Alrighty, so if the Features could play any 15 songs, which would they be? Well, any 15 songs that came about since Rollum joined the band. This is the place to make your votes and discuss other peoples' votes. You can argue, barter, whatever... have some fun with this.

We're starting this thread a bit early so once you're reading this, you can vote. The voting will end Friday night at midnight. Posts/votes or edits made after this time/date are ineligible, so be sure to wrap things up before this time to avoid any problems. And yes, you can go back and edit your votes during the open voting time if you change your mind.

I will probably ask a couple of other members to help me do an independent count and we'll post the results by the end of the weekend (my guess). The Features will then get this list and begin practicing.

If you have any questions about what are the "Rollum" songs, you can ask questions here and I'll try and get an answer as soon as possible. Basically the songs "off limits" are those off the Features EP and those recorded during that session but that did not make it on the EP like Extension Chord. Your Smile is probably not a qualifiable song, but I will double check.

Happy voting!

Well, here are mine...

1. Don't Lie To Me
2. Serious
3. Harold
4. Stagecoach
5. Temporary Blues (pre-2003 change version, but TB in any form is fine by me)
6. Armani Suede
7. The Damage Is Done
8. The Design ("there's more to life than living" version)
9. Moonlight
10. Oh My Love
11. Your Smile
12. Leave It All Behind
13. Paid To Think
14. Anti-Gravity Class of '93
15. Jurley

For covers, "Savoy Truffle" would be really cool. Or "Animals" by Talking Heads...

Digsy, "Hey Lou" was on the Features EP (unlisted track), so this song is not eligible. Nice list otherwise. And oh boy, Damage is Done would be nice to hear again.

So was Armani Suede...however it was rerecorded during Rollum's era, so does that count?

Yeah, you're right. Armani Suede is still played from time to time anyway so I think it's fine to vote for.

my selfish list that goes only for songs that i might not ever hear again otherwise (including pre-rollum stuff on elt's hint):

1. harold
2. don't lie to me
3. disco
4. willie and the willigers
5. oh my love
6. the damage is done
7. stick together (just for tom)
8. temporary blues
9. radio one
10. jurley
11. extension cord
12. YOUR SMILE
13. hey lou
14. antigravity c/o '93 (vote for it, you know you love it)
15. captain williams (you're welcome)

i'm no good at coming up with cover suggestions, so i'm going to mostly just list the ones that have already been mentioned that i like:
"savoy truffle" would be my #1 vote.
*other beatles..."happiness is a warm gun (excellent idea on the "bang bang shoot shoot"s, sadie)," "hey bulldog," "ticket to ride," "i'm so tired"
*the kinks..."picture book," "do you remember walter?"
*talking heads..."animals," "cities," "making flippy floppy," "pulled up"
*and good call, rd, on the nerves' "hanging on the telephone" and the jam's "start!"
*and good call, other rd, on pere ubu's "non-alignment pact" and kool and the gang's "get down on it"
*smee is a genius. the only thing i can't picture is matt pelham having anyone naked by the end of that song. it would be hilarious to hear him say that, though.

Yeah, you're right. Armani Suede is still played from time to time anyway so I think it's fine to vote for.
"Hey Lou" has been played at least three or four times in the Rollum era. Maybe it should count, too?

When the band agreed to do this, were they expecting us to pick fifteen fairly current songs, or did they know that we would ask them to re-learn fifteen classics?

I'm new to The Features and have never been to a Features show, so sorry if this list sucks.

1. Your Smile
2. Armani Suede
3. D-Con (Radio One) [Come on, vote for this...you know you want to]
4. The Damage is Done
5. Don't Lie To Me
6. Stick Together
7. Discotheque
8. Paid To Think
9. Anti-Gravity Class of '93
10. Thursday
11. Harold [Since it's on everyone else's list]
12. Moonlight
13. Leave It All Behind
14. Jurley
15. Capt. Williams

Not finalized list, I guess, so if anyone wants to banter that's cool by me. I haven't heard about half of those, just mimicking some of the others' lists and picking songs that have cool names. So yeah, banter away. I'll be willing to trade any of these if you vote for D-Con (Radio One)!

I'm actually a little afraid of some of these rarities winning, simply because how well will they be able to remember/play them. I would be perfectly content for them to break out a couple oldies in the context of a normal set. However, since the opportunity is presenting itself, I will go all out and post the 15 occasional/dead songs I want to hear. I may amend this later to reflect a more old/new mix.

