TOPIC: Very Very Bad News
Posted  Monday, November 29, 2004 at 11:23 PM
Post 1 of 99
Ladies and gentelmen, it is with great regret and sadness that I must bring you this news, but it must be done. The Red Rose has officially closed its doors for good. As of about 11pm on Monday, November 29th, 2004, they have officially gone out of business.

By a strange twist of fate, I, along with a very close friend of mine, had the honor of being the official last customer of this great establishment.

To be honest, it is indeed quite amazing that it stayed open as long as it did. The place has been consistently losing money for several years now. The lady who manages it (whose name escapes me at the moment) has poured all of her heart and soul (and money) into it, and simply can't afford to lose anymore money.

It is a sad day for all of Murfreesboro and anyone who ever enjoyed the great coffee, the warm atmosphere, or left with their ears ringing thanks to the glorious acoustics of ceramic tile.

After the chaotic managerial change that didn't really seem to mean anything in the end, it was just a matter of time before the doors closed. I am sad to see it go. The first time I went there was on my first date with Token. I have many other happy memories of going there, but like all good things, it must come to an end.

I think it fitting that the last performance at the Red Rose was Slack playing an acoustic set of old favorites. I just wish Ben had been there (although Chris did call him during the set).

i agree--i thought something really awful had happened with the band or something...and at the very worst, it's very bad news. i'm not sure if it qualifies as very, VERY bad news.

the red rose seemed like a pretty cool place, though, and it's a terrible shame they've got to close...

I had their carrot cake once and it was good. I saw a few shows there. When I first go to Murfreesboro, I really looked forward to going there, it was a big change from New Johnsonville, TN....I've lost interest over the last year or so, but it still sucks that people are out of jobs and bands have lost another venue to play.
That's so NA.

that lady who cooks (i guess it was the owner) the food there was a bitch to me once. but the last time i was there i ordered a vanilla steamer and the guy only charged me for milk, so that was cool. and although it was ingenious, i really didnt like that lame guy that worked there who always booked his band with the big names (ahem deerhoof).

Agreed.

I stopped going there a long time ago .

I got sick of the same booking guy always smirking and booking his band on good shows .

I wouldn't piss that dude out if he were on fire.

Harsh words i know .

I told him this in person.

Maybe i am angry and need a hug.

I'm pretty upset. I want some beer cheese soup. I want a Red Rose plain bagel with herb cream cheese. I want a Go Nuts on the rocks. I would also like a Spinach Deluxe. I will have to learn to live without these things, I suppose.

But, I'm not too surprised it closed. After the first fiasco, this isn't too surprising. I happened to go on Sunday to get some soup and a bagel to go. I wish I had known they were closing. I would have stocked up on some soup and cream cheese, and ordered a Go Nuts.

I personally think Tyler's a great guy and an even better musician (when he wants to be). But, what do I know? I've only known him for about 6 years.

How many people that hate Tyler have actually had a conversation with him? I'm just curious.

Sorry about posting in the wrong forum.... didn't know there were such strict rules...
but yes Tyler is the guy with the big glasses and tight pants. I don't know him, therefore I cannot judge him... but I try not judge people even if I do know them anway....
I just loved the Red Rose because of the atmosphere and the memories I have of many good shows. They were also very kind to local artists and photographers.

i usually just judge people on how lame they seem. and i cant remember anyone really proving me wrong about someone, or themself. but on the rare occasion that i do come around and try to be a lame-seeming-persons friend, they end up more lame than what i originally thought. so im giving up on people that seem lame. im not making enemies (anymore), im just not making friends. deal with it.

Well yes i have known him that long if not longer .

I have also seemed to hold a conversation with him alot in the past .

But it always ends up with him saying shit behinds someones back .

When he praises them in person.

I have no time for shit like that .Hence i told him i don't care for him at all .

Maybe the Piss /Fire thing was extreme but it was the only metaphor i could find to explain my distaste for the guy.

Well we obviously let you get away with your green type...

