It amazes me the extent to which people will tolerate insipid jamming out of indie rockers but when a "jam band" does it that makes it somehow unacceptable.
It's true.
Often times, people hate jam bands because of the audience that is stereotypically associated with those bands. Indie kids hate hippies, and they hate frat boys even more. So in his mind, Joe Blow equates the band with the despised subcultures inhabited by many of their fans. To the casual music fan,
music is often never part of the equation at all.
And so it follows that if you took actual music that would normally be presented in a "jam band" context, stripped away the patchouli, the dreadlocks, the whitehats, and the rich aroma of marijuana, and replaced those things with chuck taylors, thick-rim glasses, vintage clothes, and PBRs, then the indie kids, safe in their comfort zones, would listen to the music and make judgements in a completely different way.
