TOPIC: Academy Awards '04
Posted  Tuesday, December 9, 2003 at 10:05 PM
Post 1 of 88
When do the nominees come out? january or february? What/who do you think/know will be nominated?

My guess is Mystic River since it's less Hollywood than others, but still more Hollywood than they (the actors and Eastwood) would like to admit.

Also, Tim Robbins HAS to get nominated b/c the academy has a freakin' orgasm over anyone who plays a mentally disturbed/challenged/traumatized person (tom hanks --> forrest gump, russell crowe --> a beautiful mind, etc.), plus, he's someone (with his career) that they would love to nominate.

I don't know what's going to happen with LOTR, I guess it all depends on Return of the King, which looks/sounds like it will be the best of all 3. I can't think of any others at the moment...
Why would you do that?

Noms are normally mid-late January. Mystic is my surefire pick as well, and of course LotR will take a ton. I imagine Return of the King takes best pic so that they can recognize the project as a whole. I just hope it doesn't win too many awards for work that it already won awards for in the last two years.

That's right folks, if it wins cinematography again, I'll kill somebody. I'll never forget that it took away from the vastly superior Amelie and Man Who Wasn't There. Never.

Solid, Ceeze. Solid.

And you know, your timing is perfect, because I was just sitting here wondering who had been nominated for Best Anal-Themed Video of 2003.
Relevant: Prince, PT Anderson, Punk, Post-Punk, Purple, Party of Five, Peter Swanson, Peter Gabriel-led Genesis, "Peter Panic", Paul's Boutique, Potential Energy, Every Features MB member but me.

I agree that LotR will probably take home two of the major categorys (I'm leaning towrds Best Picture and Best Director). I also think that Bill Murray is a definite nomination (at least) for Lost in Translation and I'm pretty sure it'll get a Best Original Screenplay nod as well. Finding Nemo will win the Best Animated Feature, but I also think that it should be nominated for Best Picture as well. I'm pretty sure that with the addition of the Best Animated Feature category, this means that it can't be nominated in Best Picture. I hope that's not true...

I don't really see *good* movies so I can't actually go by what I've seen. I can assume that Cold Mountain and Last Samurai will get a lot of nominations because they are period pieces.

What is with people thinking Lost In Translation was such a great film? Bill Murry of course was fantastic and probably deserves best actor for it...but he was the movie's saving grace.

The pacing was horrible and i think the shots of Japan, while beautiful, were way too common and drawn out. I love the music videos and photography Sophia Coppola has done but her movie was blah, in my opinion.

Personally, im hoping for awards for Finding Nemo (best film of the year) and Bubba Ho-Tep...well i can dream anyway.

Eh, I loved it. I thought it was hilarious and made me think just enough that it didn't hurt (Lord knows I hate thinking during a movie!). I thought it was really well written and well acted by both Scarlett Johannson and Bill Murray. It's all personal opinion, though.

Lost in Translation is definitely going to get noms. Personally, I think it deserves it only for Actor and Actress, but that's me.

Focus isn't sure how they'll run Scarlett. They think she won't stand a chance against Nicole from Cold Mountain and they are thinking of running her as a "supporting actress," which is bullshit, but where she'd clean up. I dunno how I feel about it.

I totally agree there Wiyum. I love this time of the year, every freaking trade mag has those "for your consideration" ads. I always get a kick out of the ones in American Cinematographer. The studios that think their man has a shot buys full pagers, then all the rest are half or quarters to appease egos. For your consideration Joe Camera Guy, The Fast and the Furious 2.

I don't think they'll allow SJ to be run as supporting. It's her movie. Her ass in the first shot. Her pain we're supposed to feel. BM deserves the only nom for that movie.

Absolutely- two of my all-time favorite movies visually. Yeah, LOTR is breathtaking because it's so epic but it wasn't nearly as unique as the other two. God, I loved everything about those movies.

I like Scarlett but she's not any big talent. I think she's especially good at playing average people in a true to life way. Which is why it seems like anyone could play her roles.

Granted, when I saw the LotR special features, I realized how much more was captured optically in-camera, and how the forced perspective worked to make the Hobbits small, and I have to say that aspect of it is amazing and worthy of some manner of award. Not above either of those two in my opinion, but LotR also had some nasty problems on the negative that indicate laziness and lack of precision or control. The eye lines of characters were re-adjusted digitally. Shots out of focus were apparently refocused digitally. I found the color to be less uniform, even between shots in the same scene, than it is in most big budget movies. So while they did some amazing stuff, they didn't get the basics right in camera, and that just doesn't sit well with me.

I thought the scaling, while admirable to do in cam, was also off. LotR is the first movie I actually walked out of since I worked in a theater 15 years ago. I know I will be brutalized, but I just didn't think it was worthy of the hype.

It was great.
I got the chance to see a sneak preview the closing night of the St. Louis International Film Festival, i'm not sure if it is in full release yet. It maintains connection to the book quite well, and character development is strong. If you liked the book, def. check it out.

digsy-- I'll go along with Actor/Actress for Lost in Translation but Screenplay??!!?? 5 pages of dialogue in the whole damn thing.

And I am a huge fan of "less is more" and extended silences.

imho, Lost in Translation is a light, abstract puff piece, and there is nothing wrong with that. Johannson and Murray hold it together and keep it interesting, so I think a case could be made that they deserve nods. Especially Murray.

Outside of that I don't see any deserving nominations for Lost in Translation.

It just seems like films like this get nominated in this category. It won't win, but I can see it being nominated.

And lack of dialogue doesn't mean it isn't worthy of a nomination or lessen its chances...

But I'm not educated in the ways of the film, so I don't really know what I'm talking about.