There aren't "strict rules" per se, but there are categories for such stuff as this. Say we started a a topic called "STD's" in the Features subheading and then talked about the itchiest... don't you think Mel and Katie would be a bit frightened to click on that fearing one of there beloved is crazy with the syphilis?

You seriously gave me a scare... my heart was in my throat when I clicked on that. After all you've interviewed Matt and stuff....

fwiw

the tyler guy has always been really nice to me. and as far as i know he's been nice to everyone i play music with. so i can't say anything about him personally other than that.

booking his band on all the good shows, however, is a pretty hilarious "only in murfreesboro" gaffe. it is, as a microcosm, why i'm not at all saddened that the red rose closed down. i don't know, call me a nashville elitist or whatever, but every time i go in there and hear about all these (shitty) bands that all the kids out there love, all i can think is "much ado about nothing."

it just seems like (*sound of my rocking chair creaking*) back when i lived in murfreesboro, there was a much more diverse scene, with people who went to shows who knew a lot about various genres of music. Now, its emo emo emo emo emo or whatever variation thereof. and thats all anyone out there cares about. i think its pretty telling that ibl is (or was five minutes ago) the biggest band in the boro, while i don't remember anyone in nashville really getting excited about them.

just my opinion. i still have a lot of friends in murfreesboro, some you could even say are still in "the scene". so its not like i hate murfreesboro and all the people there.

* i will amend and say that i did appreciate the red rose giving local visual artists a forum. that was cool, and will be missed by the artists, i'm sure.

That's because your impression of "anyone in nashville" is a bunch of elitist music snobs who revel in obscure art rock. Luckily, IBL is not that.

Glossary, Velcro Stars, DestroyDestroyDestroy, IBL, Aireline, THE FEATURES, FLOZ, Casio Casanova, The Eggrollers, Feable Weiner, Slack-----I don't think that's bad for diversity.
I don't think that emo is all people care about here, either. Maybe the 16 year olds, but hey, you get that everywhere.
And I do believe that IBL has sold out and packed a lot of clubs in Nashville, just because it isn't your thing doesn't mean that everyone else passes on them.
I think that the red rose was a great place to play, too. But the closing was a long time coming. Hopefully a new place will pop up soon.

If I remember correctly, it was "cool" to live in Murfreesboro between the years of 1995-2000. So take the ultimate Murfreesboro hipster test.
Total up your score:

If you lived here when Willy T lived here, give yourself 5 points.
If you were his roommate, add another 10.
If you went to a party at Mahaffey's house, score 5.
If you had a record deal with Electra for one year add 30.
If you dated a member of Caesar's Glass Box, 10 points.
If you shopped at Micky's Music and More, 5 points.
If you worked at Coffee Tea and Me, 5 points.
If you actually went to a show there, take away 5 points.
If you attended a Spongebath Halloween show, 5 points.
If you went swing dancing at Jonathans, 5 points.
If you saw that dude from Failure at the Boro that one night, 10 points.
If you saw The Donnas open up for Glossary at the Boro, 20 points.
If you still own your Daphne's Operation shirt, 5 points.
If you bought your copy of The Features E.P. at Digital Planet, 5 points.
If you ever called in to the Miles Longer and Naked Dave show on WMTS, 5 points.
If you saw Eddy play at the Boro, take away 10.
If you ever roomed with Bingham Barnes add 15.
If you went to the Red Rose before there were rock shows there add 5.
If you ever went to one of those "Thunder 94 Live" nights at Jonathans add 15.
If you bought pot at the Chameleon Cafe, 10 points.
If you were at that Java Christ show on the knoll, 5 points.
If you played in Slump take away 25.
If you saw Man or Astroman at Sebastians add 5.
If you interned at Spongebath, jackpot-30 points.
If you saw a show at The Pit Stop, 10 points.
If you ever had a beer at Smurfs, 5 points.
If you thought Holtzclaw was funny, take away 10.
Add five points for everytime you've seen the guy in Dr. Gonzo get naked.
Add five points for every Murphy Center show you either worked at or went to.
If you went to the Soul Coughing show on the knoll add 5.

