TOPIC: Serendipitious CD Finds

Okay, the board is pretty dead today, so I thought I'd start a new thread that I was thinking about the other day...

One of the best feelings I know is discovering a band I've never listened to several years down the road. The most recent example I can think of is the Fastbacks. I remember seeing them a few years back in the Seattle Grunge documentary Hype, and thinking, "Hm, that's a pretty cool sound." I saw their CD in the bargain bin at CD Warehouse a few weeks back and checked it out. Great stuff! Nice, simple, poppy female-fronted band. I'll admit they sound slightly "dated", but it turned out to be a pretty good find.

Okay, that wasn't overly interesting. Does anyone else have any examples of this?

I am actually currently experiencing this with the Jesus and Mary Chain. How did I miss them? I had one of their later albums in high school and sold it because I never listened to it. Now I picked up a CD with some of their earlier stuff and I'm hooked. That's actually the best thing that came out of seeing Lost in Translation for me, hearing their music again.

I love the word serendipity, and the Serendipity ice cream parlor in New York.

And keeping with the randomness to spice up the board discussion, I just had an awesome hour and a half lecture on the cultural significance of the clitoris in the late 19th and early 20th century. Discovering the significance of the clitoris can be a physically serendipitous experience for many, but unfortunately this was just a history lecture.

Hmm... never heard of it. Is this something that should concern me?

Now this is a topic I can talk about! I am really into cheap CDs becuase I am extremely poor and that's about all I can afford. I've found some great stuff in bargain bins around town. The best was the closing of Digital Planet where I bought 20 cds for about 7 bucks. I love a bargain.

Cassettes can also be treasures. I also recently discovered the Jesus and Mary Chain by way of cassette. The best part about tapes- they're only fifty cents!

I've never randomly bought a used CD from a store and it turn out to be the best band I've never heard.

The biggest disappointments:
fIREHOSE
the Pixies
the Breeders
Bikini Kill

I'm sure there are others

Try these on for size:

Redd Kross - Phaseshifter and Show World (Jeff McDonald could double as John Lennon on vocals...for all who love Cheap Trick, T Rex, Big Star...hefty and extremely catchy power pop).

Jellyfish - Spilt Milk (Queen meets the Beach Boys)

Grant Lee Buffalo - Mighty Joe Moon

Gumdrops - High Speed OK? (If the Pixies or Sonic Youth were born in Japan)

There are very few bands or CDs left on my list to buy, and I rarely act on eliminating the list. This band, however, is on that short list.

I don't like to include some of their later albums. So, yes, their first three albums do rule.

Digital Planet closed? I'm out of the loop. What's the story with that?

They opened up a larger store behind Home Depot and closed the one next to Sir Pizza and Stones River.
