TOPIC: Rare Tennessee CDs you have

So, what rare out of print CDs do you have from the Tennessee scene? (Examples: Jetpack's "High School Girls" EP, Slack's "Sorry To Drop This On You") Just curious.

I got a Feable Weiner EPK. For rare stuff from TN, that's about it...the rest is still available.

A friend of mine has a CD called "Tennessee Tracks," which features all kinds of bands who aren't around any more. The main thing of note is Superdrag covering the Beatles "Don't Let Me Down." John Davis forgets the words in the 2nd verse. Priceless.

As for me, it looks like I'm finally laying my mitts on a copy of Spongebath Sampler Vol. 1. That's about as good as it gets for me, as best I can remember.

I've got an "Area Code 615" single on 45 that I found at Goodwill. It's a bunch of sessions players from Nashville in the 60's, who worked on Dylan albums and all kinds of stuff like that. It turns out that my uncle, who played the banjo on Hee Haw, played the guitar and banjo on the single and lps. It was the coolest thing ever.

In addition to both of those, I have the Fair Verona EP (which I bought at Media Play?), Imaginary Baseball League's Letter EP (that they seriously need to reissue), and the original Features EP. That's all I can think of right now.

What I really want:
-both of the Spongebath samplers
-Breakfast With Girls on vinyl
-the Ella Minopy EP
Relevant: Prince, PT Anderson, Punk, Post-Punk, Purple, Party of Five, Peter Swanson, Peter Gabriel-led Genesis, "Peter Panic", Paul's Boutique, Potential Energy, Every Features MB member but me.

I have all of the Features' stuff. I also have all of the Fluid Ounces CD's except for a Japanese copy of In the New Old Fashioned Way. I have one the Spongebath samplers, and I'm actively trying to get the other.

I also have a couple of CD's that feature the artists from Knoxville's Ripcord Records. They're both from the mid '90's. Most notably, they feature Superdrag and list John Davis's home address as the band's contact information.

I keep meaning to give you 3 songs from it.

I'll try to add it to the growing list of CDs I want to give people.

Matt. We ended up rooming together at UTC our freshman year of college. We both left that school after that year, but still keep in close contact.

NO SHIT?! That's awesome! I love Matt, but I haven't seen him in almost a year. I think that he has moved to Chicago to pursue a music career. I have his band's newest CD. I'll make you a copy if you don't already have one.

I have the EP and the full-length, as well as a bootleg.

I guess that counts as a Tennessee rarity (to put this discussion back on topic biggrin.gif )

Well...it's not always as glamorous as it seems.

Why the facination with local bands? Did you once live in TN?

I've found that www.gemm.com is a good place to look for hard-to-find music. In fact, I just did a quick search there and found the Slack album. Or you could take a vacation to Nashville - I'll bet that one weekend in the used CD stores here would find almost everything you're looking for.

My rarities are all spongebath related: Half Baked Serenade, Gizmodgery, The Features EP, Spongebath Sampler number 1 (looking for 2), the Fluid Ounces albums (other than the latest, which I still need to find somewhere), and the crown jewel: A copy of Vegetable Kingdom that was autographed by all of Fluid Ounces.

You might try contacting the band. Last I checked, they a had a few in their personal collection. Tell 'em Carligula sent you. Wait, don't do that. It'll probably lessen your chance of getting that CD.

jamiecarrol: Thanks for the link, I'll hopefully manage to nab that Slack CD as soon as I've got the money to pay for it. (I've currently got about $920 but every cent of that is going to fund a little project of mine in coordinance with a Tennessee/Nashville band. Basically I'm playing the role of a record label...) The funny thing about the whole trip to Tennesee idea is that I'm too young to drive. Go figure.

About my obsession with the Tennessee scene: simply put, you guys have a plethora of amazing bands. It's really jaw-dropping that such a wonderful assortment of fantastic musical talent is located within one state. Meanwhile, over here in Pennsylvania, we've got jack shit. Honestly I can't name a single indie band here. I saw one once whilst driving past a soccer game which had some band that was playing on the side to a somewhat small crowd (seemed like a real band, not just covers or something) but that was all I've ever seen. Philly's a big music town, but all we have is jazz and other crap that fails to tickle my fancy.

Carligula: Thanks for the tip, but they ask on their Updates page that we stop inquiring about it, so I figured I'd rather stay on their good side than risk it. Just hope the copy jamiecarrol mentioned will hold out for a month or so...(By the way, I'm "JD" on your message board if you couldn't tell)

Uh...how does a solid $0.00 per hour sound? Slave wage is the name of the game around these parts.

Yeah, I'm 15 and starting a label. Called "Heatstroke Records." You'll definitely be hearing more about it in some form or another within the next month...(hey, if no one else tells you, I will smile.gif) I'd like to imagine that it'll be some form of conversation sooner or later...at the very least Jason Bullock (producer of the band I'm putting out) and about 30 others have heard of it already so that's pretty cool. But really I'm just super happy to be able to do some worthwhile with my life at age 15 rather than just tool around watching TV instead. (I go to a really difficult school, and I'm doing homework during the one show I wouldn't mind watching, so I just go on the net and work on label-related matters. It's the spice of my life biggrin.gif)

Holy shit did I just go off on a rant. Please excuse the nonsense.

Oh, hey, while on the topic, does anybody remember Jetpack's old EP? It's not even mentioned on their official site but on their MP3.com page they have a song from it (Rock Your Face Off) and everything and fans mention the song numerous times in old guestbook entries, so I'm sure it exists, but...it sounds really different from what they are today. Anybody know of it?

SPONGEBATH SAMPLER VOL. 1 just came in the mail. Now, my life is complete. It's OK for me to die now, for I will die a happy man. cool.gif

Also in the mail came a replacement copy of Self's Gizmodgery. Mine was stolen from Token's car last year, and it's taken me this long to get it back. I got the Japanese version, which has a bonus track and inferior packaging.

That one is also excellent. The cool thing is, they have more than enough material for another really solid EP right now (i.e. Fat Boys (Aren't Athletes), New AM, Never Call, etc.).