If you scored 0-30 points, you need a good "Noggin Poundin"!
If you scored 35-70 points, you're a true member of the Vegetable Kingdom.
75 points or more and you're Soaking in the Center of the Universe!

True, but is Glossary, The Features, or FLOZ really adored by the students anymore? Are they making new fans or are their crowds the same old folks from back in the day? I'm not trying to slag on you or your friends, Ben (i like Slack, always have). I wasn't referring to the bands, but the crowds...and i'm just calling it as i see it. I don't see diverse crowds like I used to see when i was living there. I see emo kids. I guess thats why i cited the IBL example.

Since I don't live in Murfreesboro and I'm not even a fraction as involved in the scene as I used to be, I'm more than willing to admit that I may be, and probably am wrong. I'm just voicing a trend that I (and others) have sorta noticed on my intermittent trips out there.

"Quote"

Ouch. sad.gif
I do have to mention though that IBL does associate with/perform with/collaborate with Death Comesto Matteson, whose frontman doesn't exactly have the best reputation in town precisely because he is an arrogant eltist snob who thinks he is God's gift to local music.

I scored 35 on the quiz. i lost 5 because i went to a show at coffee, tea, and me. however, Ben you're going to have to make the call on this, I went to Jonathan's with people who went swing dancing, but i personally didn't swing dance. I added 5 for it anyway. If I had to have danced to get the 5 points, then my score would go to thirty and into the Noggin Poundin category. You make the call...

And oh yeah, i forgot, I was AT the Boro the night the Donnas opened for Glossary, but I didn't SEE the Donnas. They had already played by the time I got there. Does that count??

I know a lot of students like the Victor Furious, and I see Kixelslyd(?) bumper stickers on a lot of cars.

A lot of people were at The Features show at MTSU a while ago, but a lot of them were from Nashville, including most of you guys.

I'm really out of touch with the student body...I don't know. I live here, but I usually stay in. I like the people in Nashville better.

Same result. I thought Holtzclaw was funny so I lose 10. But I saw 1 show at Murphy Center and was at the Soul Coughing show on the knoll. So it evens back out.

and why the hell is roadie always getting stuck with the snob label? is it because he is in character? does anyone think that eric williams is a snob, or scott martin? or is it because he wears clothes that actually fit him instead of baggy band tshirts and cargo shorts? maybe its because he has an extensive vinyl collection, even though he does work day and night for money to listen to new music so that he can try to make objective opinions about other bands? or maybe hes a snob because he is so fucking nice to everyone. actually, i just convinced myself. roadie, youre an elitist music snob who needs to learn to like imaginary baseball league and live in denial about how bad they are like the rest of us.

oh and i just remembered that ive got to get to target for some new mossimo cargo shorts and black boots. i surely dont want to make the same mistake that roadie has and lose any humble, nonjudgemental friends.

but alas, i've conquered that town.  hell, i was kicked out of all the cool bars before any of you dumbasses started going to them.  but i was also in murfreesboro way before it was cool to be in mufreesboro. ("like OMG, i'm SO gonna go to MTSU!?!?!?")

be for real for a minute, losers

I came out with 120 points and here is how :

If you lived here when Willy T lived here, give yourself 5 points.
If you went to a party at Mahaffey's house, score 5.
If you attended a Spongebath Halloween show, 5 points.
If you saw that dude from Failure at the Boro that one night, 10 points.
If you still own your Daphne's Operation shirt, 5 points.

If you ever called in to the Miles Longer and Naked Dave show on WMTS, 5 points.

If you bought pot at the Chameleon Cafe, 10 points.
If you interned at Spongebath, jackpot-30 points.
Add five points for everytime you've seen the guy in Dr. Gonzo get naked. 3 times
If you went to the Soul Coughing show on the knoll add 5.

That's definitely the funniest thread topic change I've ever read. Bravo, you two, bravo.

