TOPIC: Summertime
Posted  Thursday, May 1, 2003 at 10:13 PM
Post 1 of 98
I think I started a topic similar to this last year (I can't believe it's been a year...I just realized that I missed my messageboard anniversary...).
Regardless of all that, I shall ask the question again. What are you guys gonna do this summer?
What am I going to do, you ask? Well, I am going to visit Franklin a lot and work a lot. Oh, and I am going to enjoy being able to read for pleasure again.

Last Summer

There's the link from last summer (hence the link's title). I love reminiscing, so I thought that I would share.

yeah, i have no exciting plans for this summer. hopefully i will be working a lot. however, i have the worst luck with finding jobs. perhaps it has something to do with the fact that i have little work experience and my only former place of employment went out of business so i have no references to check. at this point i will work anywhere (anywhere excludes fast food). anyone have any tips or connections? if so, i would be very thankful for a pm...

chillin with that fool cat of mine, Pharoah
for some reason when i first read this i thought that maybe it was a creative-jive way of saying that you would be hanging out with pharrell williams of the neptunes (whom you had developed a personal enough realtionship with to nickname). i was really impressed.

then i realized that you might just have an actual cat named pharoah that you planned on spending some time with. i was equally impressed.

i'll be in richmond virginia for about 3 weeks visiting family, then its off to vicksburg mississippi to visit extended family. In July, i'll camp out for titans tickets ( bet you all didn't know i was THAT crazy of a fan) It's actually a lot of fun- The team V.P. brings us free papa johns and drinks every day and mayfield brought us free icecream last year. Once or twice the workers brought us warm krispy kreme donuts for bfast. The news people are usually there every day as well, although they like to make us sound like unemployed idiots with nothing better to do (and i guess this is true to some extent) then i'll be in new orleans for a week. then i'll come home and look for a job i guess (hopefully dell)

I'll be taking 2 classes this summer at vol state and maybe working whenever I can. Other than that I'll just try to catch the occassional shows. I also wouldn't mind going to six flags. so pretty much this summer won't be that exciting once again.

As for your buddy Yaya, this is the most anticipated summer of his life for two reasons:

1) I'm marrying Token here in Nashville. It's gonna be a great gig.

2) It will be the end of this hellacious first year of teaching for me, and the end of it will mean a much-deserved break for me. Three weeks from today I'll be completely done...

The other things to anticipate:
Seth Timbs is planning to do another show in Nashville
Nels Cline comes to TN in June
a road trip to see Flaming Lips (perhaps)
X2, Matrix Reload, Terminator 3 (I'm a sucker, I know)
time to catch up with old friends and new
a Features show or 2
moving to Nashville

I may get a menial job in the mall again, too. We'll see.

Oh my God. What in the world? "smokin endo on my stoop"?

This summer, I'm moving back in with my parents in the Bellevue area to save some money. I'll be working my same job, but constantly thinking about getting a new one, you know, and pondering what to do with the rest of my life.

anyway, i plan on moving in with my parents for about 2 months, keeping it real at the Courier, saving a lot of money, not drinking or partying as much (seeing as i'll be living with my parents) and moving to Lexington, KY at the beginning of August in order to start school up again in the fall... wish i wasn't so busy...

This summer will probably suck. Ray and Sadie are going home leaving us behind in the boro. I am hoping to get a shitty job for the summer and save some money. Hoping to go to Memphis and Atlanta, and possibly Chicago. Maybe on the Greyhound. I've heard it's an interesting experience. Summer is no fun. It's too hot and I have to worry about getting sun burned all the time. Blah...

I will hopefully get a job because I need the money to buy all the new X2 action figures. Also, the Dandy Warhols' will be releasing their new album in July, as will the Shins. If the good Lord allows, there will be a White Stripes tour and I shall see them. Other than that, I plan on doing my usual lame stuff (organizing comics, writing, making excel spreadsheets) and seeing X2 every single weekend. I'm looking forward to "The Hulk" and I'm sure I'll end up seeing "The Matrix Reloaded" even though I'm not remotely thrilled with it.

