What bands/singers have been making music that has stood out the most?

Man, he's such a talent! He's the next fucking Hendrix and y'all better recognize. You'll all be kicking yourselves in the ass when he goes on tour with the Monkees.

actually i think john mayer gets a "semi" bad rap. id say about 60% of his music is crap, he has a horrible live show, and he comes off as way too cocky in his interviews/articles.

But! he has about 40% of his music that includes some really nice chord changes and some interesting ideas. i can at least appreciate that. and i think anyone with a musical ear and an open mind would have to agree.
Eh.

I like John Mayer. He's a great songwriter.

A band that I heard the other day that really impressed me was Broadcast. I know that they've been discussed on this MB before, but I was just recently exposed and really liked what I heard.
Relevant: Prince, PT Anderson, Punk, Post-Punk, Purple, Party of Five, Peter Swanson, Peter Gabriel-led Genesis, "Peter Panic", Paul's Boutique, Potential Energy, Every Features MB member but me.

I love Broadcast, as well. People have said they are a "lesser Stereolab," but I don't see it that way. Seeing them with Manitoba only increased my love.
Why would you do that?

I saw Broadcast recently with The Projects (featuring ex-stereolab member) supporting... Broadcast blew me away. The Projects didn't come close really, as much as I love them. That voice! Those drums! Not many people are doing that sound at the moment.

I haven't heard the album, but No Not Now is superb, and Bandages has been quite a anthem for me this year.... I saw them at quite a sweaty gig this year too which was quite fab.

They've been around for a while though, since like 1991.

Stellastarr* and Steve Burns are two newer artists with impressive debut releases. Also check out White Light Motorcade and the Burning Brides.

No shit, sina.

But the fact that they were pretty obscure when their first record came out, and it was a while between that and the EP, means it can qualify as "new" music. (does that make any sense?)

there are several bands

mentioned on this thread

that are not new.