33 1/3
Action
Burma
Bring on the Night
Captain Williams
Don't Lie to Me
The Design
The Damage is Done
Discoteque
Idea of Growing Old
Stick Together
Jurley
Harold
Moonlight

Really? I read in an earlier thread that anything post The Features EP would be fine, but then again, the song might've been recorded and played only before Rollum entered the band. I don't know that much about Features history just yet so I apologize if that song is disqualified. (Damn shame though, that it'll never be played again...)

ok, these are subject to change:

1. paid to think
2. the design (agree with lawnwrangler about the lyrics)
3. burma
4. damage is done
5. harold
6. armani suede
7. oh my love
8. the way its meant to be
9. the beginning
10. dark room
11. captain williams (you owe me a free rental, ghostflower cool.gif )
12. anti-gravity class of '93 (i hate you, HSS)
13. bumblebee
14. circus
15. serious

As far as covers as concerned:

- please please please play "Jet"!!!!!!
-"Hanging on the Telephone" by The Nerves (popularized by Blondie)
-ANY KINKS SONG (though i think that they could do a fine job with "mindless child of motherhood", "love me till the sun shines", "holiday in waikiki" but i just want to hear them do any kinks song)
-As far as the Beatles are concerned, I definitely agree with "Savoy Truffle". That would be glorious. I could also see the band doing "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite", "Hello Goodbye", "She Said, She Said" or "Hey Bulldog"
-"Substitute" by The Who, though i will agree with Richard D. and say that "A Quick One" would be fucking amazing
-"When You're Young" or "Start!" by The Jam
-ANY VELVET UNDERGROUND SONG
-"Virginia Plain" would be fucking great!!!! (though i would really like to hear them play "Remake/Remodel", and i could also see the band doing a version of "over you")

Exliontamer may speaketh the truth and if so, fucking awesome!

By the way, this is maybe 4 in the morning with a cold talking, but for now I'd say let's keep our "top 15 vote" in a single post and just keep updating that until Friday night. You can obvioulsy post multiple times about questions and comments and all that, but I think that makes it easier on me (and whoever counts) to not have multiple top 15s by the same person. You know what I'm sayin'?

FIRST, A GIANT "FUCKIN' A, MAN" goes to the FEATURES for doing this. This is one of the coolest things ever in the history of the Nashville music scene. I can't overstate my appreciation.

SECOND, I will hold off on voting for now, as I want to do so with a printed-out list of all available songs in front of me, and the logistics don't allow that right now.

FINALLY, I want to see every person on this MB vote for "Don't Lie to Me." If you like me, care for me, or respect me at all...Hell, if you like GOOD MUSIC at all, please please please put this song on your list. Add me to the list of people who will be willing to "swap" votes for this song.

MY LIST is FORTHCOMING.

I'm OUT.

Blow it out? Man, that song is so gay. Only a gay falcon would suggest something like that.

For the record, I refuse to vote until the Features decide to reschedule the show to a date when I'll be able to see it. Of course, I will accept bribes if the price is right.

I should add that the Damage Is Done version that I want is the older one with 3 "Oh boy, you really done it this time"s, not the newer with 2.

Older Temporary Blues with "I've got the temporary blues", not the newer "I wanna go home" like in Discotheque. "Watch out here it comes, temporary blues is gonna bring you down" is spoken in the older and Matt sings it in the newer. The old version is far superior in my eyes, to the point that I would rather have a different song altogether if they are going to play the newer version.

4. Roger's Theme
5. Engine Debris

10. I wont Let You Down
11. Stick Together
12. Treehouse Club
13. Your Smile

I completley agree.

I don't mind the new "I wanna go home"s as much as the changes with "Watch out here it comes..".

well, now's just about a good a time as any to bring this up, but is there anyway to keep people from voting more than once with all the diff. screen names? I don't really feel like making up more screen names just so my vote actually counts the same as others...

and i'm doing the same thing as JC as far as my list is concerned

yea, I was thinking about that too. Some people are voting for songs that they play all the time. Which, is fine by me if those songs are indeed their favorites. Personally, I can't see them playing 15 cover songs on sat. so I'll prolly be leaving some of the regulars/recent ones off my "ballot". The beginning and Circus are two that I can't live without.

I'd rather hear some of the old standards as much as anyone. Still, this is a unique opportunity, and we really don't know when, if ever, they will play any of these rarer and older tunes. This could be our last chance to hear these songs. Hence, Circus got booted from my list.

haha- I was just trying to get on stopforme's cool list. See here
From that link: it ruins a show for me to see morons being over-enthused........doing tandem coreography....

See, I am not a moron - I will be doing cHoreography.

