Welcome Brian!

1) If you can't find this thread in the future, it's because it's been moved to the proper forum under Misc->Music by our beloved webmasters. (Yeah, I know the Features are in your list, but the focus is not really on them here.)

2) I would add De Novo Dahl, Forget Cassettes, IBL, Slack, Jetpack, The Privates, and the Luxury Liners (plus a few others I'm sure I'm blanking on right now.

3) Congratulations on professing your love for the Features in your first two posts, you've already dodged several bullets there

4) Get ready for Sina to tell you that you and your band suck. Don't take it personally. Many people are especially critical here, mostly becasue we have the Features as a standard. For the record, I've seen you guys play and wasn't too bowled over.

5) Oh, and the signature is a bit obnoxious (not that I have room to talk). You won't find a lot of giant pictures at the bottom of people's posts here. Just a personal preference.

You posted in the wrong forum, but since you listed Verde, you are forgiven. Anyway, since you are posting here at the De Novo Dahl message bored, you should probably check them out. I also recommend Hotpipes, Lone Official, Sam Ashworth, Slack, Jetpack and I'm sure I'm leaving out quite a few, but that's a start.
I TOTALLY AGREE!

Hey- sorry about the big picture. I'm just trying to be awesome. (right?)
And also carligula... Thanks for saying my band sucks and that you really like the features... So do I.
I have seen Jetpack, and De Novo Dahl who I must have forgotten because I thought they were really good too. I also really like The Imaginary Baseball League. I still haven't seen Slack, but I've heard that they are good.

Thank you, sir. All credit goes to the webmaster Zach (who, while we're plugging great bands, is in Mostly Robot). I'm just the inspiration.

By the way, I never said your band sucked. It's just not my bag. I respect what you're doing, however. I can especially appreciate a "christian" band (I think that's right, isn't it?) that's not so in-your-face about it. Not having any musical talent whatsoever, my opinion is far from significant. And like I said, we're all spoiled on the almighty Features (which is why we're all here in the first place).

By the way, I appreciate that you removed the picture from your signature.

That's a good point, I suppose. But I don't feel that I'm as qualified as say, yourself, who knows something about making music as to whether or not a band is good as opposed to whether or not I like a band. To use your analogy, I think Peace Frog, BrianW, Wiyum, etc, may be a bit more qualified to judge the merits of a movie as they are studying or at one time studied film. Everyone is entitled to their opinion of art, though.

When it comes to music, a musician's ability to play/perform/record/dance/sing doesn't actually matter. It all depends on whether or not you like it.

Example on one hand: I can't listen to 2 bars of Stevie Ray Vaughn without wanting to puke my freakin' guts out, but the man can play fast.

Example on the other hand: The Features' actual musicianship has never been a factor as to why I like them.
I can't grow a beard, and I don't like to party.

Wow, you were right about people on the features message board being harsh... I actually laughed a few times even when people were dissing my band and calling us gay because they say we are a Christian band and thought our lyrics said "Hold Me Lord". ? Anyways, Carigula, I'm assuming you are in Verde... How did your 2NMC show go? Ours was pretty funny. We played after Masa... They were all drunk and broke the kick drum pedal off right before we went up. They also played an entire song without any kickdrum which I'm pretty sure was one of the most awkward things I've ever seen.

Just because I said I know nothing about making music doesn't mean I'm in Verde. biggrin.gif Good guess, though.

I am, however, one of Verde's biggest fans and consider all of them very good friends of mine (and no, I don't just like them because they're good friends of mine-- I didn't know either of the two original members the first time I saw the band and the only current member I've known for more than 5 years joined the band after I fell in love with the music).

But to answer your question, they had one of their best shows at 2NMC (in my humble opinion). If you ask them, though, they might say otherwise.

Carligula's not sexy enough to be in Verde. I can't wait for the new cd to be in my hands. They were the first band we played with; back then it was the Dewese duo and Brian the drummer. They have improved ever since they got that guy playing bass, and continue to be the nicest people in nashville.

Well put Carl.

So, I got the new Mattoid cd at Grimey's on Friday. I'm not exactly sure how to convey the love that I have for this cd. It's completely worth the $11 and tax that I paid for it. I think my favorite song thus far is "Funeral Party", which features some badass guitar by William Tyler. I'm not sure if he's still playing live with them or not, but I hope so. Their cd release party is at the Sutler on Nov. 7, supposedly earlier than the Features show at 12th & Porter. I will be at both. It's party time.

If you haven't seen the Shazam in 5 years, then well, they might have improved in that time period. They toured with Wesley Willis which is pretty cool in my book, and yes, I recognize that "power pop" isn't everyone's bag of tea.

As for Luna Halo, again, recent shows. They've only been together for a little over two years. I know Carey and Nathan (guitarist, guitarist/singer) and word of mouth has them possibly getting signed to the majors in a year.

As for Turtleneck, I know Matt from playing for Cheetah Chrome. Turtleneck is an experience.

Just my .02 cents. People can go on and on about "which bands suck" and which bands don't. I'm of the opinion that anyone who is willing to go up on stage and not act like their shit smells like roses is brave in my book. Not everyone can play guitar. If people say, "They suck" I say, "Okay, then you do better." Not that any of this matters. It's music. It's entirely subjective. Opinions really don't matter. Which is why someone on Pitchfork.media would rate Belle and Sebastian's "Boy with the Arab Strap" a 0.8 out of 10 and give Audioslave's debut album a higher score. Right.

Does the last three months count? They were also on a beer commercial, but that doesn't make me like their music. The Kings of Leon are on tour with the Strokes, should I like/respect their music just because they are touring with the uber-popular Strokes? No, not really.

I shouldn't be such an ass about all of this, but I just don't think they're that good...at all. Sorry.

Gotta agree with RD on this one (about both Kings of Leon AND The Shazam).

So, I got the new Mattoid cd at Grimey's on Friday.
I couldn't place this name until I listened to the tracks- THANK YOU for reminding me!! I saw him play with some folks (but not W. Tyler) at The End. It was a mind-blowing experience. Seems he would've been a more fitting opener for Wesley than The Shazam. Because, you're right, they suck. And I love me some power pop. It just can't be annoying.

I'm so glad I can gab with you about this now. Yes, mind-blowing is the perfect adjective for their Sutler show that I saw in March. Word has it that Ray Davies might now be rotating the "Rat Poison" track on WMTS.

As for proper opening acts...the Mattoid (as he is now being referred to) did a little opener with Poppy Fields (his former accomplice) for the Moldy Peaches at the End in early 2002. It was very suiting.

They toured with Wesley Willis which is pretty cool in my book,
Well, if a homeless man diagnosed with Schizophrenia who likes to head-butt people thought they were good enough to tour with him, they can't be that bad.
And nobody will ever compare to Mr. Willis. I'm sure there are a few angels in music heaven with big knots on their respective foreheads by now.

Is it just me or does Mattoid sound like Bela Lugosi fronting for a surf band? I guess this is more accurate for their live shows. And does anyone know if they have a website yet?

Yeah, that's definitely the live show moreso than the album, in my opinion. I still think they could do a great cover of the Monster Mash. And no, unfortunately, the website is not up yet. I have heard that it's in development though.

It could be worse, at least Cocksuckers isn't on the album. Though, I really wish that it were.

One more song with the word "Party" in it, and it could be an Andrew W.K. album.

Their cd release party is at the Sutler on Nov. 7, supposedly earlier than the Features show at 12th & Porter. I will be at both. It's party time.

Oh, ok, thanks for clearing that up. Is the back-up singer from Friday's show in your band? Or, maybe she's in the Lilacs or something...
