HOLY SHIT I AM NEVER MISSING A SHOW AGAIN. Seriously, I had so much fun. I was stranded downtown in the cold rain for two hours and you know what? I didn't even care because I was in such a good mood from the show. I dont have a set list or anything I just had to express how freakin HAPPY and IN LOVE I am now. Okay, I'm a loser too: I walked backstage and like waved to them and made them take pictures with me when they were leaving. They all looked at me like I was psycho but i DONT CARE. Okay this isn't normal so I am gonna stop now. Carl, I saw you and I think that I saw Stephanie and TF. Did anyone see me? Red shirt, polka dot skirt...?

I saw you Rachel, I was standing a person or two to the left of you. However, I don't talk to people even if I do recognize them, so don't feel bad. I barely talked to Stephanie, and I know her pretty well.

Yeah, I saw you. We made eye contact a couple times but I still wasn't sure if you were actually a board member recognizing me or not. I'm a little disappointed that I didn't get to meet anyone tonite.

Thursday

What a fun night. The weather was great. When I got there, I was kind of drunk, but as I sobered up, I really enjoyed myself. I enjoyed wandering around the campus, reminiscing. I enjoyed seeing so many friends, and so many of you wonderful people that I only see at Features shows. Speaking of the Features, they played very well, and I think that they easily got the best crowd reaction of the night, even better than Spoon. Speaking of Spoon, they were pretty good, too. But if they don't turn it up a couple of notches, they will have a hard time following the Features in Lexington next Thursday. Till next time...

Oh, and sorry we didn't get a chance to meet you, Rachel. I didn't hear about the red polka dots until it was too late.

I got to the show only moments before it began. However, there were still a couple of front row spots on the right end of the stage, which my friends and I promptly claimed. The show was very good, as always. I got to meet Roadie and I spied BrianW and someone I assume to be a manager or something at Tower Records later in the evening. The Features and shawarmas from Meditteranean Cuisine in one night...geez!

Tonite was just great all around. I have to say that I really enjoyed seeing the Northern Lights again, and both the Glands and Spoon were very good (I will have to buy some Spoon CDs now). On to the main attraction, the Features were at their most energetic tonite. I haven't seen Matt jump around that much since the September Boro show. Great! Rollum's reaction when they shot all that smoke at him was hilarious. Matt's kicking the crap out of his pedal when his guitar messed up again (during Buffalo Head I think) was great too. "That's The Way It's Meant To Be" was especially on tonite; the best I had ever heard it.

It was nice having a mini-chat with Stephanie and finally being introduced to YDDD. Also glad to talk to JamieCarroll again. I saw some girls getting their picture taken with Matt backstage, right before Spoon went on. I guess that was you Rachel? If I had known you were there I would have said hi. It's great that you got to see them again finally. Here's hoping they play DiTD again. After tonite, I have to say that outside Features' shows need to become a regular spring/summer occurence.

I thought this show was terrific. Perfect weather (until right after the Features! Fate!), great sound, and a delightful atmosphere. I really liked the whole tent thing. Even though there was a pretty good-sized crowd, there was plenty of room to dance and move around. I thought the Features played very well, and I gained more appreciation for "That's the Way It's Meant To Be." Fun tune.

Rachel, I was pretty sure that was you behind me. (I think my purse and your jacket/umbrella were in the same heap.) Now I wish I would have told everyone around (TF, Stephanie, YDDD, JC, Mike D), so that we could have said hello. Sorry, but glad you had fun anyway. You'll have to post some of your pictures so we can better identify you.

If I were to give tonight's show a title, it would be

ROLLUM IN THE BONG

I had a whole lotta fun last night. I thought the setting was nice and open. I didn't feel crammed in there. The Features also had a big venue sound on that stage, and I like that, too. Matt was going nuts. I was hoping for some amp-kicking or some flips or somersaults. No such luck, I guess.

Good to meet Digsy. I had a feeling that was you since Blue Sky Court, and my suspicion was confirmed tonight.

