How sad is this?

"Quote"
BEVERLY HILLS, California (AP) -- Ray Charles, the Grammy-winning crooner who blended gospel and blues in such crowd-pleasers as "What'd I Say" and heartfelt ballads like "Georgia on My Mind," died Thursday, a spokesman said. He was 73. Charles died at his Beverly Hills home surrounded by family and friends, said spokesman Jerry Digney.

Charles' last public appearance was alongside Clint Eastwood on April 30, when the city of Los Angeles designated the singer's studios, built 40 years ago in central Los Angeles, as a historic landmark.

Blind by age 7 and an orphan at 15, Charles spent his life shattering any notion of musical boundaries and defying easy definition. A gifted pianist and saxophonist, he dabbled in country, jazz, big band and blues, and put his stamp on it all with a deep, warm voice roughened by heartbreak from a hardscrabble childhood in the segregated South.

"His sound was stunning -- it was the blues, it was R&B, it was gospel, it was swing -- it was all the stuff I was listening to before that but rolled into one amazing, soulful thing," singer Van Morrison told Rolling Stone magazine in April.

Charles won nine of his 12 Grammy Awards between 1960 and 1966, including the best R&B recording three consecutive years ("Hit the Road Jack," "I Can't Stop Loving You" and "Busted").

His versions of other songs are also well known, including "Makin' Whoopee" and a stirring "America the Beautiful." Hoagy Carmichael and Stuart Gorrell wrote "Georgia on My Mind" in 1931 but it didn't become Georgia's official state song until 1979, long after Charles turned it into an American standard.
We'll miss you Mr. Hooper.

My favorite memory of Ray Charles is of him in The Blues Brothers. I will also always remember him in the California Raisins commercials.

So Ray Charles gets a memorial thread and Ronald Reagan does not. I'm not saying that I approve or disapprove; I just find it interesting. I've made a note of it.

I love it in Blues Brothers when he shoots the kid in the music store. Best laugh in a film with many great laughs. I actually was in my room and heard my roomates laughing today, went to see what it was, and it had been that part, and I'd missed it. Alas.

I also noted the Charles but not Reagan memorial. I'm glad nothing was said, because it likely would have turned into a celebration, and while I'm not a big fan of his, I've been insulted this week by just how many people seem to get such pleasure in a man's death.

You may like grandma's yard gnomes, but I've seen Rock City. Remember it.

Oh I don't know. I'm not saying there should have been mention of it. I've personally had my fill of Reagan discussion from every single channel on TV. It just seems like any time any semblance of a celebrity dies, someone here has something to say about it. I mean, Tony Randall had a memorial thread, for goodness sake. And I just found it intersting that in this case, no one did. I could have started a thread if I'd really wanted to.

I think the fact that Reagan remained above ground for so long for countless memorials and hours of redundant news coverage was enough for me.
We'll miss you Mr. Hooper.

that and the fact that I've heard that damn joke about Desmond Tutu being "so-so" so many times in the last few days. And it wasn't funny the first time.

I thought it was funny enough the first time. However, when our unwanted roommate told it I wasn't thrilled - especially when he referred to desmond tutu as "some Chinese dude or something..." rolleyes.gif
