Don't forget Star Wars on DVD... yeah I geeked out and just bought it... at least I had the excuse that El Prego needed pre-natal vitamins... the other 24 nerds in line looked at me with jealous rage, knowing deep at their core that I had had sex with someone before.

The bridesmen wore tracksuits that said "Pimp" on the back. They also ate chicken fingers at the reception.

Drugs (pot and pills) in Oklahoma. (Tracy Gold and Edward Furlong were also arrested this past week).

I just love James Spader, and I'm glad he beat Tony Soprano.

I have still never seen a Star Wars movie.

I was at Hastings' midnite sale and there was much miscommunication involved. For starters, two of my friends from work called on Sunday night to find out the price and they were both told that the trilogy would be 50% off and would be $25. When I bought mine, the total came to around $72 (I also bought some Star Wars children's books...nerd). I asked, "I thought it was supposed to be half off" and mysteriously my new total was around $60. The rest of the people I came with, after investigating our receipts, realized that they paid the full $50. When a worker was asked, they said that there was apparently a miscommunication and only the people who asked about the discount got it. What? If that wasn't part of the midnite deal, then why was this told to my friend when he called there the night before and then repeated when we called to make sure that he had heard correctly? My copy was $35 and that is an extremely good deal BUT we were told $25. I dunno, I didn't give anyone a hard time about it because I know what bitchy customers are like and I don't want to be one of those, and I'm glad I got it.

And the DVD is amazing.

Blasphemy.

At least Drea de Matteo and Michael Imperioli won, but I still can't believe Allison Janney beat Edie Falco.

The Emmy awards always shape my opinion on other TV shows. Like I always held a big grudge against "Frasier" in the 90s for beating both "Seinfeld" and "Friends" in every category every single year. I've just now started to appreciate "Frasier" as a really good show. The same has happened to every single HBO series since I only had HBO for about 4 months during "Six Feet Under"'s 3rd season. I have a weird grudge against "The Sopranos" for winning all of the awards and for taking up 4 out of 5 of the drama writing awards. Just one of my little quirks...I am glad that Sarah Jessica Parker won since she never won before, even though I've never seen a "Sex & The City" episode.

i'm pleased that britney has married, because it means she'll have somewhere to go when she disappears completely from the collective consciousness of the world. behold, for it is coming soon.

as for macauley culkin...it appears that i might have misplaced some sympathy meant for hurricane-stricken floridians, but i just feel sorry for him. pitiful...

i have been sick the past few days and i was under a lot of medication when i wrote that bit about the emmys. i do, indeed, feel that way about it, but if i had been clear-headed, doubtlessly i would've thought better of posting it. naturally, the axis of evil would come to attack, and not my post or my opinion (which would be fine), but me. there's really no reason to make it personal. i dislike something, and you like it. that should be the beginning and the end of it. i don't like taking the high road, as it is an unfamiliar one, but i'm left with little choice, as the low road is jammed with people who insist upon insulting me in code like fucking 3rd graders.

celebrity worship is dumb and fun. like dancing. and i dance, a lot. however, it doesnt keep me from staying up to date on issues/politics/literature/other things that you might think are important. i just dont like talking about issues because i get too [emo]tional and thats no fun.
dancing + celebrities = fun.
liking bad stuff + disliking good stuff + being emo = no fun.

buttons and excessive clapping are both dumb and they annoy me [and others] therefore they do hurt someone.

This is all funny. As someone who studies pop culture, I think it's safe to say that American culture, be it high, low, or in the middle, is now deeply rooted in popular culture. Popular culture is our culture and even though people may dislike it and hate it, they are still giving it enough thought to hate it and come up with arguments about why it is wrong. If you are living in America (and aren't Amish), you are involved in pop culture. So what? Why get pissy about? Why hate things that you can't change? I guess I'm just a laid back kinda guy and I dislike the celebrity-news industry, but I don't let it keep me from enjoying harmless things as VH1 programs, the Emmy's, movies that are released in more than 500 theaters, and (heaven forbid) television. I get that the world is screwed up. I get that our country is screwed up. Forgive me and my kind for not wanting to think only about it and be deprived of some actual mindless and harmless fun. I liked the "Charlie's Angels" movies. I absolutely adore "Joey." So what?

Really, this is just a comment inspired by an attitude that I come across a lot. I don't intend to be personally assaulting or 3rd graderish since that's just not cool. This is just my opinion, blah blah blah...

And I agree with StopForMe on her points...except for the ridiculous buttons and clapping comment, but hey, I can't agree with her 100%.

fuck no. as anyone who knows me in the least could tell you, i am not emo. i do not recognize the term, first of all, as having any kind of discernible meaning. second, i sure as hell don't listen to any bands or artists who fall under this little sub-genre, atleast that i am aware...i don't want you to admit you're evil any more than i am willing to admit that i am anything as deplorable as "emo". i'd just like there to be a line between myself and my opinions...for God's sake, there's no reason to despise each other based on such things. there's enough hate in the world as it is, and most of it is based on mutual misunderstanding...let's not add to it.

