginning of the end, so he
went ahead and left! Unbelievable! I've never seen anything like it before.
