If you've never listened to Sloan, do yourself a favor and check 'em out here. You have 7 weeks to embrace the awesomeness that is Sloan before you go and witness the awesomeness of them live at the Exit/In. The new CD Action Pact is a good intro. I also highly recommend Navy Blues and Between the Bridges. Although they're from Canada they make the best Brit Pop today.

If you were turned off by Pretty Togther and/or their last show at 12th and Porter like myslef, give them another chance. The new album is AMAZING! I put it up there with Navy Blues.

Should I buy the double live disk at Hastings for $4? It has been there forever and it just seems like a good deal.

Absolutely! Or just buy it for me biggrin.gif

I may have been a little premature on saying Action Pact was as good as Navy Blues. The single "Rest of My Life" is definitely one of their best songs, however.

Everybody here go and buy Navy Blues right now.

Okay, maybe just pop, but I challenge you to make a distinction between their music and Supergrass' music (goegraphy notwithstanding).

alright smartass. I checked the title while I was replying to the thread and it leaves out the date on the reply page. Just for that, I am not standing next to you at the show. Wait, I will be at the beach. cool.gif

I do love Sloan. Carligula's right on. Navy Blues and Action Pact both Shred, however the 12th and Porter show made me like them more than I already did.....you will want to bring some earplugs. They're freaking loud.

I dunno. I guess I don't really consider Supergrass to be "britpop" either. At least not since their first or second album.

Among other things, singing with a British accent is a requirement.

Well, all four members sing lead on various songs and I believe at least 2 of their voices qualify as "British". Then again, Billie Joe from Green Day sings British, too.

At least we can both agree that they rule and Navy Blues is their best. I can live with that.

brit pop = 60s style pop + 90s style over-production + attitude/hair/arrogance + accents

here are some of my other favorite genre names:
crust, screamo, conscious rap, emocore, skate metal, nerd rock, paisley underground, madchester, protopunk, shoegazer, and my all time fave genre name, pusher post rock.

discuss.

p.s. i recall a sloan show at 12 and p where i stood up front between ms. mindylieu and a glass of red wine...is it possible i know someone else here?

Sounds like Sloan to me, except for the arrogance thing. That's probably one of the most important aspects, isn't it? I stand corrected.

those damn canadians can manipulate their voices in ways americans can't.

i believe i said this on the MB the last time sloan was discussed, but one of the fellas in sloan looks like john cusack. also, i like the song "i am the cancer."

I think the lead guitarist (maybe the john cusack one) also looks like "Wild Thing" Vaughn from Major Leagle.

fantastic show. their principle lead guitarist is amazing. and the song writing is spot on though i think i can say i liked the principle drummer's songs the least.
The halogen lights were also fun. well worth the money and a late sunday night.

Fanfriggintastic show! Everyone who missed out really missed out. I can't remember the last time I was front and center for a show, but I'm sure I won't forget this one.

I will say that the setlist was not nearly diversified enough. Yes, they played a ton of songs off the new album, which is awesome, but we only got one song apiece from Navy Blues and Between the Bridges. WTF!! On top of that, we had to bear through about 3 or 4 from Pretty Together (although IIFGDI as a closer was kickass). I guess it was cool that they played a good amount of DGC material, but I think they skipped over most of their peak era songs. Oh well, it was my third time seeing them, so I can't complain.

I left before the encore and I don't recall any acoustic stuff. That would have been nice though.
