Ha! I checked it. The entire board has 13 posts, 0 of which are in the "Other Bands" section.

i've never heard of them, but the fact that somebody came on here solely to plug their own band makes me 1000 x less likely to give them half a chance...that and their name sounds like some loathesome emo band.
no thanks, mike, i'm good...really.

Any bets on whether or not Mike returns to defend his band, call us out as pretentious hipster assholes, and talk about how he's the godfather of Pelham's kids?

i wonder if he even used his real name. "mike" probably won't be back since he's apparently never been here before. he probably wouldn't defend his band anyway, but go have a quiet sob and write a song about it.

pretentious hipster assholes? i'll take it as a compliment.

I have never heard them, but I hate the name. Hate. I rarely hate things. I doubt I would like them. I'm 99% sure they're from Murfreesboro.
That's so NA.

I like the Cry Room. They are nice people and excellent musicians. They are indeed from Murfreesboro, and there is no one in the band named mike. It is probably just someone who is friends with them. I think the "first post rules" are retarded. Didn't Brian W already rule against them in some other thread?

You're allowed to come here for the express purpose of promoting your band/your friend's band, but it comes off as pretty lame to most of us here.

There are about a dozen local bands I really love and respect. To my knowledge, none of them use this tactic to get their name out there. They book shows, promote those shows, make contacts, record demos/albums, and play really fucking good shows.

I know nothing about playing music/ being in a band, but I've picked up a thing or two about how to "make it" in the business.

i understand that, and like I said, I don't think this is a member of the band, just a fan or friend, so you can't blame the band for that. Plus, he probably is a fan of the Features as well. Otherwise, he probably would not have come here. I'm sure people here have promoted the Features on other message boards. It's just something that fans of music do--they try to spread the word. Sorry, but i'm just sick of all the bitching and complaining. It really does scare a lot of people away.

I see your point, man-- especially about the actions of a fan not reflecting on the band. I try to only post with love for my fellow Features fans here (even when I'm telling Ceeze how much I hate him, calling MissSeptember a dirty whore or Keith a filthy Jew), but I still don't like it when this happens. And I don't think I'm alone on this. If others are spreading the word of the Features-- I'm all for it-- as long as it's done in a thoughtful way. I think it's universally important to establish oneself as a genuine fan on the messageboard of a band's website before one goes on to use it as free advertising for his or her band/label.

By the way, it doesn't take a fan to recognize the sheer number of people who come here (most of whom are probably afraid to post) and the potential for generating lots of publicity for a band. I never make that assumption.

i wouldn't doubt that "mike" IS a member of the band, but just didn't use his real name. i see little reason to give him the benefit of the doubt, considering there was no explanation given, just a plug. even if it wasn't a member of the band, obviously it had to be someone closely associated with them...and it would not have been irritating if the person was someone who had been here before, atleast once, or if they had simply explained themselves, said hello, and been nice about it. i mean, c'mon, man, they logged in with a somewhat generic sort of name (no offence intended, mikes of the world) and all they wrote was the band name and a weblink. i'm sorry, but i think i'll stand by my opinion here--it's off-putting and i'm not going to follow the link...not if it was the last link on the internet! by the way, it's not the end of the world, it's just a mild annoyance. to have given it this much discussion is ridiculous, and says much about how shiftless and dull my friday has been.

Ok my take:

I am absolutely sure the Cry Room are very nice guys and fantastic musicians. Therefore I will keep my criticisms constructive.

First, I am glad Craig pointed out that "mike" may not be a member of the band but rather a fan. If the latter is the case I can forgive the band...its just another 19 year old MTSU RIM fan boy getting a little overzealous about his favorite band. (I know the type...I was one). If the former is the case then they just made a major faux pas. They should know the unspoken rules of indie rock self-promotion.

Next, my "must resist temptation" remark was in reference to how easy it would be to make a mean spirited crack about how bad that band name is. I held off because i'm in bands, and i want to follow the golden rule, and I can always hear my mother's voice saying "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." But now that others have broken the ice, i'll say a few things.

Guys: please get a new name. I say this in all seriousness and i am not trying to be mean. I say this as someone who wants to see this music scene succeed...as someone who cares about the bands from this area.
I am honestly not exaggerating when I say that "The Cry Room" may possibly be one of the two or three worst band names I have ever heard in my life. It is the kind of name that I would bring up to my friends when we are having a good laugh making up really bad band names. I mean you just don't get any more heavy handed, overwrought, or immature than something like that.

You could argue that I/We should be discussing the music and not something as trivial as the band's name. (I did listen to a few of the mp3's by the way). Afterall I like lots of bands with bad names. But I think in this case the name of the band is a symbol of just how ridiculous the "emo" genre has gotten. Have fans/bands of this genre really gotten so caught up in their own self pity that they've lost all ability differentiate overwrought emotion from an honest, CREATIVE message?

I'll go ahead and apologize to The Cry Room because, to be fair, my criticisms arive more or less out of my frustration with the "emo" genre, and not necessarily entirely from their name.

These are always my favorites. Some poor fool thinks he sees a safe practical way of free promotion (especially as the features are paddling into the crest of a giant wave). He doesn't realize how uncouth coattail riding really is. He comes back with high hopes of feedback, and someone (like carl or sina or even supermoose) has laid the " your band f'ing sucks" trap. His heroism steps in aided by his contempt for pretentious hipster a-holes, and he goes to work in defense of his belief that his opinion might matter. He has no idea what thunder he's called down on his head, poor kid.

These MB members are some of the sharpest wits I've come across, either that or just plain shitty* hillarious.
