TOPIC: The Mix Tape (or CD) Exchange v.2.0
Posted  Monday, February 16, 2004 at 2:20 AM
Post 1 of 130
I'll briefly explain the concept for any newcomers. Mix tapes rule. Especially ones made by people with Really Good Taste (which we all obviously have). You want one, right? Of course you do! And you can have one, but you also have to make one for someone else. Everyone who participates in this "mix tape (or CD) exchange" makes one mix tape or CD for another random MB member and receives one mix tape or CD from a random MB member (the names are drawn out of Jamie Carroll's magic top hat). Absolutely anyone is welcome to participate. I'd especially love to see some of our new friends from the UK get in on the action. Anyway, the procedure is outlined below. You can check here and here for reference. Let me also just add that no one should feel intimidated about taking part in this. If you like the Features, then you obviously have a pretty good grasp of what great music is, so don't worry about what anyone here might think of your mix tape. Go ahead and put that Boston song on there. I always do.

To anyone who wants to be part of this new mix tape (or CD) exchange: e-mail me (btpatton@elvis.com) or PM me in the next week (by Sunday, February 22). In your e-mail or PM, please give your name and mailing address, as well as whether you want a tape or a CD and whether you prefer to make a tape or a CD. Shortly after the 22nd, I will e-mail or PM all of the participants back with the name and address of the person for whom you are making a mix, and also tell you who will be making a mix for you.

To anyone who never fulfilled their end of the transaction in the last mix exchange: you are not allowed to participate. I'm going to assume that everyone did do their part. If you didn't send your mix for whatever reason, e-mail or PM me and explain, and maybe we can work something out. If you were supposed to get a mix last time and your person never sent it to you, you can e-mail or PM me and tell me about it, and I'll put that person on the "banned" list.

Questions? Fire away. Otherwise, send me an e-mail or a Private Message and let's get this party started.

If this were at any other board, I'd love to participate, but since about 95% of the music I listen to is Tennessee-based, it'd all be old hat to you guys. Oh well...I guess I have enough on my plate, anyway.

Okay, so here are the "results." I didn't feel like typing out "jamiecarroll is making a tape for ray davies" 27 times, so I did it shorthand. I hope ya'll can understand it. I'll be gald to clarify if you don't. I'll be PMing everyone shortly to give you the address of the person for whom you're making a mix. As with last time, there is no specific "time limit" for how soon you have to mail the person your mix, but just be courteous. And please, no one needs to feel any pressure about making a "good enough" mix. This whole thing is totally just for fun!

I got the best of all deals out of this.

Smee, who we all know has great taste, will make me a CD, while YaDaDaDa makes our CD for Featuresgirl (He's already made it and I very much like it, by the way).

For me: all play, no work.

Well, I've struggled with whether or not to do this, but I think I'm going to go ahead and pull the trigger. I'm subbing Ghostflower in for myself on the CD side of things.

As you may or may not have noticed, I had to put myself into the mix twice because there was an odd number of people involved. I had wanted Ghostflower to be the last piece, but I never heard from him yesterday. But since I did hear from him today, I'm going to go ahead and put him in. This will only affect Flat Chop To The Throat and JustAnotherDrive. Here is the ammended lineup:

RACHEL > TAPE > IWANTELVIS
MINDYLIEU > TAPE > HAVESOMESOMA
IWANTELVIS > TAPE > JAMESRIOT
JAMIECARROLL > TAPE > RAYDAVIES
RAYDAVIES > TAPE > JAMIECARROLL
JAMESRIOT > TAPE > SEXYSADIE
SEXYSADIE > TAPE > LAUREN

HAVESOMESOMA > CD > KEITH
LAUREN > CD > BRIANW
RICHARDDAWSON > CD > BOWLOFFIRE
DIGSYSLATTERY > CD > EXLIONTAMER
BOWLOFFIRE > CD > CARLIGULA
HERMAN > CD > RICHARDDAWSON
KEITH > CD > SUPERELK
JUSTANOTHERDRIVE > CD > FUNNYWALK
CARLIGULA > CD > MINDYLIEU
SMEE > CD > TOKEN
BRIANW > CD > GARYGARYGARY
FEATURESGIRL > CD > FLATCHOPTOTHETHROAT
NEUBOY > CD > DIGSYSLATTERY
EXLIONTAMER > CD > RACHEL
GARYGARYGARY > CD > PEACEFROG
SUPERELK > CD > SMEE
YADADADA > CD > FEATURESGIRL
PEACEFROG > CD > NEUBOY
FUNNYWALK > CD > HERMAN
FLATCHOPTOTHETHROAT > CD > GHOSTFLOWER
GHOSTFLOWER > CD > JUSTANOTHERDRIVE

I will be PMing Flat Chop and JAD with the pertinent information.
Relevant: Prince, PT Anderson, Punk, Post-Punk, Purple, Party of Five, Peter Swanson, Peter Gabriel-led Genesis, "Peter Panic", Paul's Boutique, Potential Energy, Every Features MB member but me.

Once we get our mixes this year, we should post about what we liked, and possibly put the tracklistings up or at least the highlights. This could lead to a discussion of new music that some people have never heard, which is always a good thing.

