excitement? if your wondering what David Pajo did before Zwan and what he is currently doing then go to this show. it will rock, it will be a night to remember. just listen to "Live From a Shark Cage" then you will know what i'm talking about.
We have about 1500 songs.....all of them good!

I’m definitely planning on going. I saw Papa M a couple of times in Chattanooga back when he was doing the melodic instrumental thing (which was excellent), but have yet to see him in his new singer/songwriter incarnation. I love his three recent eps, and I’m really looking forward to this show.

And Character is opening the show if I'm not mistaken. Monday October 6th.
I TOTALLY AGREE!

I'm a little bitter about this show. Aside from being totally ass-dicked because of indie rock politics I have to say that the show itself was pretty sub-par (except for my rock ass band of course, booyah!). Spiritual Family Reunion was good, but Papa M and the hack that he brought with him, Entrance, didn't really do it for me. I've heard Live From a Shark Cage and it's beautiful. But what I saw out of Mr. M on Monday was pretty lame. There were moments of course. There are always glimpses of former glory in any defunct/washed up artist. The highlight was the end of the show when Pajo and Co. dove into a faux-Hendrix blues-rock-with-wah-and-delay affair. It amazes me the extent to which people will tolerate insipid jamming out of indie rockers but when a "jam band" does it that makes it somehow unacceptable. It's just more evidence of the hypocritical bullshit that permeates so much indie rock these days. That said, I have to give props to the drummer. Besides being a hell of a nice guy he impressed me by playing drums and bass simultaneously, something I'm sure has been done, but that I've never really seen before. That's all. I'll shut up now.

It's because one is entertaining to listen to when performed well and the other is not. Don't ask me to explain the reasons why one is entertaining and the other is not, because I don't think I could come up with a satisfactory answer for you. I think "jam music" is not exciting and rock jamming can be, when performed by certain people. It really just boils down to personal preference.

It's true.

Often times, people hate jam bands because of the audience that is stereotypically associated with those bands. Indie kids hate hippies, and they hate frat boys even more. So in his mind, Joe Blow equates the band with the despised subcultures inhabited by many of their fans. To the casual music fan, music is often never part of the equation at all.

And so it follows that if you took actual music that would normally be presented in a "jam band" context, stripped away the patchouli, the dreadlocks, the whitehats, and the rich aroma of marijuana, and replaced those things with chuck taylors, thick-rim glasses, vintage clothes, and PBRs, then the indie kids, safe in their comfort zones, would listen to the music and make judgements in a completely different way.

One of my best friends is a hippie. They're so nice. How can you not like them? And, they're very generous with their drugs.

Frat boys...some of them are nice and some of them are arrogant bitches, it's a toss-up really.

I'll concede your points about the subculture. However, I feel like you could dress what Pajo was doing in a different package and the same people that loved it at the show would hate it. But maybe I'm missing the subtleties at work here.

At one point, Character was flirting with the jam band world, weren't they?

Yeah but if you tour as much as Phish and Widespread Panic, you won't have girlfriends anymore. Unless stopforme and I can sell magic burritos in the parking lot.

Does four keyboards count as a jam band or is that "deconstructing boundaries" or something?

Four keyboards definitely counts as a jamband. I've said countless times that the Wrong Angles are a glorified jamband. I mean, it's all improvised.

I'm curious about the details of this. Is this a financial dicking or a temporal dicking? If you'd like to elaborate, feel free.

It's been way too long since I've seen Character. I have yet to really be blown away by them, but I've been wanting to give 'em another chance for a long time now.

I have loved Character since the first time I saw them, but I have always seen many similarities to "jam" bands. If you look at a lot of Phish stuff like the recoded versions of You Enjoy Myself, Geulah Papyrus or Stash (I assume I just lost 90% of you), they are playing long songs with little or no vocals, but they are almost completely composed. Very little improvisation. Character plays music which in that respect, isn't much different. They just focus more on melody than chops unlike Phish a lot of the time.
I TOTALLY AGREE!

I think the short version of the story is, after The End asked them to play the show, they made them play first out of 4 bands, and on top of that they could only play for 20 minutes.

Totally. We can only take so much of this soulmate-switching, "forgetting" us in important lists, and generally trying to boss us around. You've been lording over us ever since our days in the womb, and we're not gonna take it anymore. Plus, we think maybe you have a different dad because we're obviously German & you're like foreign or something. There's something you need to ask Mom about...

back to the subject at hand...............

the show was awesome...it really sucked character only got 20 minutes. i figured with a 4 band bill they would play early so i got there super early in order to see them. i didn't care for the other two acts really. Pajo and company were fantastic. i'm glad i got to see this recent version of Papa M. the songs at times di seem jammy but who cares really. he's a primarily instrumental act. also after seeing pajo and paz a few times in zwan it was cool to see them diving into other realms of music. they did a great job and hope they make their back again.
We have about 1500 songs.....all of them good!
