TOPIC: Top 10 Albums of 2005!
Posted  Friday, December 9, 2005 at 12:18 PM
Post 1 of 42
Has this thread been started yet? I know it's a bit early, but I always get excited to see what you guys have pegged as your favorites of the year...

Here are mine, in no particular order:

10 Death Cab - Plans
09 Iron and Wine + Calexico - In The Reins
08 Eisley - Room Noises
07 De Novo Dahl - Cats & Kittens
06 Kanye West - Late Registration
05 Fiona Apple - Extraordinary Machine
04 Super Furry Animals - Love Kraft
03 Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - S/T
02 Kate Bush - Aerial
01 Sufjan Stevens - Illinois

I was pretty excited about the Le Tigre remixes, Live Wilco, Nina Simone, and both Tragically Hip albums too. This was a fairly decent year for new releases, imo. (I'm looking forward to the Long Winters '06 full-length too...)

Your turn.

10. Franz Ferdinand - You Could Have It So Much Better
9. De Novo Dahl - Cats & Kittens
8. The Go! Team - Thunder, Lightning, Strike
7. Coldplay - X&Y
6. Abandoned Pools - Armed To The Teeth
5. Nickel Creek - Why Should The Fire Die?
4. Eels - Blinking Lights and Other Revelations
3. Andrew Bird - ...Mysterious Production of Eggs
2. Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
1. Kayne West - Late Registration

I would put Porno, Mint and Grime by Self somewhere up there though i dont really know what to consider the official release date.

Also great was Phoneix-United, Brazillian Girls, The Ponys, The Redwalls-De Nova, Robbie Fulks-Georgia Hard, Sigur Ros-Takk

Anyone have any choices by the biggest musical dissapointment of the year?

2). Weezer's Make Believe sucking (sorta to be expected)
3). No new releases from Kings Of Leon or the Features...teehee

I was actually kind of disappointed with the new Of Montreal album, myself. It had some okay songs on it, but I had to work way too hard to get into it.

(Good call on the Coldplay X&Y, how did I forget that when it's practically all I listened to for like 3 months?)

"Sunlandic Twins" was pretty uneven. It would have been better if it had been an 8 song EP....thing...but those 8 are really, really good. "The Party's Crashing Us"? "Requiem for OMM2"? Genius.

I'd say my biggest dissapointment was the Coldplay album. "Talk" is, definitely, the best Coldplay song ever, but the rest was average or just above average. I was satisfied with the slight progression between "Parachutes" and "Rush of Blood," but "X & Y" just seems like a complete retread, safe. Good, but safe.

Of course, I knew. That was obvious. What's not so obvious is why you felt the need to state it. Did you think that if you said that everyone would suddenly notice? "Oh my god! He didn't really think it was a joke after all. That bastard!" I'm struggling here to see what point your underdeveloped mind could possibly have been attempting to make with that post.

For quite a few years now, I haven't even bought 10 albums that were released in that year (there's over a hundred years worth of recorded music to choose from, you know!). Some good things from this year have been the Coldplay album and the Beck album. The Gorillaz album was really good, but not as good as the first one. I may have bought one or two other things that I can't think of right now. Probably the best one I heard this year was the De Novo Dahl album, but did it come out this year? It seems like so long ago. Really, the Cats part of that album is in my top 20 of all time. Yep. Rest in peace, DND. No offense to present company, but it will never be the same. They had something really special.
Relevant: Prince, PT Anderson, Punk, Post-Punk, Purple, Party of Five, Peter Swanson, Peter Gabriel-led Genesis, "Peter Panic", Paul's Boutique, Potential Energy, Every Features MB member but me.

How is it that no one has mentioned the Kaiser Chiefs "Employment"? Great Album.

Also at the top of my list would have to be The Real Heroes "Greetings From Russia", as well as others already mentioned such as Guero & Get Behind Me Satan.

I may have made my list too hastily. I've been listening to Ryan Adams and the Cardinals' Jacksonville City Nights a lot lately and I like it a lot more than I expected to like it.

I should have also included The Clutters-- T&C and Jetpack-- The Art of Building a Moat on the Local list as well as Foo Fighters-- In Your Honour on the Biggest Dissappointments list.

well even though make believe was going to suck anyway, i think the levels of sucking were so suckable that it still came as a shock to me.
the only enjoyable part of that record is in "we are all on drugs" when rivers goes, "give it to me"

and, hello. biggest dissappointment - white stripes, get behind me satan.

i liked it. there's about 2 tracks on there that i skip everytime, but other than that i think it's an enjoyable listen. i love what the white stripes do, but i was kind of ready for a change in pace. mixing things up, adding other instruments. denial twist, forever for her (is over for me). all fine by me. i don't like it as much as the other albums, but i still listen to it quite a bit.

in other news, the more i hear of aerial pink's haunted grafitti, the more likely it is that it, too, will be included in my "best of '05" list when i finally get a copy.

Fiona Apple - Extraordinary Machine
Paul McCartney - Chaos and Creation in the Backyard
Of Montreal - The Sunlandic Twins
Fiery Furnaces - EP

I only have four, and I contemplated whether or not to put the fourth on here. I never buy new records, but when I do, they're monumental.