All you have to do is ask, baby. But only if I can get a disc 76 minutes of people farting on a microphone. Or what do you call it? Noise/Art rock?

And for the record, Neuboy's mix didn't have any Deftones.

i actually ran into the same problem with smee. it was even harder for me to find anything about what she likes. i wouldnt want a cd of bands i like already. show me something new. though i really havent heard much of the privates yet. if you want to add them in, i wouldnt be opposed.
some bands i like:
-smashing pumpkins.
-self.
-a tribe called quest.
-ben folds five.
-jimmy eat world.
-travis.
-the features.

and dont worry about being timely. thanks.

RD, may I call you RD? I'm still working on yours. could be as long as a week. sorry. It's gonna be a double album if that's any consolation.
no problem at all, man. and yes, you may call me rd. I'm looking forward to receiving the package. hu huh huh
good news RD, I freed up some time in my busy schedule (read: I got off the couch and put down my cocoa puffs) and sent off your mix today. Two discs of pure bliss. Hope you enjoy!user posted image

Carl, I was about to drop yours in the mail the other day when I saw all this fancy "cover art" bullshit going on. Expect something hand-drawn and highly pornographic.

I indeed received a great mix-I really like the shiny silver cover of the cd. How did you achieve that? Is that spray paint?
Actually, I am a minimalist when it comes to art. I appreciate what Carl is trying to say by his lack of creativity.

I would comment on the tracklisting if I only knew...
I do believe Slack, Jimmy Eat World, DND, and The Cardigans among others made an appearance.

Has anyone received their mixes yet?
Yup.

Thanks, Smee (and perhaps exliontamer too) for such a great and lengthy mix.

My CD was two discs, 20 songs on each - 2 songs from each featured artist. I really liked that consistency.

Off the top of my head, here are some of the artists represented:

Blur
David Bowie
Gang of Four
Roxy Music
The New Pornographers
The Notwist
The Kinks
The Walkmen
The Lilys
Beulah
Clinic
Talking Heads
Death Cab for Cutie
Echo and the Bunnymen
...

And more that I can't recall right now because it's in my car.

As you can see, this is a superb piece of mix-CDing, and I'm enjoying it very much.

Thanks again, Smee!

I checked my mail for the first time in a while on Friday, so I apologize to herman for my procrastination in mail-checking.

Now for the meat...herman, you rule. great, great mix (2 CD's) of some stuff that I've been really curious about. namely...

Sweet
Franz Ferdinand (yes!)
The Stills
Snow Patrol
The Pretenders
Jesus & Mary Chain
Tom Waits

and it's very ironic that you put "Ice Age" by Joy Division on the compilation. The Warsaw version was going to be on my mix for BoF.

I really appreciate the time that you put into these CDs, herman. I am wearing them out. The Richard Dawson clips are hilarious. Thank you so very much. And though the recording industry can "eat shit and die", they will be getting some of my cash as a result of this compilation. I have some albums to buy...

Well, I was going to post a real review but since Carl demanded that I post a real review, I shall refrain. I hate it when people demand that I do something. Just like the TCBY workers demanding I give them a tip. What the hell do you get paid for??? You don't deserve a tip to hand me a cone of soft-serve!!!! Now if you make me an extra special sundae...

Ok, my happy thoughts of ice cream have caused me to post a review.
GREAT CD! Lots of music I had been wanting to hear.

1. Slack- This Had Better Be Good
2. Jimmy Eat World- A Praise Chorus
3. Ben Gibbard- Farmer Chords
4. Jetpack- Gloomy Jules
5. Eels- Dirty Girl
6. Ben Kweller- Make it Up
7. The Luxury Liners- Overbored
8. Elliott Smith- Thirteen
9. The Cardigans- Carnival
10. Verde- Addicted to Dreaming
11. Phantom Planet- Hey Now Girl
12. Radiohead- How Can You Be Sure?
13. The Privates- We Are really Rocking Now, Haven't We?
14. Stephen Malkmus- Us
15. Ben Folds Five- Emaline
16. Imaginary Baseball League- From Arkansas with Love
17. The White Stripes- We Are Going to be Friends
18. ---->You're Pretty Good Looking (For a Girl)

THANK YOU!!! Now I know I'm stepping on some toes here, but it also pisses me off that Starbucks has a tip jar. It's like, you just gave me my change and you just made my coffee for me - why does a tip need to enter that equation? Obviously, if someone goes above and beyond the call of duty or does something extra-special, I want to give them a tip. But making coffee/working the register is what you're paid an hourly wage to do. It's not like with a waiter where their hourly rate is below minimum wage.

Tip jars are showing up everywhere these days...

I had a tip jar at Baskin Robbins. While I, by no means, deserved a tip, it really made me happy when we were very busy and I was very stressed and people would put a dollar in. When you keep screwing up its nice to feel like you're doing something right. However, it may have been best with no jar at all. Then no hard feelings when you make someone seven banana splits during rush and not a penny in the jar.

