TOPIC: Rockin Local shows
Posted  Friday, January 2, 2004 at 4:42 PM
Post 1 of 53
So, it's been pretty dry for local shows lately. That all ends this saturday (1/3) when the Luxury Liners and Rich Creamy Paint play the Sutler. Be there!

Other January shows I'm looking forward to:
Forget Cassettes and Lone Official, Sun the 11th @ the End
Imaginary Baseball League and Glossary, Fri the 16th @ Blue Sky Court

Of course, there will also be several road trip opportunities to see The Features as well...

That might be true. I would assume they would like a proper send-off before their UK tour. Plus, they're playing a handful of shows around the south between now and then, so they're obviously in a touring mood. Maybe they're waiting to announce it later so we can all make plans to see the out of town shows... dirty bastards.

I've made two trips to the World's Largest Adult Bookstore. Once was a year and a half ago and they had this underground level with more porn and shit. I returned a couple of weeks ago with Sketch Club members Powder P and Doobie Bear, only to find that the entire downstairs was now...an upscale furniture shoppe?! This has cover-up written all over it, but I didn't want to blow my cover by looking around too much. Can anyone tell me what is actually hidden down there?

*Also, there was zero signage for this supposed furniture shoppe on the outside, which is what piqued my suspicion.

I must know what is actually in this underground room. There is a hidden door or something that leads to the whorehouse. I know it. I think it's time for espionage.

Yeah, it will be so righteous. By the way, aren't those same three bands playing a show at my apartment two weeks later on my birthday, as part of the second annual Rob Rickman Birthday Party Bonanza Extravanganza? ...I thought so. Did I mention that I just found out that I'm in the early stages of MS? And didn't you also mention wanting the play the show free of charge? Yeah, man, both of those shows will kick ass.

There's a "realtor" near my Dad's house that has been busted for prostitution. I think the fact that it's on the second story, open very late at night, and has a neon "OPEN" sign tipped them off...Oddly, it's still open even after being busted. For all those times you just have to buy a *house* at 2:00 AM on a Saturday morning??

Sorry, this post is off topic...but the upcoming shows will rock! Hopefully, they won't all be on Friday nights (stupid class...).

I think my supposed negativity is the least of the "scene's" concerns. If I was going to rank what kills the scene, I would put the apathy of the general community at the top of my list. However, I don't care enough to think about it too much.

If I remember correctly, that "bookstore" was part of a citywide anti-selling sex sting that took place a year or 2 ago. Anyone else remember? Another place down the street from my old house was busted because it was essentially a brothel, and I think Private Dancer also got in trouble. I read about all of this in the Scene when it happened. I think that downstairs part was where the video viewing booths (and Bingo) were- convenient holes in the walls between booths & everything.

Yes, in the spring of 2002, Metro Police radied and shut down all of the "massage parlors," "dance studios," and "whirlpool rentals." I didn't know that the World's Largest was involved in prostitution, but I think that Metro also cracked down on peep shows, so maybe that's what was in the basement.

For the record, that place is now called Ken's Karaokee Box and it rules!!! I went to a friend's b-day party there saturday night and about 10 of us drank beer, ate sushi (catered from Ken's Sushi) and had a private karaokee party. It was like $35 for 2 hours, but they let us stay for 3!

You can totally tell that this place was at one time (if still not currently) quite shady. For instance, we were required to use the "rear entrance". Unfortunately, there was no "sensual massage with happy ending" in it for me.