I'm assuming the Holtzclaw on the test is the MTSU English professor (there are so many Holtzclaw's out there). Did his hair move when other people had him?

i scored 85.
most of the bands listed were pretty bad and i only counted seeing "that guy" from dr gonzo naked once.

i would've gotten points for the following, and they should've been on the quiz:

if you've ever been injured by jimmy (from jack) while he was intoxicated. extra points for drawing blood.

if you've ever driven all the way out to a commune to babysit nathan's (from dr gonzo) son.

if you remember when jason from daphne's operation worked at petro's in the mall.

if you knew that the chick in holtzclaw used abortion as a form of birth control.

if your first drunken experience was at squeezers.

if you thought spongebath sucked.

if you remember when avalanche was 15.

if you remember UP. major points for actually going inside.

if you ever went to the red rose when you were young enough to be grounded from going to the red rose.

*i'll add if you remember when walmart used to be in the mall.

*edit* Oh, and as far as the red rose is concerned, yeah they've had cool bands there, but so did Sebastian's and I don't miss that either. As a person that actually cares about sound and personal space, the red rose was pretty much my least favorite place to see or play shows. And whatever happened to all those people that were so horrified when they changed management or whatever and refused to ever set foot in there again? That boycott didn't last long.

i would insinuate that if you would have asked him a week ago, carl would have said that roadie was his friend (to look cool). which goes to show you that when someone has a certain opinion that is different from theirs, even the most desperate people will give up a friend.

i like carl. always have. always will. carl is a good guy and a good friend.

i appreciate the support and compliments from everyone. but, without getting into specifics, there are people around here who have very good reason to not believe in my "nice guy" thing. i am ashamed of what i did to cause this. i can only assume that the hostility directed at me earlier in this thread is a part of it.

in my own defense, i was and will continue to be 100% honest, even though i was told not to be.

now, i'd like to see these petty arguments drop and kept off the message board. i'm not blaming anyone (except myself) for anything.

To say that I choose my friends based on whether or not I will look cool is probably the most riduculous and unsubstantiated accusation against my character that I've ever heard. I hesistate to admit that, however, because, being the petty bitch you are, I'm sure it gets you off.

As Roadie clearly stated, he and I are, and continue to be, friends. That has nothing to do with the music he listens to or plays-- it comes from the fact that, after several casual encounters, I estimate him to be a pretty genuine, well-meaning guy. For the record, Roadie, my hostility was based on the fact that I felt a band that I happen to love (with at least one member who I consider a very close friend and one of the nicest guys I know) was being unfairly called out. I can relate to your assesment of the scene in general, but I feel like it was a bad idea to call out a band by name-- especially a quality one like IBL.

Stuff that happens on a messageboard will never cause me to no longer consider someone my friend. That happened once, but I'm much better off. She was a petty bitch anyway.

If you played in Slump take away 25 -- that´s brilliant. Ross....I usually don´t slag people but he is a joke. I had a good time in the glory days ´95-2000. I don´t think it will ever get better, but that´s OK.

I won´t mention how many points I racked up but I would venture to guess it is more than most. Do you get extra points if you played pool and then went to waffle house with the guy from Failure (Ken Andrews).

In case you've missed any of the exhilarating action, here's a recap of Carligula vs stopforme: The Ultimate Showdown!

Round 1:
- The Red Rose closes in Murfreesboro
- stopforme says that Tyler (Red Rose booking agent) is lame and that she doesn't like him, because he books his band to open when big acts play there.
- Avalanche agrees that he is lame. He explains how much he doesn't like him.
- Carl steps in to defend Tyler.

Round 2:
- fstop apologizes for posting the topic in the wrong forum.
- fstop adds..."I try not judge people even if I do know them anway....", in reference to others passing judgement on Tyler.
- stopforme responds by declaring that she doesn't want to make friends or enemies anymore, but she will continue to judge people by how lame they seem.
- Avalanche responds to Carl's defense of Tyler. He doesn't like Tyler because he is a shit talker.
- roadie posts that Tyler was always nice to him; however, he agrees with stopforme that having to see Tyler's band play before big acts was lame.
- It would seem that a final judgement has been reached: Tyler is an ok guy (Carl and roadie), but is prone to do lame things (stopforme, Avalanche, and roadie) and have lame parties (Miss September).