And YDDD, are you and token going to have a separate message board ceremony? That would be most relevent....and geeky...

It's funny that you should say that, Digsy, because I am REALLY looking forward to the new Matrix movie. I am a BIG FAN of the first one, and I can honestly say that the only movie I have ever looked forward to more than this one was Star Wars Episode One a few years ago. Needless to say, I was pretty let down by that one. But from the looks of the previews, I don't think I'll be disappointed by Reloaded. It looks fantastic. The only part that kind of worries me is the shot of Neo flying across a canyon of some sort - that could get cheesy.

I'm looking forward to X2 and Hulk as well. But the Matrix will be the ultimate.

Lots of my friends having the releases of X-Men 2 and The Matrix Reloaded on their calendars in their rooms. So, they are looking forward to it. Plus, like I was telling Digsy earlier, there was this dude in front of us at the movies the other night, and he was buying X-Men tickets. There was a limit or two or something, and he kept getting back in line and buying some more. I admired his dedication. I bet he spent 50 bucks on tickets alone, b/c while I was standing in line to buy a drink he was still getting back in line for more tickets. Amazing.
And, TF, YDDD, Token, and I might go see it this weekend. I think that's what he told me, anyway.

Passions is the shit. It's soo addicting. I haven't been able to watch it lately because of school, but I belive Timmy (the doll) died (in real life on the same day he died in the show) and I'm not too sure what happened with the witch. Actually, it's starting now..

X2: X-Men United (the full title which I do think sounds lame, I don't understand why movies can't just be called "_____ 2" anymore) did not suck. It ruled

The Matrix Reloaded will not suck. I think it will be as good as the first one, which I did enjoy. Matrix just suffers from the same problem that I have with both the Simpsons and Radiohead. I saw Matrix, thought it was okay, and then all of the comic geeks, raver kids, goth wankers, all of them started bowing before it and going ga-ga over it. And then there are the people who say that it's "the best comic movie ever" even though it was never a comic. Feh. But I will see it, I'm just not so psyched about it.

Hulk could go either way. Ang Lee is very cool and the cast is grade A in my opinion. The only problem is the CGI Hulk. From what I've seen so far, he looks childish and not so cool. Hopefully this will be remedied when put into the context of a very good film, which it could be. It will be better than Daredevil though.

Terminator 3, what is up with this? I'll see it just out of curiousity, but probably when it hits DVD. This one is super iffy.

Charlie's Angels Full Throttle I am looking forward to. The first one is one of my guilty pleasures and I'm a sucker for girls doing moves.

This looks like a promising year.

To answer the initial question: Summer means little more to me than better weather on the weekends. My "schooling" is more of a job and it's year 'round, so I'll still be working in lab throughout the summer.

I suppose summertime means that there will be more parties at my place (the Boneyard), as we have a very nice back porch, backyard and roof for outdoor activities. There will definitely be a 4th Annual Boneyard August Birthday Suare (which we simply call B.A.B.S. in honor of our landlady Barbara-- clever, I know). I'll make an effort to invite more messageboard members this time (but only if you're cool).

My only concrete travel plan is to attend a conference in late June. This conference just happens to be taking place in Ft. Lauderdale and happens to be all-expenses paid.

I also plan on spending more quality time with Roadie's cat.

Yes, well, on the topic of summer I am really looking forward to that golden season. Growing up in Florida (where it was always hot, so who cares?) and being exceptionally fair skinned (so that hot weather just tends to make me turn red), it was never such a glorious thing. But now, now it is just the shit. It means the time of freedom, the time of long, hot days spent in the sun, the time TO GET MARRIED (hoorah!).

Needless to say, I am really looking forward to summer. It means even more now then when I was in high school or college and, for that, I can truly say that teaching is a good profession.