The Features were wonderful last night. They always are; they always will be. I think they are gaining such a huge fan base and everyone that I know who came to the show loved them. Matt said he doesn't like playing outdoors but that the tent helped, but I thought they still sounded really good. I got there about 20 minutes before they played, and then after they played some of us went to Tower Records because honestly, we thought Crooked Fingers were not very good. Rollum told me that they, "reminded him of a cross between Bruce Springsteen and Neil Diamond, if they were both really sick," or something like that. The Features should've gone after them. Then I came back for Spoon, and fully intent on liking them (because I like their record), I just couldn't get into it. I thought that it was boring, I mean all the songs have the same exact beat and the beginnings of all the songs are somewhat promising, but then it's like they flat-line and then just die. I just wasn't impressed at all. I think the Features should've gone after them, too. I kind of wish I would've left right after the Features, it would've made for a pretty exciting (and less wet and cold) night. wink.gif

Yes, I'm glad that this is what YDDD and I did.

I think the Features should use a fog machine at all of their shows. It made look like a real live rock show... just like the time Jason Bateman made a band from skeletons in the science lab at his school in the ill-fated television sitcom It's Your Move.

I've decided that I like outdoor Features shows better than ones that are inside. The weather, the soft grass under my feet, and the fresh air made a much more enjoyable environment. Although the set was shorter than what we're used to, it was a very pleasant evening. When they started playing "Leave It All Behind," I was able to pretend for a moment that they were starting "Stick Together."

I hate to admit it, but I thought the highlight of the night was the "on the spot" interview between the show's emcee and two Features fans (who shall remain nameless). That was quite funny. Seriously, though, guys, you need to find more loyal friends. As soon as the pressure was on, they all came to hide behind me.

Rachel, you little punk! You should've come talk to me. I promise I don't bite unless I'm really, really mad. Besides, you're not a real Features fan until you've walked up to someone at a show and said, "Hey, are you [insert bizarre message board name here]?" and gotten a really weird look from them. Sorry I missed you. If you have a chance, please post your pictures of the band. I'd like to see them.

Speaking of pictures, there were more people with cameras there than I've ever seen at a show. Hopefully most of them will surface on the Internet soon. (This includes you, smee II).

I totally forgot to mention the crazy MC guy. Whenever a man with short shorts and absolutely no leg hair in a button-up tie-dyed shirt thrusts a microphone in your face, you know it's going to end badly. He just oozed the "my dad as a failed stand-up comic" vibe and totally dissed on MTSU. If anyone heard the exchange...

"And what's your name?"
"Uh........Brett....."
"And you don't claim this guy (Ray Davies) as your friend?"
"Uh.......no....."

...that was me. And TF, I can't hate on my amigos for totally bailing on us since I would have likely done the same. Geez...

I thought that the features destroyed spoon last night. they most definitely got the best crowd reaction of the night. as soon as "thursday" ended, i saw the guy running the soundboard exclaim "jesus christ" to the crowd reaction that the features got. i even heard that the soundman told the features that they could play for another twenty minutes if they wanted too, but they declined.

i feel like i'm watching my own generation's version of the beatles or the kinks when i'm watching the features. i am just so very happy to be able to catch this amazing band in their prime.

Last night's show was good stuff. The sound was great, and I like the outdoor environment, too. The show was energy packed, and I was sorry that I couldn't rock out as hard as usual. (I just wasn't feeling that well physically...that's all.) I have to second that statement that Matt's energy was on high last night; I love seeing him rock out like that.
I always get a kick out of seeing the messageboard people; that never fails. So, I'm glad that I got to talk to the people that I did (smee II, iwantelvis, havesomesoma, digsy, yddd, token, jc, brianw, and of course sina), and I am sorry that I didn't get to talk to the others of you that were there, TF told me he saw some of you guys that I just didn't spot with my glasses on. My vision is a little worse with them on, and I didn't recognize it until last night.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the MC guy. Lord...He was a tool. I found the stand-up routine especially annoying. If the jokes were funny, then that would be a little more tolerable. And, he was cracking on all the schools around here. I actually told HSS that if he was interviewing me, he would have asked about my school, and I would have said ETSU. Then, he would have to ask me where that is, and I would just say, "It's like MTSU but East, dipshit." I wonder if that would have made it to the radio.

i was very uncomfortable during the whole "interview/adam dread makes me look like a jackass" thing. i couldnt understand anything that he said, and i just wanted him to shut up and let the features play.

when adam dread yelled "and on what station can you hear great music like the features?", i screamed "WMTS".......(sorry to everyone affiliated with WRVU for that comment.....i just couldnt help myself since i am the main features supporter at the station, but i must say that your benefit kicked the shit out of every WMTS benefit combined.)

