Post 1 of 37
I thought this deserved posting here. From the Self board:

SELF PLAYING EXIT IN/ SEPTEMBER TENTH.
not sure who the other artist will be...
There will be a raffle for one of Mikey's Space Ranger Music VOX guitars
If you want us to autograph it. We will do it at the show.
All of the money from the show and the raffle, will be going to the fund set up for Michael's children.
You will be able to buy tickets for the guitar at the Tribute show on August 19th and SEPT tember 10th so buy as many tickets as you want and enjoy yourself at both shows...
We will announce the winner of the guitar at our show on the 10th.

That is all I can think of to say.. oh yeah raffle tickets will be a dollar.

Thanks to all that plan on coming to the show.
WE are really excited to play again for you.

I'm there, but I don't go with the highest of expectations. I love the music and look forward to hearing it live again, but let's be honest. They lost a killer lead guitarist, and I'm sure they'll have limited practice time since they're bi-coastal. I could be wrong, and I hope it's a great show!

So what are the predictions for the set list? Is it going to be "Self's Greatest Hits" or a bunch of new stuff (perhaps from Ornament & Crime) that most of us haven't heard?
grass stains, airplanes, anything and everything

TF: A mix of the two, I would hope, but I think it'll be more heavy on the old, familiar material. I personally predict "This Is Love" will be in there somewhere, if only because Matt jammed on that riff at the Whole Shebang Fl Oz release show last year. Hey, if he likes playing it...

Well, at the last Nashville Self show (NMC, October 12, 2001, but who's counting, right?) we learned that Matt is not afraid to unload a lot of never-before-heard songs on the audience. So I wouldn't be surprised if they play a lot of the O&C/PM&C material. However, since it is a Mike Mahaffey benefit, I would think that they would play quite a bit of "classic" Self songs, too. Either way, I am PUMPED. I just ordered my ticket today.

Here's another question: what will the lineup be? Technically, I believe Chris James parted ways with Self a couple of years ago. Are Rawlings and Burrus still involved? Will there be a second guitar player?

Chris James did leave the group, as did Mac Burrus. I was told that members of Self are kind of like Batman, waiting to see the signal and ready to go into action when the time comes. Or something like that. I also heard that some other people may be rotating in and out on stage throughout the night.

Well then, if they all come together when it's time for some Self action, then they really haven't left the band, have they? And glad to hear about the rotating set of musicians...that means a lot of special performances! smile.gif

Meaning I'll be extra pissed if I can't get in. Argh.

Anyhow, Self can and has functioned live as a four-piece (when Tim Nobles left the band early on, Mike dropped guitar and simply played bass for a while), and a certain Dancin in the District bootleg on selfies.com (I believe from 1996) evidences that they've very capable of doing it that way if need be.

As for what they might play, I have no idea. As for what I would like them to play:

(You're So) Deadly [a fun one live, I'm sure]
Call Me Back [which they played at the NMC, by the way]
Callgirls [pointless daydreaming as Matt at one point or another said they're never going to play this one live]
Dead Man
Glued to the Girl [looooove that bridge]
Grow Up [predicting this one will be played]
Ilovetoloveyourlovemylove [one of my favorites]
Marathon Shirt [almost guaranteed]
Marry A Model [yeah right, but the Halloween 99 version absolutely smokes the b-side]
Meg Ryan
Miracleworker [always loved it, great energy]
Missed the Friction [the bridge is one of the finest moments in Self's discography]
Placing the Blame [best album closer ever in my opinion, played at the Matt Mahaffey solo acoustic Self show in LA apparently]
Resurrect
Shelf Life
Suzie Q Sailaway
This Is Love
Trunk Fulla Amps [almost a given]
Wednesday Again ["is that what kind of person you are?"]
Wide Awake at 7
With You Somehow

And then, almost anything off of O&C. Hellbent would probably be the most fun to hear live, and then there's Pathetic, Emotional, Coming Over, Can't Go On, Out With a Bang...ah, too much goodness..

But really, anything they play I'm sure is going to be amazing.

Dead Man
I think that Seth Timbs should play drums and that they should do all Fluid Ounces covers.

Would "Dead Man" be appropriate at this show?

I can't think of a dream setlist right now. Maybe later.

I didn't even think about that. Shit, how insensitive... sad.gif

Fl Oz songs played by Self would be pretty interesting...

I could list some songs, but I really honestly don't care what they play. It's been so long. They could play "Heart and Soul" for an hour and I would still love it.

That can be applied to anything. My "to buy" list for music is about four or five times the size of my actual CD collection.

Not a bad list at all. If they bust out with "Funk" as the opener I think I'd just die (and I'd love to see Matt attempt that 30 second scream live...ouch). Although I'd place Wide Awake at 7 right after that, since I've always liked how the two blended together.

Alls I'm saying is when i saw Count Bass D at the Exit/In i was REALLY dissapointed. So if that was a representation of what he is about then there is MUCH better hip-hop out there.

also i hate all tennessee music. including Young Buck (sorry carl).

Yeah, I don't think his shows are all that great. I saw him rap at Seth's piano opening for Fl. Oz. once, and that was cool, but I've never really gotten into his shows.
