I read about that this morning...and while it's sad, it's not like we could ever listen to him on the radio. I only know who he is because of the various live recordings, but we weren't able to tune into him every week like people in the UK can. I guess I can equate it to Dick Clark dying, except that would make a lot of people happy (myself included).
That's so NA.

Come now, this much hatred for Dick Clark that you'd be happy he died?

Maybe not happiness...but probably much relief. I hate that guy.

I do see your point, but that's changed with the internet over the last few years.

Reading tributes on another messageboard, I was stunned at how the news had saddened people not just in Britain, but Europe, North America... my friend said he felt like he'd lost a family member. I'm really cut up. I didn't listen to him every night (not with all that techno wink.gif) but his death will have a significant impact on the music scene in Britain, for bands all over the world. Anyone in a band will tell you that doing a Peel session was one of their main goals.

Gah, I just don't feel I can even do him justice. I'm just listening again to the tribute show that was broadcast last night (all Peel sessions). Joy Division, The Damned, Laura Cantrell, Jimi Hendrix, The Delgados, Pulp, and that's just in the first half an hour.

I've known the news for 24hours now, and the emptiness hasn't left me one bit.

RIP John, you will be missed. sad.gif

well said. though i've never heard john peel on the radio (and if i could've heard him on the internet, i was certainly unaware of it), i have long recognized his indelible influence on the music that i've been listening to for half of my life...the man was so passionate about good music, and for that he will forever be missed.

Andrew- BBC radio is a pretty refreshing change from the usual hum drum radio (local) I get in my car. So when I'm at work I usually listen to BBC as they're likely to cover acts that are within my personal tastes. My favorite Peel show was the Belle & Sebastian (big surprise) Christmas show they did a couple years back. Hearing them do Santa Bring My Baby Back (to Me), Santa Claus Goes Straight to the Ghetto and the 12 Days of Christmas (among loads of others) is something I treasure and am certain to torture those I share holidays with for many years to come.

Check out all the BBC Radios and enjoy:

I, too, find BBC radio a refreshing break from the tripe that is usually on the radio here. I tune in often. Good stuff.