Well this was a great night. One of the best concerts that I have ever been to in awhile. Did anyone see Notes from the Underground? We were a little late gettting there and missed them. The Northern Lights were awesome and I am in love with the new songs and bassist (apparently Self affiliated). More people should give those guys a chance, they do not dissappoint. The Glands were very enjoyable. They are one of my sister's favorite bands and she was very jealous that I saw them. I was much less impressed with Crooked Fingers. I agree with Rollum on the Neil Diamond thing. I really enjoyed Spoon but I was just kinda tired and cold at that point and couldn't give it my full attention. I'm pretty sure that I was standing by Mike D during their set, but wasn't completely sure. I was the girl in the huge blue jacket, too shy to say hello.

Now The Features. What can you say? They never dissappoint. The weather and the pleasant atmosphere made the show extra nice. The crowd was great. Everyone had their space and I wasn't annoyed once. I enjoyed the set, but was also surprised with See You Thru being left out. This better not happen again! It was nice to see everyone. I really never talk to anyone ,but thanks to TF for giving me cover from the scary MC. You were right, I really am not a loyal friend. To tell the truth I hate Ray and Digsy! mad.gif

What's funny is that I used to really like Adam Dread when he was on Thunder 94. I used to listen to Man of Leisure Mornings every day before school. And I even kind of liked his column in In Review.

But if last night was what Adam Dread has become, please count me out. Did ya'll know that he's a Metro Councilman now? And to think, I voted for him.

darn straight. when a situation leaves you with a choice of supporting your friends or avoiding a situation prone to be awkward and embarrassing...well, let's just say the choice was clear to me.
the "funny man" was hilarious, though probably not in the way he would've liked. some of my favorite jokes included: "i guess now we solved the mystery of the missing acid from the chemistry department" and "we were both members of the same fraternity: delta gramma coka."
it was nice to be able to put some messageboard faces with names tonight. stephaniew was kind enough to point out tf, yddd, and jamiecarroll to me (though i'm not sure that all of you knew who i was, i was the one standing beside digsy).
and the show...amazing. i thought that that was an extremely solid features set. very good choice for an audience of which the greater part where probably unfamiliar with them. i'm sure they won many may fans last night. i was sorry i didn't get to stay to see spoon...after days of sleeplessness i feared falling asleep on the drive home if i had stayed much longer. i'm glad everyone who went seemed to have fun...i know i sure did.
and i will try to post scans of the pictures i took when i get them developed.

No, Ray, tell us how you really feel.

I was pleasantly surprised by how great the boys sounded last night. They can pull off the large, outdoor show like very few other bands. The energy was really high last night and I'll agree that the best demonstration of this was how "on" TTWIMTB was. Seeing the crowd react to such a new song is proof that The Features are going stronger than ever. I'll echo the other sentiments regarding Spoon. I really was entertained, but my buddy Mike and I were noticing that so many of their songs stop just as they're getting good. I was way too distracted by the Neil Diamond vocals to really get into Crooked Fingers. I just kept hoping we were gonna get some "Love on the Rocks" or something. The Glands were also pretty good, but nothing to write home about.

Despite my lukewarm feelings on most of the acts, I think WRVU did a great job of putting together a quality show. This is proof that it's sometimes possible for Vandy to do something right. Speaking of which, did you hear that SR-71 and Nappy Roots are headling this years Rites of Spring?

Rachel, I'm sorry I didn't talk to you. I'm pretty sure I spotted you standing towards the right side of the stage, but for some reason I was thinking you said polka-dotted shirt, and not skirt.

I also probably would have talked to the front wall of elitists, but I'm more prone to wandering the outskirts of the crowd between sets. Speaking of which, BrianW, where were you? I didn't see you all night?