It's a matter of to which degree you involve yourself in it. This is a disagreement based on what degree is accceptable, which could have been completely avoidable had the 'do everything you can to love celebrities and gossip about them' crowd not taken umbrage with a simple statement of opinion.

There is a blatant difference between celebrity worship and the excitement I get about a cd or show. Here, let me outline it for you:

When I go to a show, I'm going because there is a contractual agreement that when I pay my $5/10/15, The Features will provide the music that I want to hear. When I buy a cd, The Features have created, produced and provided the music that I want to hear. I get excited about the music. I don't get excited or pay 10 dollars to see the band stand on stage and be cute. I don't stand outside their homes with cameras and wait for them to snort coke, have anorexia, (gasp!) drink in public, or even get married! I could give a shit for their personal lives. They do what they want to do, and I'm sure that at least most of the band would prefer it that I leave them alone for that time. However, I am very interested in the professional life, which is to say, making music. If you want to attend a Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen movie, by all means, do so. That's not celebrity worship. Celebrity worship is trying to be involved in some third party manner or living vicariously through a celebrities personal life. And quite frankly, I think that the degree to which some people watch celebrity tabloids, be it TV or print, and the degree to which the media plays up the importance of celebrities is sickening.

I will go see them in a movie. I will watch them on TV. I will listen to their music. I will discuss the merits of the professional work they've done. Hell, you may even catch me making a comment or two about a celebrity who's actions have been in the news lately if someone's talking about it. But you won't see me watching E! unless the Howard Stern show is on, you won't see me reading any magazine at the grocery checkout lane except Weekly World News, and I damn sure don't engage discussions about what's happened in the world of celebrity in the past week.

The point is, everyone who treats celebrities like they're gods all sit there saying "well, it's not really my fault. I mean, look at all the other people that are doing it. I can't stop them. So why not have fun with it? How are we supposed to change society for the better? It's too ingrained." when what they don't realize is that society is nothing but a bunch of 'one person's and when you just go along with whatever anyone else is doing, just because the authority of the crowd says it's ok, well that's exactly the same thing that allow attrocities to happen. Who is the authority of the crowd but each individual?

granted, you've made a point, but it's a very weak one and therefore difficult to refute. it should be clear, though, that there is a world of difference between liking someone's music and worshipping them...also, it should be noted that celebrities these days aren't required to be talented. what this amounts to is being interested in someone solely based on their fame--that they are on magazine covers. this is what i think is sad; i'm not in the least bit interested in the particulars of paris hilton's sex life, britney's marriages, or anything whatsoever to do with clay fucking aiken. they are not talented people, and are completely unworthy of my attention. on the other hand, i do get rather excited about, say...radiohead. i do look forward to the features shows...but none of that amounts to celebrity-worship in any way. i couldn't care less about what they do when they are not on stage entertaining me. i'm into talent, genius...and if i am accused of genius-worship, that will be fine by me--or atleast it will be preferable to being party to the mass hollywood arse-licking that typifies the modern american lifestyle.

But you won't see me watching E! unless the Howard Stern show is on, you won't see me reading any magazine at the grocery checkout lane except Weekly World News, and I damn sure don't engage discussions about what's happened in the world of celebrity in the past week..
you're not making any sense.

no guys, there's not a difference between what you guys call celebrity worship and what you guys are actually doing.

you may pay to go to a show and have a recording of their music, but you do not pay to post on their message board multiple times a day, giving opinions on your favourite and least liked songs and shows and looking up cd reviews on line and in print, etc etc etc.

and come on, you guys may not engage discussions about what happened in the world of celebrity in the past week, but you most certainly engage in the discussions.

Just because his lyrics are personal doesn't mean that I require that knowledge of his personal life. That part of his life, he's put it out there for the public to know. Anyone who's heard those songs on the radio or in a friend's car knows that the Features' lead singer has twins. You've seen it in online reviews from people that have never seen the Features. They've been in cover art. That's hardly requiring a knowledge of his personal life, and I'm sure he'd agree.

