Warning: Shameless Plug Ahead.
So, this summer I am interning with Playback STL. I've read their magazine a little over two years, and fell in love with it. It was started in April 2002 with the goal of promoting arts and entertainment in and around St. Louis. We feature artists who are from St. Louis or passing through; past cover stories and profiles have included OK Go, Jonathan Richman, SuicideGirls.com, Cursive, St. Louis International Film Festival, David Seadaris, Laurell K. Hamilton, Nadine, Elbow, Bonnaroo and hundreds of other local, national, and international artists. Each issues features profiles and interviews, a monthly events calendar, and reviews of CDs, movies, books, and live performances.
Right now Playback is distributed free to over 400 locations, with 14,000 copies in the metro St. Louis and outlying cities.
It's informative and contains some of the best writing and design I've seen (though the website needs some work.)
It's basically produced every month by Laura Hamlett and Jim Dunn, husband and wife, out of their upstairs office. Everyone else is a contributor who works for free or substantial stipends.
So check it out, please. Tell me what you think. They're always looking for ways to improve. I can send issues to people if you'd like, and if anyone has any ideas on where to possibly distribute in Nahsville, or wouldn't mind if I sent them magazines to drop off at Exit/In or 12th & Porter or the one million coffee places you might frequent that would be lovely... really, lovely.
And if anyone wants to contribute writing - reviews, previews, let me know, too. Very few people are as passionate about music as most of you on the board are, and your insight and contributions could help the progress of not only this magazine, but also the way in which people view music. Especially when it seems people are beyond apathetic (Lollapallooza cancelling, etc.)
Anyways, give it a scan. I'd appreciate it.