I think coreography must have something to do with porno or maybe geology. I would be just dancing. Well, actually, leaning to the right, back, back & left. I think that's the right order..it's been so long.

Anyway, I would bet that dance has been around much longer than stopforme has been a fan, so she must suffer through the torture of watching it be performed!

Ok JC- I'll trade you one "Don't Lie To Me" for a "Disco."
Consider it done.

I haven't done an "official" tally, but it seems to be looking grim for "Don't Lie to Me." How sad it would be if this one super-rare opportunity to hear this gem goes unused.

My thinking on this whole request thing is as follows: Why should we use these precious "votes" on songs that the Features play every show anyway? I mean, I love "Harder to Ignore" too, but you can hear that at any Features show these days. Maybe we should take advantage of this special opportunity and use all of our "requests" for stuff that we wouldn't normally get to hear. You know? It's just a thought.

I also totally agree with the sentiment that songs that we hear every single show shouldn't be voted for, unless it is your absolute fave. I mean, I have LIAB on my list because it's my favorite song, but I am more than willing to take off "Harder to Ignore" if anyone else wants to do a tradey-trade.

"Moonlight" and "Oh My Love" also need more votes, darnit.

i agree with jc about the songs we can hear every show vs. songs we may not ever hear again thing. my list is composed completely of the latter. though i'm a little nervous about it, i am going on exliontamer's hint and voting for what i want (including pre-rollum stuff). i may be throwing some of my votes out the window, but i'm willing to take that chance.

so, about barter...digsy, i'll trade you a "jurley" for a "antigravity c/o '93."

I thought a lot about this, and I figured it might be kinda rude to milk The Features for everything they've got, making them re-learn 15 "dead" songs in a week. My list is about half and half old and new. I think The Features are doing a really cool thing by allowing this, but I also know that they probably quit playing a lot of these songs for a reason. I remember the face Rollum gave me when I yelled for Armani at the last show, and it was obvious he didn't want to play it. I just want them to have as good a time as the fans, and throwing some current stuff into the mix of oldies, I'm sure, will show them that we appreciate it as much as their past work. It's just a thought.

Incidentally, I noticed that not many people are voting for Thursday. Do you think they'll throw this in automatically or is everyone consciously not voting for it?

Also, is this list just for the Nov. 7th date, making the 8th a "regular" show, or are they going to play the same set both nights?

I don't think we're "pushing it" to ask for much of what has been asked for... the deal was originally for all post-rollum material AND Your Smile. elt seemed to have it on good authority that we could even request pre-rollum stuff, and I feel that that is the way to go. The band seems to know what they are setting themselves up for, and I honestly see this as the band doing one of a few things. I could totally see this as an opportunity for the band to give one last chance to certain songs that are beloved that they dropped because they didn't think them to be as great as we do. In the process, maybe they'll bring one or two of them back. At least this way they know what of their old material they should think about revisiting. Or they're just doing a really cool "last local show" for all of the fans that will be lost in the masses of the "new" fanbase that the full-length will doubtless bring them. Either way, the band seems to understand what they are getting into, and they are giving themselves plenty of time to take it on. I see everything as fair game, and as such, I voted for the songs that I most want to hear. I've heard Buffalohead and Leave It All Behind a ton of times, but I've never heard Your Smile or Don't Lie to Me. I know what's going to get my vote. They asked, and I'm not going to lie and say that I'd rather hear something that won't be a unique experience.

I think songs that are six or so months old are still fairly new. Hence the "new stuff" reference.

Not the same song. "Discotheque" was the song that partially morphed into "Temporary Blues." It's much older, and was recorded at least once. "Disco" on the other hand was more recent and much much more rare. It was never recorded in the studio and was only played live like 5 or 6 times. Just clarifying. They are not in any way the same song.

I think that the Features probably knew how this vote would turn out before they agreed to do it. I don't think voting for all rarities is rude at all. Milk it, baby. Milk it.

thank you. does this mean i owe you 50 cents (the monetary value, not the rapper)?

and smee, all of the bartering is making my head hurt too. but if you really love a song...hmmm, let's use "antigravity c/o '93" as an example...you'll do anything to get some votes. and it shouldn't be hard for the tally-person(s) to tally, because when people make trades, they're just editing their original lists...or at least i hope so. beacuse, if not, i would definitely agree with your sentiment.

in other news, i still have some votes to buy. richarddawson, sexysadie, damon...i'm looking your way.