Yeah, I saw them at the show. I noticed them. I didn't stare at them. I didn't approach them. I saw they were there, thought "that's nice," and left them alone. Real strong argument. I also noticed your kids at a show. It's kind of hard not to notice small children amidst the random assortment of twenty and thirty-somethings at a features show.

here's the deal

the features aren't just about cds and shows for you guys as you and andrew have stated.
that goes for anyone that posts here - especially carligula who gets phone calls from meeks.

you take everything else i mentioned regarding the features in this thread into consideration, too. and that's more than just cds and shows. indeed pelham's personal life is public and directly correlates with his professional work. saying you don't care about his personal life isn't true.

enough. this is ridiculous. whether culkin is a celebrity or not is completely irrelevant to this discussion. if i feel sorry for him, it doesn't mean i am worshipping him, does it? certainly not. i couldn't care less about him, to tell you the truth; i wouldn't have even remembered that he was alive if someone hadn't posted his sad little mugshot on the board. i find your illogical arguments tiresome and belabored, and your non-existent point is not helped in any way by your vicious belligerence. so in the interest of not sustaining any more senseless abuse or name calling, i'm retiring from this thread. good day to you.

Good lord, it looks like I picked the right day to not look at the message board. Posting on a band's message board (particularly this one where the band is rarely even mentioned), is not celebrity worship. Being friends with them on myspace certainly isn't, unless all three of the main participants in this argument worship me, because you're all "friends" with The Privates.

This has become entirely too personal. As the "diplomat" of this message board (that was a joke), I know to a certain extent a good 75% or more of the people who regularly post here. I've noticed how different their internet personalities are from their real personalities, and it bothers me that their "characters" can carry over to the way they are perceived in real life. Stopforme, gasp, is not a bitch in real life, but frankly, if I only knew her from this board, I'd probably think she was too. Carl is not a fanboy, or whatever he is perceived to be on this board in real life. RayDavies isn't just a music snob or whatever I pegged him as at first. And Andrew is one of the smartest, friendliest people I know, he just won't bullshit with you if he doesn't like something, and I think that's great. He and stopforme have a lot in common in that way.

This post isn't about "can't we all just get along," because fuck, that would be boring. I just get a little tired of defending my friends to people because they are perceived in a certain way by people who only know them from the internet. Real life friendships have been lost because of arguments over avatars. AVATARS!!! When RichardDawson first joined this message board, he immediately went after me in this thread, but I just never really gave a shit, and he's one of my best friends now. I really think that stopforme and andrew would get along if they met under different circumstances.

So what is my point? Fuck, I'm not sure anymore. I just think that these petty arguments are taken too seriously and it can bother me when people that I genuinely like think that they hate each other over stupid shit. I'll step off my soapbox now so you can proceed in attacking me.
I TOTALLY AGREE!

ok that thread ended up being really boring. im glad i was wiping your grandmothers ass this morning instead of partaking.
however, i do have one point to make and that is that there has been a misunderstanding.

watching the emmys, reporting on celebrity fashion, and watching e! does not make you a celebrity worshiper. i like to think of myself as a celebrity watcher. i like fashion and sex and the city, so i watch the emmys with my fingers crossed that the show wins and sarah jessica wears a fantastic dress. i probably like fashion as much as you people like music, if thats even possible. i like celebrities that i think i would get along with, and i dont see movies with celebrities who i think are assholes. i also like to ponder the romaticism of "new hollywood;" actors who i think will stand the test of time like hepburn, newman, garland, and gable have. i have an appreciation for the arts, basically; and watching the emmys is a celebration of the tacky but wonderful art of entertainment television. i really dont care if anyone thinks that im dumb for watching the emmys or e! or vh1. all i said was that i didnt agree with any of andrews previously mentioned tastes. and just like he judges emo kids for what they like, im judging him for what he likes.

address the entire issue, keith. it's sweet as cherry pie that you want to defend your friend but let's be for real.

watching the emmy's once a year is no more celebrity obsessive than doing what everyone does here. coming here everyday and saying that you don't care what they do when they're not onstage is a false statement. if you beg to differ, i'd be glad to hear you argue your point of view.

I'd just like to point out that I wasn't trying to state that watching the emmy's makes you celebrity obsessive. I was pointing out that I hate the emmy's because they're a symbol for that culture in our society.

coming here everyday and saying that you don't care what they do when they're not onstage is a false statement.  if you beg to differ, i'd be glad to hear you argue your point of view.

I care what the members of the band that are my friends do when they are off stage. Not to be "that guy," but I have known the band members (some better than others) personally for some time now. Regardless, it's pretty rare that I talk about The Features at all here.

i thought i might be included in this statement, but then i read the 'i genuinely like' part.
It seems that you think I hate you, Sina, and I don't. Just like you, I will call people on stuff that I disagree with, regardless of my friendships. If you need proof, go look at the lyrics thread on Circus where I call bullshit on Rob, or my response to pretty much everything Carl has ever written. Other people are afraid to disagree with you because of your reputation or whatever. I'm not.

Sorry to the 90% of the board that doesn't care about this.

and what the hell does this have to do with anything? are you disagreeing with me about something? are you trying to say you're the only one that isn't afraid to disagree with me? (if so did you read the thread, specifically deathscythe's posts? do you think i'm going to beat him up when he and april come over for dinner?) or are you trying to discredit anything i say as being true only because people are afraid of speaking out against me?

but yeah, i'm glad you use your own brain. i just don't know what it has to do with anything in that paragraph.