Round 3:
- roadie redirects the conversation to his stance on the Murfreesboro music scene. "i don't know, call me a nashville elitist or whatever, but every time i go in there [Red Rose] and hear about all these (shitty) bands that all the kids out there love, all i can think is much ado about nothing." He has taken an open shot at the Murfreesboro music scene.
- He continues to say that Murfreesboro has a much less diverse music scene than it once did. He also implies that the people who go to shows in Murfreesboro don't have diverse taste in musical genres. Though, there were people like that when he lived there. He says Murfreesboro "kids" only like emo. He says that it is "pretty telling" of Murfreesboro's music scene when IBL is their "it" band. He goes on to say, "i don't remember anyone in nashville really getting excited about them".
- roadie then states "just my opinion. i still have a lot of friends in murfreesboro, some you could even say are still in the scene. so its not like i hate murfreesboro and all the people there.", which at least somewhat covers his ass for his judgemental post.

Round 4:
- Carl comes to IBL's defense (it is well-known that he likes IBL) and fires back at roadie with "That's because your impression of 'anyone in nashville' is a bunch of elitist music snobs who revel in obscure art rock. Luckily, IBL is not that." Keep in mind that roadie already acknowledged the elitism in his remarks. However, Carl does not call him an elitist. He calls roadie's music scene "elitist".
- Ben Slack defends Murfreesboro. And seems to (in a very polite way) correct the incorrect judgements in roadie's statement. He then creates a Murfreesboro quiz, which conjures found memories of the Murfreesboro music scene's past.
- roadie responds to Carl by saying that IBL is associated with Peter Matteson, who IS "in fact", an "arrogant eltist snob who thinks he is God's gift to local music." What this has to do with anything...I still don't know.

Round 5:
- stopforme wonders why Carl comes to the shows performed by the "bunch of elitist music snobs who revel in obscure art rock", if he doesn't like it. A valid point. She proceeds to get very personal and superficial in her attacks on Carl.
- Superelk vaguely disagrees that roadie is "so fucking nice to everyone", as stopforme had put it.
- Features Girl says that roadie is one of the nicest fucking people.
- Keith says that Carl has never claimed to like Character.
- stopforme insinuates that Carl only has a friendship with roadie to "look cool". She also implies that roadie is only friends with Carl because he is a nice person.

Round 7:
- It becomes apparent that some of the messageboard ladies have a crush on roadie.
- roadie defends his friendship with Carl.
- Carl responds directly to stopforme's taunting, calling her a "petty bitch".
- stopforme tries to explain how much she hates Carl.
- Ben Slack hates it that the Red Rose is closed.
- Carl defends his freedom to wear cargo shorts, and notes that stopforme is alone in her "deep hatred" for him.

My advice to prevent further arguments...
roadie - When it might seem elitist, rethink writing it.
stopforme - Carl will always be lame. Get used to it. And stop looking for fights. Let shit go.
Carl - Smoke pot

Nice work, Rob. Maybe we could get your post pinned to the beginning as a guide of sorts.

Oh, and I wanted to ask: will smoking pot make me look cool? Will everyone like me more if I smoke pot? If so, then how can I say no?

I understand your side. I just don't agree with the way that you handled your delivery. Your friend put himself in a position for Carl to say that. I don't doubt that roadie can answer for himself.

The only reason that I care about any of this is that you and Carl are both kind and caring people. You don't have to be friends. I don't expect you to be. However, I do expect you to be a bigger person than one who would reduce their argument to petty high school taunting. It's nothing like the stopforme that I enjoy being around.

- roadie redirects the conversation to his stance on the Murfreesboro music scene.  "i don't know, call me a nashville elitist or whatever, but every time i go in there [Red Rose] and hear about all these (shitty) bands that all the kids out there love, all i can think is much ado about nothing."  He has taken an open shot at the Murfreesboro music scene.
you're right. that comment was boorish and out of line.

