TOPIC: Weezer - "Make Believe"

Has anyone else heard the leak? I'm only on track 8 so far, but oh god...it's such a fantastic album. If it keeps up like this, it definitely blows away all of their other albums in my book, no question about it (I've never been a real fan of Weezer albums though, I tend to think their b-sides are better). "Perfect Situation" alone just takes all the ideas from Maladroit, Blue, Green, and Pinkerton, and ties it all together. It all makes sense now. I feel bad for ever doubting them.

And yes, I do think that "Beverly Hills" sucks.

P.S. "My Best Friend" sounds kinda Featuresy to me. biggrin.gif

I haven't heard anything except "Beverly Hills" yet. I think that was definitely made to be a radio single for 14 year olds to enjoy.

Apparently they've been trying really hard to make this album a huge apology for the last few years.

They covered "Unbreak my Heart" by Toni Braxton, but I don't think it made the album, did it?

From what I read in a magazine a couple weeks ago, it did.

The sad thing is that they probably could have easily worked that into the second half of the green album and I wouldn't have noticed.

i'm really surprised to hear this... honestly, i had "Make Believe" pegged to be the nail in the coffin for Weezer, especially for the schlocky-ness of "Beverly Hills".

i still probably won't buy it, though.

I have yet to hear it, but after hearing a 30 second clip of "We're all on drugs", I'm fairly less enthused.

Tracks 2-5 are the true heart of the album. I've already said why I like "Perfect Situation," "This Is Such a Pity" is probably the most respectable (and just plain good) 80s throwback song to date, "Hold Me" features probably the most explosive Weezer chorus ever (and is strikingly beautiful in its starkness and simplicity), and the riff on "Peace" is just great. "We Are All On Drugs" is a bit of a momentum killer (although the "Give it to me!" chorus is kinda cool, and slays anything off Maladroit or Green), but "The Damage In Your Heart" picks things up nicely (a nice reminder of Pinkerton).

It should also be noted that Rivers' voice is in the best condition ever (maybe I should try meditation), the solos are by far the best of any Weezer offering, and the regular inclusion of pianos and synths makes me wonder why the never ventured there before (taking this time to acknowledge "Across the Sea" before someone calls me out). If you don't like this album, you don't like anything Weezer's ever done.

I've listened to it twice now (although I admit it's been background music while I did other stuff [spare the masturbation joke, Carl]), and it hasn't made my ears bleed or anything, but nothing has stood out as being particularly good. Maybe my opinion will change after a couple more listens.
I TOTALLY AGREE!

Keith, you are destined to rock. Never forget this.

Seems like everyone has something different to say/praise/complain about for the record, but I think MB's guitarwork routinely scorches that of any Weezer album; solos included.

I can't say I'm a fan of it. This might be the burning point of Weezer for me.

I agree (although not so much with track 5). "Perfect Situation" and "Such a Pity" have that sincerity that seemed to be lacking in the last two albums. That's what bothered me the most about them was that they just seemed to be uninspired and formulaic. "Hold Me" has a great build-up and equally great pay-off that, in my opinion, puts it right up there with "Only in Dreams". I think it would have been the perfect album closer, but I guess they prefer to end their album with filler these days.

"Drugs" is pretty much crap, but "Damage" is another one of those rare sincere songs. At this point, I think "Pardon Me" is a bit redundant, but alright. In keeping with recent tradition, the rest kind of trails off after that.

I actually love "The Other Way." The way the vocals come in with the acoustic guitar's just great...and "My Best Friend" really does remind of the Features, specifically just at the end of the chorus.

Also, no love for "Peace"? That's gotta be one of my favorites...

I'm listening to it for the first time now and this album is making me like "Maladroit" even more. "Maladroit" had so many standout tracks in retrospect. Maybe it's because I had listened to early concert recordings of "Dope Nose," "Keep Fishing," "American Gigolo," and "December" for the previous year (the old version of "American Gigolo" still destroys the Maladroit version). "Beverly Hills" is the only thing that has really stood out mainly because of it's creepy Garth-impersonating-Foxy-Lady beat. The rest of it is just eh.

The lyrics are horrible. I really have to acknowledge this. How has Rivers gone from "El Scorcho" to "We Are All On Drugs"? Really? The lyrics are so drastically less intelligent and clever on "Drugs" that it seems like two different authors. "I just made love to your wallet photograph/1000 times in my head?" I miss the cleverness!

"Make Believe" sounds like a mediocre MTSU rock band that would open for the Features back in the Boro days.

I dunno...2004 was a great year for music ("Satanic Panic," "Tyrannosaurus Hives," "Exhibit A"). This year isn't off to a great start ("Sunlandic Twins" is just okay and "Make Believe" is not inspiring).

At least the new Oasis single, "Lyla," is really good and really promising.

I've listened to the album a good 10 times now, and I still can't get into it. I actually kinda like the drugs song (at least it has a hook), but the best songs on this album are simply ok. Maladroit had some turds, but there are a couple songs on there I liked quite a bit. I never owned The Green Album or listened to it much, so not includung Green, Make Believe is officially my least favorite Weezer album.

All of the songs seem a little more longwinded than the last albums.
