Oh, Superflks, I'm trying to get into Self right now. What do you recommend to start with, preferably that I can listen to online, before I try and pay loads of cash for the albums.

EDIT: Holy crap, they did the jingle for Expedia? I had been listening to Self on TV all along and never knew it.

A few of my favorite songs are:
"Sophmore Jinx"
"Little Exlposion"
"FlipTop Box"
"Glued To The Girl"

I think those songs give you a good idea of what they are all about. I think you can find all of those on selfies. Let me know how it goes!

the second week in march is when it is supposed to be out. you never know...it could change between now and then. i've heard the rough mix of the record and it is quite spectacular.....definitely some of their best work.
We have about 1500 songs.....all of them good!

Been listening to Self and loving a lot of it. My favorites thus far...

"Having Dinner With The Funk"
"Wide Awake At 7"
"See If You Swim"
"Wednesday Again"
"So Low"
"Trunk Fulla Amps"
"Hey, Lou"

All great so far. Oh, and I know Hey Lou was a hidden track on The Features EP...did the Features cover it, or was it just the actual Self song?

good selection of songs, you need to get the cd Subliminal Plastic Motives, great cd, and also Breakfast With The Girls. personally What are you Thinking is a great song. about hey lou, from what I understand, the drummer for Fluid Ounces (I forgot his name) wrote it and both Self and The Features have a version of it. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Well, add that to the list of about 30 CDs (mostly out of print ones) that I want to buy. (And will be able to soon) I'm going to try and get the entire Spongebath catalogue (ambitious! or perhaps naive) sometime, or at least all the CDs by Self, The Features, Fluid Ounces, and whatever other great bands they have...er, had.

I didn't think they were together at all anymore since Seth moved to LA, one joined the French Foreign Legion, one got married & wanted to quit to raise a family and Sam joined Lambchop as their drummer.

A little info for inquiring minds.
Seth moved to LA i believe a year or two ago, which essentially ended the "Tennessee" chapter of Fluid Ounces.
Since moving out there, he's been playing with his old drummer Justin, working on new material, and, for a while, I heard they were playing guitar with John Gates, who (for anyone who remembers) used to play in another band called Rockets Red Glare with none other than....Parrish Yaw. Anyway, I found that interesting. Always a Murfreesboro connection. Not sure if they still play together or not though.
Can't wait to hear some new Ounces stuff.

I thought Kelli Scott of Failure/Blinker The Star was playing drums for Seth, at least on the new CD. Perhaps I was misinformed.

Kelli Scott only played on a demo of Seth's...it was not a long-term collaboration.

And, as far as artist rosters go, I think Spongebath had one of the strongest ones of any "indie" rock label....Self, Fluid Ounces, the Features, Count Bass-D, the Katies, the Roaries, Call Florence Pow, the C-60's...i think a lot of labels would DIE to have an artist roster that diverse.

But what do I know.

Well, I don't know about you, but I really love The Features, Self, and the Fluid Ounces, and I think Spongebath had a damn good roster. Sure, there have been better, definitely, but their's was pretty impressive. It definitely seemed to have been going in the wrong direction in it's final days, though...

The bands and the intentions of the label when it started up weren't the problem. There were some really talented people who worked there at the beginning, and some great bands. Unfortunately, one or two people managed to mismanage the whole shebang into the ground.

no need for me to relax, i'm just catty. and after some time on this message board you'll come to see that my sassiness flows like warm honey.

you're entitled to your opinion, but in my opinion spongebath sucked and the only band i thought was worth my precious time (and more) was the features. i'm also fond of thinking that the only reason it took the features so long to get anywhere is because they had been associated with spongebath. and it's been my experience that people who adored the spongebath scene listened to weak, even horrid bands outside of said label

Self played a show last week for some Dreamworks dudes and dudettes, from what i understand to rate their importance to the label more or less. But the next day it was announced that Universal has been planning to buy out Dreamworks Music division, so we will see what happens with them now. I guess they can only hope for the best, but I'm sure someone is going to get lost in the shuffle, if not completely dropped.

his opening for ben folds was weak, i agree. bad pairing. but i had a good feeling about him for some strange reason. i bought his cd and it was one of the best of 2002, honestly.

his voice is smooth and the album provided some great musicianship (it isnt just him on the recorded versions of the songs). Don't be a hater until you get all the information.

Hate to break the bad news but Universal plans to eliminate Dreamworks' overheard upon purchase. That means that all artists who haven't sold over 100,000 CDs are out, and that includes Self. So really, this is not good news at all, especially since their new album is so close to completion.