All I know is that Entertainment Weekly had a tiny little article about it in it's summer issue. It just said that "You've heard these guys on such shows as Gilmore Girls, they have a new album coming out this summer." I sure hope they do since I've almost worn out "Oh, Inverted World."

hmmmm...i've never had that problem when taking a shower in the dorms. maybe they like you better sadie, i've yet to get a mosquito bite in such "unmentionable" places.

as for the summer, i'm staying in the boro instead of going back to east tennessee. which it will be boring both ways seeing how most of my friends will be gone, aside from damon.

i plan on being a summer conference r.a. and finally getting a shitty little dorm room all to myself. yay! plus, i get to deal with lots of high school cheerleaders and football players that come in for summer camps....woo hoo... sad.gif .

i shall try to go to the pool and get a tan and get in shape over the summer. but i'll probably end up working and doing lots of homework since i'm taking two classes over the summer. but aside from these facts, i'm quite looking forward to summer.... smile.gif .

Know what I hate about summer? The freakin crickets. They are EVERYWHERE! I just about stepped on one with my barefoot and I always have to make my dad get them out of the shower in the morning. I just hate how they jump. Shudder.

Does anyone else vow at the beginning of the summer that they will be SO tan and go to the pool everyday and stuff and then end up going twice and coming back to school pasty as hell?
Damn, I hate the crickets in Tennessee. In Florida, we have big, grotesquely ugly greenish-yellow crickets that really freak me the hell out, but they are not that great in number and they never seem to get in the house. Here, the crickets are everywhere, and they somehow always end up in my apartment because I have a huge screen door. Anyway, I was scared to death of them at first, but they are beginning to bother me a bit less now. I can actually stomach to pick them up and flush them myself. I know that's technically murder, but...

The sun and I are not the best of friends, but I can get a tan if I am diligent enough. Usually I burn - but sunburns are one of my guilty pleasures. I am one of those few people who love getting burnt. I always feel that it gives my skin this nice, healthy glow - even though I know that sunburns are very unhealthy.

This summer will be much like most of last summer for me, work M-F, 8-5. I will be moving into MY house in June, that should be fun. There may just be a big party in East Nashville sometime near the end of June. Housewarming gifts welcome.

I enjoy the Gallatin theater because it's cheap and it's in town. How much is it, $4.00? I haven't been in over a year or so probably.
Yep it's $4 I've been to see like 3 movies there, but I wish they could build something with more rooms.. that way there will be more than one movie showing at a time and you don't have to wait week after week to see the movies.

Another thing on the list to do this summer is reading. I thought that summer reading would be over after college, but, for a teacher, it is not. Can you believe I am actually expected to read all the books I will be teaching next year? Come on, now.

Just kidding. I am actually very excited about getting into some new books. It took me for-fucking-ever to get through the first Lord of the Rings book. I thought it would be just my thing because I love the Narnia books and some other fantasy works, but it was quite laborious to me. Maybe my imagination has just been killed in the working world. Who knows.

So, while I will be buying lots of things to read, does anyone have any other fun suggestions? I am already planning on purchasing the new Dave Eggers work, but I would love any other recommendations.

I always have all these books I want to read, but I never actually get around to it. There are books I bought five years ago that I still haven't read. When it comes down to it, I would rather watch the Gameshow or Style Network or look up junk on ebay rather than read. I know that's not good, but I just feel like I never have the time to just sit down and read. I will once again try to read more this summer. I can tell you right now, it's not going to happen.

you're right......there's always the chance that i might see a truly cheesy video by one of my favorite bands.....for example, one day i was flipping thru and i saw the video for "is it love?" by gang of four. granted, it is from gang of four's worst period of their original incarnation, but it's a gang of four video nonetheless.........i saw the video for "through being cool" by devo a while back too......i also saw the video for the fall's cover of "victoria" by the kinks.........vh1 classic is great......