Ceeze, I think I may have been standing directly beside you during the show. Do you have big black hair and were you convulsing for most of the show just to the right and behind Sina's posse?

Speaking of Sina, did y'all hear that she got booted right before Spoon? How you get booted from a free, outdoor show escapes me. Leave it to Sina. (Hey that would be a good name for a sit-com).

So, any idea when we'll get to see the Features in Middle Tennessee again? Soon, I hope.

I get the impression that Sina only hangs out with dark-haired people smile.gif But, I believe you're talking about Mary (she posted once or twice in regards to the last Red Rose show). She happens to be super-cool as well.

We all hung out after the last 12th and Porter show. She had a bad night, though, as she accidentaly filled her purse with water, broke her finger in my car door, and was escorted to the emergency room by the police after they pulled her over for trying to drive back to the Boro with a broken finger. She assured me last night that she's feeling much better.

Ceeze, I think I may have been standing directly beside you during the show.  Do you have big black hair and were you convulsing for most of the show just to the right and behind Sina's posse?
Sounds like a dead-ringer for me, aside from the fact that I was no where near the location that you described.
Yeah, I could see you doing that more than Ceeze. I've never known him to be the convulsing type.
Digsy is right, I'm not the convulsing type. I take more of an analytical point of view to shows then a "rocking out" one. I usually remain fairly still with my arms crossed in order to give the aural onslaught a stationary target to hit. I occasionally bob my head, or shake my hair around for the amusement of a board member that will go unnamed. My hair is neither black, nor big. Its brown and kind of shaggy. I was wearing my green "Dedman for County Executive" shirt, and standing behind JC during the Features set.

Bowl of Fire: I love Houston's. It's grown to be one of my favorite restaurants.

About Sina - I think she spilled rum'n'Coke on a roadie/sound engineer and maybe also on some of Spoon's gear. I love you, Sina.

Carligula- The guy you were standing beside sounds like Preston. He is actually the guy who introduced me to The Features a year ago, and he was right behind and to the right of Sina's posse. He does convulse for most of the show; he is definitely the rocking out type. Plus, he has pretty big, dark hair now. I'm almost positive it was him. So, mystery solved!

Speaking of Sina, did y'all hear that she got booted right before Spoon? How you get booted from a free, outdoor show escapes me. Leave it to Sina. (Hey that would be a good name for a sit-com).
let's talk about...how i left the show cause i wasn't feeling good..(right before spoon)....and i had told kim to take sina home...and that was all fine and shit.

i get in my car, realize that sina had left a TON of shit in there...so i figure i'll drop the stuff off at her place before i wnt home (i have a key)...
so i walk in sina's apartment...and she's already THERE....like sticking like almost a whole chicken in the microwave. TRASHED AS HELL...

i have no clue how she got home...hell id din't even know that she got booted...
but i'm with carligula...how the HELL do you get kicked out of outside?

i also got busted with a pair of glasses on that SINA stole from somebody...and the dude thought I Stole them from him...lol

I personally never listened to much Archers of Loaf, but I've been told they were much different. It's probably like someone saying "How can you not like Mr. Bungle if you liked Faith No More?" (for the record I like both a lot-- maybe Fantomas would be a better example) I don't think sounding like Neil Diamond is necessarily a bad thing. In fact, I happen to love his music and when I'm drunk enough to do kareokee, chances are you're gonna hear a Neil song. I just found it distracting. Plus, it didn't seem like an appropriate band for the venue. I'll bet I would have dug it a lot more at the Slow Bar or something. The music did seem pretty genuine, though, and I can definitely appreciate that.

And to think, I voted for him.
i was more excited when fred buck of lightning 100 came out and introduced the lone official. i really like the "retro lightning" show that he hosts on saturday mornings.....when i worked at a furniture factory, i used to listen to it all the time.

Unfortunately several features songs are less than 3 minutes, so they can play a lot of stuff in a short period of time. I hope the new album isn't painfully short like Weezer's green album...

the only album i have, and have heard, is the green album. therefore i have no basis of opinion about how it compares with the others. i wasn't necessarily saying that it was so great that i was pissed because of it's brevity. more like i was disappointed to buy a "full length" album that wasn't much more than an EP.

