TOPIC: Polyphonic Spree at SoBro Summer Nights?
Posted  Tuesday, July 13, 2004 at 4:15 PM
Post 1 of 31
I think it was already mentioned on this MB a few weeks ago, but Brad About You leaked that the Polyphonic Spree was playing the SoBro Summer Nights festival on Friday, July 30th. Does anyone know if that's the case? It's not on TPS's website (or the SoBro website), but they do have a brand new album to support. Plus, cancelling Lollapalooza probably freed up their summer.

I'm hoping this isn't the case, cause I'll be out of town.

what are you talking about it not being on the SoBro's site? when I checked it out a few days ago, it said the Polyphonic Spree is sceduled for the 30th.
Whoa. Just checked it out. I swear less than 2 days ago, it had that the Polyphonic Spree was scheduled. strange.

I thought the same thing, but checked the Tennessean archives and it said SoBro.

Do you think they're big enough to headline DitD?

big enough to headline ditd? sure. the only question is really if they are washed-up and irrelevant enough to headline--i mean, have you seen some of the bands they book? the spin doctors, for heaven's sake! the motherfucking spin doctors!!!

i remember reading it in the paper, and it definitely said ditd, not sobro, no matter what the archives say about it. peter swanson will back me up on this, as he called me that morning to tell me that the paper said they were playing ditd on july 31st. so either that was wrong, or the archives are wrong, or maybe we're all wrong and they aren't playing anywhere in nashville at the end of the month. if the latter is the case, we should lynch brad schmitt--as if we even needed a reason to do so.

Dude, I came so close to asking that very same question!

I will point out that the Spin Doctors are not headlining that one, so DitD gets some credit. In fact, the headliners are... let's see... oh... ummm... it says here... oh, geez... Collective Soul. Nevermind.

I'm so glad The Features got to open for Cake.

i've begun my campaign to harrass the people at mad booking into telling me the scoop on the spree, but i've got nothing but suspicions so far...

dancing and the district and sobro summernights are both booked by the same people, the aforementioned mad booking...well, most interestingly, sobro summernights has a 'special guest' listed on july 30, and then the next night, dancing in the district has a 'special guest' on their bill...most intriguing, yes? is it possible that "brad about you" accidentally let the cat out of the hamper, and mad booking has made every effort to stuff it back in? the real question is, why would the polyphonic spree constitute a 'special guest' in the first place? because they are actually good, and not has-beens, like everyone else they've booked? well, this is pure speculation on my part, and maybe these coincidences have fuck all to do with each other. it would be excellent if they were to play both nights, but, all things considered, that would be a non sequiter on par with the mets winning the world series of 1969. a miracle, then.

I saw a flyer outside of Sportsman's Grill north of Hillsboro Village advertising all 8 weeks of SoBro. Polyphonic Spree were the sole band listed for the second week (July 30th). I would assume the flyer was printed around the same time the site reported that they were playing (before removing it).

this is all the response i got from the spree's management:

doesn't look like we will be there any time soon...will make it there in
the near future...

-cp

which doesn't really tell me much, other than that this cp evidently regards "soon" and "the near future" as totally different things.

i wonder what's with all the false alarms then, if they're not playing here...weird.

This week's Nashville Scene lists them as playing at SoBro...not that that necessarily means anything.

I assumed the They Might Be Giants show was a success. Of course, if that one show didn't make much money and I ran the thing, I would definitely cut my losses. Did anyone go? How was the crowd?

I would have assumed that too, but they didn't advertise it all that well. I think I'm just bitter and cynical, so I automatically assume that the money in this town won't produce an event if it won't make them a buck.
Sucks that it got cancelled though. I was looking forward to seeing Mindy Smith.

I don't want it to sound like I'm saying "I told you so," but I had a feeling, when they started announcing all of these new outdoor concert series, that it was more than the market would bear, so to speak.

So no? I was curious myself, but didn't get to go. Well, I guess it's R.I.P. for SoBro. Yadadada, myself, and some friends actually attempted to attend the D.I.D. Spin Drs./Collective Soul show a few weeks back...but we had planned to see it from the roof of Graham Central Station, which had advertised they'd be open. The cover was cheaper than the ticket price, and we figured we'd get to sit up there and have some good alcohol and not feel too bad if the show totally sucked. When that advertising proved to be false, we briefly considered paying the full price to go in the "park" and drink shitty beer and what not...but then we wised up and went home instead. Did anyone attend that show? While we were standing outside we heard the guy from the Spin Doctors lamenting the lack of crowd attendance and participation while we deliberated outside. How sad.