Hello,
I will not vote but as far as the cover song thing goes, i think this whole thread is a sneaky trick to try and uncover who the annoying girl is that always screams "psycho killer" at every show. we all know this pisses off the band more than anything.

i'm sure a lot of you are making your own heads hurt agonizing about this all day with the voting and stuff. it's just a couple of shows. whatever they play WILL be good, no matter what. and isn't the point that we put down 15 songs that we each want, not that we "traded" for? what if all the trades don't make a difference, and whatever song it is doesn't get played anyway? it's like voting for nader.

For anyone who plays a music instrument, learning an old song isn't as difficult as it seems. Besides, the band offered. I'm sure they knew beforehand that they would be getting requests for all of these fossils everyone keeps digging up (which is a great thing).

deal! i'll give damon your dollar and you can have the bear mask. i think the bear mask has seen it's glory days anyway. it's time for it to be passed on...
and maybe rollum can just plug his ears during the "93" part. or wear his senior class t-shirt, clearing stating his year of commencment, so that no one will be mistaken.

I don't think it's that big of a deal. If people want to trade, that's cool. It's part of the fun. I am confident that either Don't Lie To Me or Discotheque will be played and that's all I really want anyway. Jurley and Paid To Think will hopefully see time as well. It will be a great night.

This is the coolest thing EVER!!!

My top 15, for whatever it may be worth:

1.  YOUR SMILE (with dance)
2.  DISCOTEQUE
3.  D-CON (RADIO ONE)  (always wanted this one)
4.  THAT'S ME  (don't remember seeing this one before)
5.  JURLEY (with audience echoing Roger)
6.  STICK TOGETHER for TF (and me)
7.  CAPTAIN WILLIAMS could be updated as Captain Daigle
8.  THE DESIGN  don't care which lyrics
9.  HEY LOU with x-tra "over and over"s
10.  DON'T LIE TO ME with x-tra organ
11.  BURMA
12.  BUMBLE BEE
13.  MOONLIGHT
14.  MATT'S LITTLE DITTY Always a favorite of mine...all of you forgot
15.  WILLIE & THE WILLIGERS C'mon!!! It's a classic!!!

Forget doing any of the ones that they're playing regularly now.  I'm tired of all of them except "Harder 2 Ignore" anyway these days (esp The Beginning and GSRNR).

Discussing covers becomes relevant when our voice may be heard.  I'd be happy with re-doing previous covers, as long as they were RECORD STACK, SWEET CHILD O' MINE, HEARD IT THRU THE GRAPEVINE, LIKE A VIRGIN, or HUNGRY LIKE THE WOLF.

I don't know that it pisses them off, but I think most people get tired of hearing the request when they'd rather just hear an original. The only time it remotely irritates me is when somebody does it early in the set. The rest of the time I don't really care.

Burma, Oh My Love, and Anti-Gravity Class of '93 are now duking it out for spot 15. If one of those pulls ahead, Radio One will be knocked out. And unless something totally crazy happens, we will be hearing Damage is Done, Paid To Think, Don't Lie To Me, Harold and Temporary Blues. The Design, Your Smile, Jurley, Circus and Armani Suede round out the top 10. Stick Together is also just barely in the top 15, and both Disco and Discotechque are in the top 27. Captain Williams is hovering just outside the top 25.

Just thought I would attempt to let everyone know how their campaigning is going. But no matter what, this will truly be an amazing, amazing show.

This is certainly baffling to me... so many people's lists have several songs that are heard all of the time. They will, in fact, probably get played at the show in addition to the magical 15 that get voted for. If not, they will get played the following night. It just doesn't make sense to request Walk You Home whe it's been played at every show for two years. But to each their own.

And I have Circus on my list, which as you point out somethingman, doesn't compute because it gets played at every show. It is my favorite Features song, and when last I was able to see the band regularly, it was something of a treat. However, a little research revealed that it is still alive and kicking, so I'll be willing to trade it away for something else that's great. Just not Antigravity... sorry.

And now that Don't Lie to Me seems to be a lock, I'm pushing for Burma and Standing By.... come on, you know you want 'em!

I think it does make sense because they asked to post the 15 songs you would most like to hear in one show...your ideal setlist. Therefore, my list includes/ed the few songs that I think should be played at every show. I'm probably going to edit it today to make other people happy, basically because some of the choices I made have no chance, but this goes against what I think is right. My list, by the end of today, will not reflect my true feelings on the perfect Features show. The way it's looking now, the list is going to be nowhere near my ideal set unless they do decide to play some of the standards, too. I'm sure the show will be fabulous either way. Maybe I'll actually learn to enjoy some of the old songs that you all are voting for that I just do not love.
But what will happen to the boy when the circus comes to town?