I wouldn't say that the green album has no value. Sure, if you are going for deep lyrics and complicated music then green album has no value. But for just a good solid pop album that features some very, very catchy hooks, it's great. "Photograph" is one of the best Weezer songs in my opinion. And I still love "Hash Pipe."

I also probably would have talked to the front wall of elitists, but I'm more prone to wandering the outskirts of the crowd between sets.  Speaking of which, BrianW, where were you?  I didn't see you all night?
Carl, I was indeed there but I stayed in the back and moved around sparingly. I had just concluded a hellish week of editing TOO much country-related material and I didn't feel like videotaping the show (yet I still had my camera with me, I guess I was going through the motions). I think I spotted you moving through the crowd but for some reason I didn't feel like moving over to you. I might have been chatting with someone (maybe Jeremy and Stephanie? Can't remember).

Richard,

You spied the Daigle at Tower Records that night. Sometimes he's kind to me and buys me things like videotape, but only from Tower Records. I'm sure that's on a page somewhere in the book.

in response to the weezer debate......... in my own small opinion weezer will never be able to make another album as good as pinkerton. it is the most unrated album of their catalog. it doesn't get the respect it deserves.
We have about 1500 songs.....all of them good!

If you meant "underrated", I strongly disagree. As far as I can tell, Pinkerton is the fan favorite. I happen to prefer the Blue album myself.

"Pinkerton" is my favorite when I'm feeling a certain way, but the "Blue Album" is great no matter how I'm feeling. Both are great, though. Song for song, I think I like "Blue" more, but as a concept I like "Pinkerton" more. It's pretty much tied...

I've posted some of the pictures I took at this show. You can check them out at my dorky site (http://tomfoolery.freeservers.com/). If you have any questions or comments, let me know. Those are cropped and resized versions of the pics. If you'd like one full-sized for some silly reason, I'll hook you up.

wow! those are very nice, tf.

most of mine are similar (except yours are far superior). the only one i have that's considerably different is an extremely close up one of roger. it's pretty scary. you can see inside his mouth (because of the weird angle), his eyes are red, and there's some not-so-flattering visible perspiration (c'mon, those lights must've been hot). he looks like the demon trying to be exorcised.

thanks again, mr. foolery!

I think Pinkerton is definitely the favorite of the majority of Weezer fans... I know it's my favorite... there is so much pain and longing in that album that no self respecting geek reject couldn't love it.

Rachel, that is very cool. I would love a picture with Matt, or better yet Parrish. I'm quite jealous. I have some pictures from the last Red Rose show. My scanner is incredibly shitty and I tried to repair the photos but ended up making most of them worse but if anyone is interested they are there for your viewing pleasure:

Well, thank you. I love my picture but I still kind of regret asking for it. He was very nice about it but I think he was a little taken back.. understandable. I was on some sort of first show in a year natural high and was like "Hey! Let's get pictures!" and didn't even think about how weird it was.

Matt better get used to it. He's going to be a rock star, after all, and will probably hang with Fred Durst.

I have so many pictures that I've been meaning to put on a site, but haven't had the chance to yet. If anybody was interested, I might link them someday.

I was secretly hoping that The Features would be in New York when YDDD and I would be there...not that we'd see them...it would just be comforting...and that way we wouldn't miss a show.

Oh well, I still think it will be pretty cool to be in New York on the 4th of July, even if it means missing, uh, something back home. sad.gif

I would be glad to share the pictures if I ever had the chance to...I still have one roll to get developed from the last show @ Slow Bar. I got the first roll developed, but haven't had the chance to get the second one done yet. I've got some decent ones, I shall try soon... I found some unlabeled roll of film that I have no idea what's on. I'm hoping that it's from a Features show, but that's doubtful.

This talk of a Fourth of July show is exciting me. That would be an excellent early birthday present for me.....please, Features... smile.gif unsure.gif

Yes...I thought of that as soon as I typed it, but posted it anyway. The Features are an exception. The same is true for DND and Verde for me, and maybe another band or two that I like.

At any rate, I don't want to see Ryan Adams in New York.