We read that book in my English I class this year. I really liked it and so did all my classmates. It didn't seem like a book we would normally read in class. ANYTHING is better then Mythology though. I don't know if I could read six books of it, but I am thinking about checking out the sequel.

The sequel and next two books composing the Ender quartet are a lot different. They are cool, but nothing like the first. I wish I would have read Ender's Shadow next. It is listed as the 5th book in the series but actually occurs at the same time as Ender's Game, only from Bean's perspective.

Since I am currently teaching 9th grade English (Just PM me if you ever need answers to those Romeo and Juliet study questions, Rachel wink.gif ), I feel that I should really bone up on my mythology - Edith Hamilton's book will definitely be some summer reading. I have heard a lot about Ender's Game , but have never read it. Your reviews have almost swayed me to add it to the ever growing reading list.

You should definatley add Ender's Game to the list. It's the only inclass book I have enjoyed in a really long time. I remember it having intresting discussion questions as well.

Ha, I might take you up on that Romeo and Juliet offer. I think I am set though, I rented the movie earlier this evening (the Leo DeCaprio version.. oh la la). Did I mention I was reading that or are our curriculums the same? I heard all of metro will be reading and doing the same things next year and Mythology will be required in-class reading. Poor Kids. I could squeak by with my half ass reading in the summer but they will actually have to read it.

Classic. When there's not even enough time for the Cliff's Notes....

I tried that once in high school. Instead of reading The Once and Future King, I rented the Sword and the Stone Disney movie. Bad idea.

I never read an entire book until fourth year of college, man I was missing out. Who would have thought that reading could be enjoyable?

I was/am too studious of a student. I will read for 13+ hour binges on weekends to get a book read but I will never just not read a book. The worst I've done is when I skipped the first 6 chapters in "There Eyes Were Watching God" and just hit up the Spark Notes. Of course I have been known to mess up the meanings in books by reading while distracted (my ending to "Brave New World" was pretty weird).

I actually really enjoy reading its just that I have just gotten to be the biggest lazy ass on the planet. I got into my "summer mode" about mid-December. I am just too lazy to go out and buy the book we are reading, so by the time I finally get it we are on the last chapter. This happens with every freakin book. Although, if I have gotten anything out of high school so far it would be that I learned to bullshit. Seriously, I have been taught this more than anything else. I'm sure its not intentional, but when you ask your students to write a formal essay on NOTHING then you are teaching them how to bullshit. The first paragraph will be full of strong and lengthy sentences, but its downhill from there. I have written essays and taken tests on at least 5 books this year that I haven't read and I haven't recieved below an 88 in English.. dry.gif biggrin.gif

Wow. That's impressive.

What you say about bullshitting is true. It's important that we hone that skill in high school. The ability to bullshit is a must in college. I mean, for the most part, I did the assigned work in college, and I still had to bullshit a lot on exams and especially on papers.

My priorities for the summer are: going back home to Chattanooga (Where there is air conditioning) and leaving the already muggy Athens, Field Day Fest, going out West (hopefully hiking), going to the Ocoee and swimming/hiking, reading the whole time. I'm almost done with "The Unbearable Lightness of Being," so I want to see the movie. I'm not sure what else I'll read this summer, I need some suggestions. I wish I could freakin' finish "Anna Karenina," but it's too damn long, and I always get disrupted and forget everything. Probably break out "Bottle Rocket" more than 5 times, and watch that on my own, now that I have the time to watch movies all day long.
Why would you do that?

Thank God I will be teaching Honors kids next year. I am looking forward to teaching Lord of the Flies and To Kill a Mockingbird especially.

See, I knew it. Good for you; standard classes (or should I say sub-standard?) are a joke. Yes, my class is a joke. I wish I could rename my classes what they were: babysitting for immature teenagers.

Again, this in no way refers to you, Rachel. Next year I will have your type. Maybe I can play them some Features in class. I would have tried that this year, except they all would have chanted "Give us 50 Cent" or something.