Don't worry about making any deals with me. Last night I went to the mp3 site and refreshed my mind on what the older songs sounded like, and Burma completely rocks. It has been added to my list free of charge.

On a side note: a cover of "Somebody's Watching Me" would be priceless in my opinion. There are lots of great songs out there that i think the features just wouldn't sound right in covering, they could really pull this one off and sound awesome in doing so!

I was just wondering why no one has voted for Waffle House Menu THATS A PRICELESS SONG, and, ive never seen them do it live. I'm willing to do some trading dammit.
not to be insulting or anthing, but that song is like 30 seconds lone, why waste a vote on a 30 seconds long song when you could vote for a full song

And I agree with the whole thing about songs that are regularly played, this is a once in a long time chance to get to hear a bunch of retired songs, so mhy not go for the oldies.

It's always a good Features show when they open with Circus... So I don't want to jinx it by not having them play Circus. That's why it's on my list.

Here's why I think they don't like people yelling out Psycho Killer....

My band used to play Psycho Killer, and people would always yell it out at shows. It's annoying, because playing a cover is almost like a gimmick. It's something that's done to get people interested in the band, but it's a means to an end. You want them to like your music, not someone else's. The cover is to just ease them in with something they already know.

I'm a little concerned about "The Damage is Done." I don't know if a lot of people have taken it off their lists, but just browsing through, I'm not seeing it that much anymore. It was #1 with over 70% of the votes, and if it somehow gets lost in all this trading madness (which I'm not opposed to, since I did trade myself) it would really suck. I'm just wondering if everyone is going to, in these last 12 or so hours of votings, think "Oh, that song will be okay, I'll take it off my list and put Willie & the Willigers on instead" and cause what are the current top 15 to be completely trumped.

Eh...I'm getting worried...

I remember many moons ago when the message board was in its infancy and a certain brianeno2 requested "Willie and the Willigers"- and in so doing showed who in the crowd had been reading the message board. If HE didn't get his wish that night, y'all are just grasping at straws to get it played this time.

Just a note, we were late in getting out the mailing list letting people know of this opportunity to vote, so the management has decided to extend the voting until Monday at noon.

If by chance this thread does not close down at noon, understand that any posts that show a posted/edited time of later than 12:00pm on Monday will be discarded (ah, that sounded powerful!).

I don't want to be greedy, but I'd like to make another request of the band. Would it be possible for one of the members of the band to talk about some of the songs before playing them? I'm not expecting the show to become an episode of VH-1 Storytellers, but I think it'd be nice if they shared any significant stories behind a few of the songs. Specifically, I'd like to know who Peanut is and what he's doing with Matt's shoes.

Yeah, what do we pay you for, anyway!?! I mean, you've had like 3 hours to count these up. We need to know as soon as possible what songs will be played and in what order they will be played for that matter. We wouldn't want any surprises or anything!

Just kidding, Rachel tongue.gif But wouldn't it be nice to not know which songs they'll be playing until they actually play them (or the day after they play them for those of us unlucky enough to miss the show)?

BrianW, I'm not sure what the plan is, but I think some of us would like to keep the setlist a surprise. If you post the information, can we get a spoiler alert? Please?

Oh and by the way, can we all please keep in mind that the band has complete 100% veto power for each and every song-- no matter how many votes they got? Let's show nothing but appreciation for these shows.

Not a bad idea. What about taking it out to another extreme; Decorate the stage with white roses and candles to set the VH1 / MTV concert sort of mood.

I want the set list to be a surprise, too. However, knowing the results of the voting process won't ruin the surprise because:

a. As Carl points out, the band is under no obligation to play the songs we chose.

b. We won't know the order in which they'll be played. I doubt the final order will be set until just before they go on stage... and maybe not even then.

c. They may play only fifteen oldies, but I doubt they'll limit their entire set to just fifteen songs at such a big show. I wouldn't be surprised if they throw in five to ten current songs to make it a decent-sized Features rock extravaganza... unless of course relearning all of these old songs totally wears them out and they're too tired to play any more.

I think that's why they're playing two nights in row-- so they don't have to play a 3 hour set in one night. Friday is fan's choice and saturday is new stuff, semi-new stuff, and covers. Of course, I'm sure there will be a few exceptions.

Did I mention that I'm pissed I'll be missing these shows?

Others are publishing results, so be careful what threads you enter! Official results will be in a few days, though I'm sure they'll be exactly (or at least pretty darn close) to what's already been published.

The band's gonna try really hard to get the songs ready, btw.