After having read this in its entirity, I have concluded that Andrew and Deathscythe are right and Sina is wrong - there is a difference between appreciating (and discussing with others) the work of an artist and just taking an interest in an individual for no other reason than that they are famous. BUT...watching the Emmys does not fall under that category, becuase they are awarding "excellence in television." I put quotes around that becuase I think that, in this day and age, the phrase "excellence in television" is really kind of an oxymoron, isn't it? But I digress...

I would say that stopforme is wrong, too, but she kind of redeemed herself with that whole "entertainment television is a form of art" bit. I liked that. I don't necessarily agree, but I like it.

But GOD, ya'll - don't take this so seriously. Life is way too short.

do you guys honestly know anyone who likes someone for no other reason than they're famous?  for serious.

i totally get deathyscythe's point.  he articulated well and our debate was nice and fun.

andrew's posts, however, read like unmedicated borderline personality disorder. he comes in the celebrity thread, states his sympathy for a celebrity and then states his raging distaste for what he considers 'celebrity worship.' it's one thing to have an opinion, but it's another thing to disagree with someone else's stated opinion in the manner of a whiney bitch - all the while contradicting yourself pretty much every step of the way.

and no i don't think posting here makes us celebrity features worshippers. duh. i just wanted to know - since deathscythe and andrew seemed to know the rules and guidelines of celebrity worship - where the boundries were. this is, of course, according to them.

the deal is the features are celebrities. even before the ep and lp. (i remember when i was 16 and getting excited and feeling overjoyed when i would see matt at o'charley's or shoney's.) the majority of us wouldn't have any idea who they were if they hadn't played shows and showed off their talent and art and stuff. the same exact thing applies to sarah jessica parker.

(i think this topic came up at a great time. this is the beginning of the features stardom and i look forward to lots of people coming here and topics like 'who's a real features fan, the better fan and who's just here because rollum is hott' coming up. you know, the petty 'i was here first' stuff. who - here and now - will cringe when the features are at the mtv video music awards? who will hate them when they get 'too big'?)

and it'd be nice to think that my and trex's dislike for andrew (and vice versa) started here, but obviously he came in here and made a comment toward trex specifically looking to get a reaction. a negative reaction.

edit: for some reason the quote got jacked up

See, I don't buy that you watch the red carpet arrivals or read Us just because you like fashion. If it's just about fashion, why not just watch the designers' shows and see the new shit when it's introduced properly?

i mean, it is about fashion. i like to see what celebrities are wearing. simple as that. and i do watch the fashion shows, but it is always interesting to see the dresses on a "real" person rather than a model, and interesting to see what the actor/stylist picks out, because they really do set the trends.

the best comparison i can make is that watching a fashion show is like hearing a song as a midi.

and i dont think that i was being immature. andrew responded to my sincere post with a scathing remark about the entire subject. i felt insulted and i responded, naturally.

and you think i've acted immature because i've stated more than once that andrew is emo and he whines about things. i didn't pull that out of my ass. he is emo and he does whine alot. and the mature thing to do would be to ignore it just because you guys are friends with him. sorry, that's not my game. you know this. calling me a 'fucking third grader' isn't immature name calling, right? But if you insist that I acknowledge it and respond, then yes, as a matter of fact, I do know people who are only interested in celebrities because they are celebrities. In fact, I know millions - all of the subscribers of all of the magazines in the checkout aisle at the grocery. It's true, they may have an interest in a handful of actors'/musicians' work, but they still eagerly read the latest about EVERYONE in that magazine, not just the few that they actually care about.

For the record, I never said that celebrity worship is stupid or wrong.

Also, for the record, I never said that Andrew wasn't also acting immature. But he didn't ask.

hott or not comes to mind.

Oh, and I thought it was funny that Sarah Jessica wears, like, $600,000 worth of pearls in one of those Gap ads. Ha ha. I love those ads, but now we know that the way to sell inexpensive, consumer-friendly jeans, cardigans, etc.: pair them with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of accessories... and some Blahniks!

Seriously, though, has anybody heard anything about Part Two of Season Six? Yadadada and I are dyyyyiiiiinnnggg to buy it.

No, the journalist didn't misquote. He/She took a quote out of context. There's a difference. I also didn't just omit things. I flat out changed them.

Just because someone may use a word incorrectly from time to time doesn't change the definition of a word.

Exactly. She said nothing about apostrophes. Which is why what I did was with out and out intention. The word misquote doesn't do it justice.

In the definition of incorrect, webster states that a synonym is "faulty." A definition of faulty is "not suited to the circumstances, design, or end <improper medicine>," when in fact what I did was very suited to the end.