Yes, my school is far too ghetto to be in standard classes.

We actually do play music in class sometimes. We haven't in a while but at the beginning of the year we'd have like "Stevie Wonder Wednesday" or something like that.

did you watch "jeopardy!" today, token? because your quote was an answer on today's show.

i wouldn't have noticed your quote if rachel hadn't mentioned it.
Yes, I saw that!

i am sooo good at bullshitting. terrible at lying, though. Anyway, there were a couple of classes last year that i never even bought the books for and i made a B in the class.

this semester I wrote a total of 6 papers on books that i had not started or finished.

all my friends are amazed at my ability to do no work, never go to class and still pass.

i would like to add though, that i am also a supreme helper outter of those who cannot bullshit. In high school I got paid to write other peopel's papers, bc im a nerd and i think writing papers is fun. and im good at it.
this service is still offered occasisonally in college smile.gif ph34r.gif
thank you for being a friend.

If you're asking about the new required reading lists, you can get it from http://www.mnps.org

As to what she does, I'll answer that she's done The Odyssey and Romeo and Juliet as the major 9th grade works with her kids this year.
Okay, no more answering for me! I just didn't have time to respond this morning! mad.gif

My students either can't or won't read, so I haven't tried to get fancy. We cover what's in the textbook. Period. Want to know how I feel about the quality of public education? DISILLUSIONED!

Thank God I will be teaching Honors kids next year. I am looking forward to teaching Lord of the Flies and To Kill a Mockingbird especially.

Rachel, just the fact that you have bought a book or taken the trouble to rent a movie tells me you are probably in honors. Am I right?
im so sorry. so sorry. this is really a sore subject for me. i assume that you are passionate about teaching, and about teaching english [i considered it at one point myself, and no remarks about my lack of apostrophes or capitalization!]. the morons of ninth grade must crush all hope of their teachers. plus, i think that ninth grade is such a crucial time for everyone to learn to love to read if they havent already. i hated my ninth grade english teacher, but i learned to love to read earlier. i did, however, enjoy reading the bell jar in ninth grade; it definitely set a good tone for the rest of high school life, ha. i hope that you get to teach honors next year and that at least one person appreciates literature.

so, so sad.

Hey, thanks. Next year I hope to be more inspirational, as I said. I was quite excited about getting kids into literature and all that, but I really have the most unacademic, unimaginative bunch. They're too busy having sex and beating each other up to worry about studying archetypes and the attributes of the tragic hero. sad.gif

I think my students like me, but just because I'm young and somewhat aware of their culture. I doubt I've taught them much of value.

So, while I will be buying lots of things to read, does anyone have any other fun suggestions?  I am already planning on purchasing the new Dave Eggers work, but I would love any other recommendations.
You can always read The Great Gatsby again. That's what I do.
I was holding The Great Gatsby for a friend today when I got really bored and started reading it and really got into it (ended up reading about half). This is good because: now I have a book to read for that boring time after I finish my exam and next year when it's required reading I will have already read it. Yay.

this might work for you, because you can pull it off. but htis semster my roomate tried to do this and needless to saying she was doing all but pulling her hair out at the end of the term! She hardly went to class and never wanted to read the stories for her paper.... she needed to b/c she sucks at writing.
I on the other hand know I'm not the best writer in the world an put effort into my papers ...go figure aren't I a stupid crapper for that one? laugh.gif

Good for you, Rachel. That book is my very favorite, at least as far as fiction goes.

I am very impressed that you finished Gatsby in one day - not that it's a monstrosity of a book or anything, but that you were that dedicated. It rocks, does it not?

I have never read or even heard of Bless Me, Ultima, so I have no thoughts for you there. However, if you liked The Great Gatsby , you might also like some other books by writers of that generation. Hemingway is a good place to start; my favourite of his is The Sun Also Rises - don't read if bullfighting and impotence offend you!