Well I would contend that those you mentioned, Keith, are dramas that had comedic elements. I would certainly call the humor in American Beauty very dark at its core and ultimately it's a story about the main character who's dead, reflecting on his life. Not the stuff of your typical comedy, if you go by strict film genres.

Roadie -- there's more to a screenplay than dialogue, otherwise that script would be a stageplay. Obviously the best sceenplays are those that combine all elements of cinema, from wonderful characters, great dialogue, to vivid, fully realized scenes that all contribue to the forward momentum of the story. I think for those reasons Lost in Translation should not be given the nom. I still think it's a wonderful film, but it's just not what I'd considered up to Oscar nomimation snuff.

I agree that a screenplay need not be dialogue heavy, I just don't care for Lost in Translation's script, as such. It is a film where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, and for me, one of the weaker parts that makes that possible is the writing. The performances, on the other hand, tip the scales considerably.

And I'd say As Good As It Gets was a straight-up comedy. Dramatic elements, yes, but the film is a comedy, in ways that American Beauty was not.

Guys,

Jeeeeeeez!!! Talk about preaching to the chior. Of course there is more to a screenplay than dialogue. Theme, allegory, motifs, pacing, setting etc. being big ones in Lost in Translation.

Funny, the text in my (rough draft) screenplays are 3/4 direction notes and 1/4 dialogue. I understand wassup.

I can see how my last post came off as off-the-cuff.

Well, I was right about Ms. Coppola. This was the most fun I've had watching the Oscars in a while (barring the studying/character analysis I was doing during the commercials). I guess this is because I love the LOTR trilogy and it won everything (and rightfully so in my mind). I really wish that Bill Murray had won, though. Yeah, Sean Penn was amazing. I haven't seen Mystic River but the clips they showed proved that he did a great job. But Bill would have been a long time coming and I still think that a subtle performance like Bill's was as good as Sean Penn's. I was also very happy that Renee Zellwegger finally won. "Ain' no man bed'er'n me."

And man, what a bunch of lovely freaks those LOTR people are. Peter Jackson's wife (?) looks like Meg White and an apple tree after getting caught in a tornado. Snap. Really, the fact that a fantasy film won that many awards just makes me so happy. I wish this revelation had come earlier and then maybe the Emmys could have been swayed. I just hope that more critics and movie-goers/tv viewers learn to "look past the wizards" as Mr. Jackson said.

my vote for best dressed was diane lane. renee in second [even though shes looking chubby for bridget jones II], and julianne moore in third. i was not impressed at all by charlize theron but i thought stuart townsend looked great. nicole kidman in chanel didnt impress me that much. i thought scarletts dress was beautiful, but contrary to melissa and joan, i didnt feel like it fit her on top. i still want to kick jennifer garner in the face even though i liked her vintage valentino. liv tyler looked great in black givenchy, minus the glasses. samantha morton kicked my ass. uma thurman gets worst dressed and worst actress of all time.
i thought it was great how everyone was predicting "color" and so joan, melissa, and all of the reporters wore like, 3-tone weird dresses and everyone showed up in white, silver, gold, or nude.

I was sad that neither Bill nor Johnny won best actor, but I expected Sean Penn to win anyway. I probably would have enjoyed the show more if I had actually seen more than a few of the movies, and if my TV wasn't scrambled so that I could actually form an opinion on people's dresses.

That pirate movie sucked and Johnny Depp should be in a good movie when he wins his Oscar(s).
Yes, I really don't see what all the fuss was about Pirates. Will somebody please explain why this was such a great movie? I thought it was just awful, despite its good cast.

I don't think anybody really stood out this year...nothing absolutely spectacular in my opinion.
I agree, ever since Janets boob incedent every one was extra careful and that made them have to throw out the truly stunning outfits.

Unlike the Grammys, the one thing I really like about the Oscars is that hardly anyone thanks God. They thank the people who really got them there, like their lawyers.
That's so NA.

what do you think has stood out in the past [3 years]?
Well, off the top of my head, Renee's yellow dress at the 2001 Oscars stood out a lot. I loved the dress, and that canary yellow wouldn't work on a lot of people, but it looked adorable on her. Even though that was when she looked sickly thin, she still looked really good. That's just off the top of my head, though. I'm sure there are others.

why does zellweiger continue to wear sleeveless dressing even though she looks like shit in them?

anyway, the oscars were prettty boring this year. here were the few highlights...

sean penn's "if there's one thing that actors know, other than there weren't any wmds, it's that there is no such thing as best in acting."

the krumpet guy thanking his boyfriend

macnamara's comparison of vietnam to iraq

I like how Charlize Theron made sure to thank her make-up artist for "transforming" her into her character..."Without you, I would have never been able to shed the beautiful shell that I am and the Academy would never have gone into ecstasies over me looking like Eric Stoltz in Mask."

The only things I can say about the show was, "Why was Oprah Winfrey there?" What the hell has she done lately? The next thing is that I was watching Entertainment Tonight (yes, I know, I'm going to stop) and that jerk Kojo was talking to Peter Jackson and he practically shoved him out of the way to ask Sandra Bullock "Who did your highlights?" What a prick!

1. it's creepy when people i don't know call me by name. if you're going to be my stalker or internet stalker, you'll have to wait in line. if not then call me by my screenname, k?
2. i don't need to calm down. some people can't handle criticism or even the fact that people (on the internet) don't like them. i'm not one of those people. if you have time between recess and naptime, you should look up some old posts and get a clue.

Wow, and all of this shit started because of a fucking Oprah comment! The funny thing is, I could care less, if you think I am your"stalker" or "one of those people who can't handle criticism." That's your delusion and please don't flatter yourself. And quite frankly, I honestly don't want to look up old posts because I don't really want anything to do with you. I hope you have a wonderful day. I'm going back to recess and nap time!