"Quote"
- He continues to say that Murfreesboro has a much less diverse music scene than it once did.  He also implies that the people who go to shows in Murfreesboro don't have diverse taste in musical genres.  Though, there were people like that when he lived there.  He says Murfreesboro "kids" only like emo.  He says that it is "pretty telling" of Murfreesboro's music scene when IBL is their "it" band.  He goes on to say, "i don't remember anyone in nashville really getting excited about them".
- roadie then states "just my opinion. i still have a lot of friends in murfreesboro, some you could even say are still in the scene. so its not like i hate murfreesboro and all the people there.", which at least somewhat covers his ass for his judgemental post.

right. but you forget that i reiterate in a later post that this is just something that i have observed over the past few years. it is entirely possible that i am wrong, and Ben made good points to counter my view. Its just my impression. for the third time though, for what its worth, i am not alone in this observation. i know that, like it or not, when the murfreesboro scene comes up in conversations that i am frequently in, the topic isn't discussed very long and it usually ends with something along the lines of "ahh, its all emo bands...". (this is unfortunate because the boro has had and still has some great bands). Again, whether or not this is true is obviously debatable, and i shouldn't have acted like i was an authority on the topic. But, i'm confident that i'm not the only one who has gotten this impression lately. The IBL point was made by me as an outside observer. i know they haven't played in a while, but up to their recent sabbatical, i was under the impression that they were "the most talked about band" in murfreesboro and were packing in crowds. I made the point because i thought, and still think, that this does indeed lend credence to what i have observed.

well i took it as a reference to my friends (some perhaps in bands), bandmates, managers of bands :-), and people i see at shows...the people i surround myself with that would give me my impression of the music scene in nashville. i think only a few of these people deserve the "music snob" tag. the rest, and ya'll know many of their names, do not deserve to be called elitists. while i don't think carl was trying to slag any of our mutual friends, i don't know if you should be giving him a pass here, r.d.

i was trying to say that actually, its possible that IBL does have elitist friends. Mr. Matteson does not have what I would call a "humble musician" reputation. Of course, labels like that could be put on anyone...so take it with a grain of salt.

I think the main difference between Murfreesboro & Nashville bands is that Murfreesboro is a college town, with mostly college students getting together and playing around for fun. There are a few exceptions to this, but this is obviously the majority.

Nashville, on the other hand (Music City USA), has bands that want to maybe, perhaps, try and make a living through music - they may go to schools in Nashville, but they aren't necessarily "college bands" because Nashville has way more shit to offer even a semi-serious musician.

I say this not as a musican, but as one who attends music shows. The only bands I see in Murfreesboro are the ones that my friends are in. The ones I see in Nashville are the ones that I think are good, whether I know them or not.

That would be a damn shame if you stopped posting, man. Especially when we're all just giving our honest opinions here. I honestly didn't feel any true hostility from either side until Stopforme "came to your defense". I admit that my comment was extremely harsh, but I think that you and I both know that I'm rarely ever serious on any messageboard. So, if I angered you (or any of your other stupid snobby friends*), I really am sorry. Is this (from jc) official? I've been kind of out of the loop. I really really hope it is not, just as I really really hope you won't be leaving either. I think you tried that once before a couple of years ago...I feel like the negative energy peaked around the election, which was kind of parallel to the state of the nation, in fact. It seems to me that in both cases, people are lately better able to explain themselves rather than just snap at each other. The nastiness actually seems more substantiated lately (even if I don't agree with it), not just arbitrary. So maybe it's not all sunny all the time, but I think we're generally getting better at backing up what we say and being held accountable for our words. Esp. when we have RD on transcription duty.

This post is why I will always like you, Carl. I read the last paragraph and laughed out loud. Which was very much needed on my end. I think as we type all these smarmy posts, we know that its silly to spend so much energy on negativity, but we do it anyway. Sometimes the subtle, humorous reminders, like yours here, work better than the blunt ones. So for that i thank you.

And aw shucks, I wasn't looking for attention by considering retirement. It wasn't caused by anyone or anything. I've just realized that this has too easily become an outlet for the not-so-diplomatic side of me, and i don't like it. So, this may be my last post, at least for a long while.