I'm in favor of bands having tip jars, though. I also think it'd be cool if bands had it where you could donate through PayPal. I think Courtney Love at one time supported an organization for that or something. I don't remember. Is this more of the same from the last time we discussed this?

Waiters get 20-40%, depending on how good the service was.

Bartenders get $1 per drink.

Bellmen get $1-2 per bag. Housekeepers get $2 per night.

Pizza delivery people get $1 per pizza, but a minimum of $2.

Strippers get $5-10 per dance.

What about Sonic waitresses? I sometimes go there on my break from work (it's next to Carmike) and I usually buy a 99 cent burger. This causes the total to be $1.09 which leaves, in my opinion, too much to just say "Keep the change." Is a "just give me 50 cents back" in order here? Probably so and I've just revealed how much of a cheap skate I am.

a 100% tip is a ridiculous idea if you ask me. i suggest you keep some quarters in your car so you can hand them 125 or 150 (even though tahts a 50% tip) without the awkwardness of the change exchange.

I used to work at an ice cream store and I agree. It can be a tough gig. In between putting batches of ice cream, filling cake orders, cleaning up spilled cones, and helping spoiled kids sample every flavor in the place, a tip once in a while really helps.

News Flash: A lot of jobs are tough-- especially those that deal with people. That's why you get an hourly wage to do that job. If you're getting $2 bucks an hour, then yes, you should be getting tips (the more people you serve and the better quality of service, the more you get paid). If you're working an entry-level job that doesn't require any technical training or a college degree scooping ice cream for bratty kids, don't bitch about not getting more than $5 or $6 an hour. That's all you're worth. I worked in a kitchen at a yacht club doing all kinds of back-breaking, sweaty work and even worse-- ocassionally dealing with old rich pricks-- and I was damn happy to get that $5.50 an hour.

i really am enjoying all the tracks and the flow of them in general, but some songs-that-are-new-to-me highlights in brief are:

"race for the prize" flaming lips
"your new cuckoo" the cardigans
"a summer waiting" belle and sebastian
"mel" the preservatives
"you showed me" the turtles
"what else could it be?" lambchop

and did i mention that the artwork was adorable? thank you, mindy!

Digsy, I think that a "keep the change" with 2 dollars is in order. I think that asking for 50 cents back in that situation would be kind of rude.

No, a bartender is totally different than a barista or a TCBY employee. Bartenders earn $2.13 per hour. So they rely on tips for the majority of their income. TCBY, Baskin Robbins, and Starbucks EEs earn at least minimum wage ($5.15/hr) and in the case of Starbucks, at least $6.50/hr.

I always give the pizza guy at least $2, because I feel like a one dollar bill is kind of insulting in that situation.

Someone recently told me that car hops at Sonic only make $2.13/hour and rely on tips for income. However, I'm not 100% sure they're correct. Can anyone confirm? And do the skating car hops make more money?
I was also told this about two weeks ago...

My fellow concessionists tell me this after I don't tip the Sonic waitress. This could just be them trying to make me feel guilty, though.

He did the new Features video.
For The Way It's Meant To Be? All I can say is "wow."

Incidentally, are there still plans for a "The Beginning (week one)" video?
Ditto the "wow"
Thank you for the compliment... as for as I know "The Beginning Video" is on permanent hold. Of course that may all change.

Excellent choice, mindy!!

Bowl of Fire will be getting some Turtles action on his CDs, which are now finished. I should have the money to mail them around the end of the week.

Herman, I will be sending you the same mix CDs in thanks for your excellent work on the CDs that you sent me.

Our mixed CDs were somehow, inexplicably, related. I got two songs from twenty artists including komeda, gang of four, and roxy music. How did this happen?

Once again, smee. Mine kicked ass. Thank you much.

I'm just about ready for this mixed tape/Cd thing to happen again.

Jamie C, you are a goddess for arranging all of this!

OK...it's time for me to play enforcer. If you have not made and sent the mix that you agreed to make and send, shame on you! Get off of your ass and do it right now! If you haven't gotten a mix yet, feel free to call out whomever was supposed to send it.

Also, I know that this is VERY belated, but I want to publicly say that the mix tape that Ray Davies sent me was off the chain! I loved it!

i suppose i'm far too late for any mix-tape action...will there be another one forthcoming? i can make the hell out of some mix-tapes. of course, i'm a bit of a music-nazi, so whatever tape i get would likely wind up being chucked from a car window or hammered into a fine powder, depending on how many songs by the darkness are on it...

Yep, I was lucky enough to get Ray's the 1st time & then Sadie's the 2nd time- Best Mix Tape Making Couple EVER! Special props for their ability to create a great flow of songs that are similar enough to make sense but different enough to stay interesting.

Thanks. Sorry again for it being 12 years late. The only Papas Fritas album I really like is "Buildings and Grounds." "Point" is my favorite Cornelius album, but Fantasma is really good too. Glad you're enjoying it.

iTunes now has an iMix feature where you can make mixes based on songs in their huge(ish) library and post them. All the MB members with iTunes access could make mixes and put them up there for everyone to skim through and download.

Just an idea. I have a couple already up. My user name is digsy.
