TOPIC: Great Show at the Red Rose tonight

Okay, I know some people get pissed when people use this messageboard to promote other bands, but I just want everyone out there to know that there will be a great show at the Red Rose tonight.

Forget Cassettes is the new project of Beth and Doni from Fair Verona (R.I.P.). Beth is on guitar and vocals and Doni is on drums and keys. I can't convey how great this duo's performance is, but I can say that their music would be considered indie with a splash of math rock. It wavers from soft and pretty to deafeningly hard-hitting. Doni is hands-down the hardest drummer I've ever seen and the switch-ups he does with the drums and keyboard are simply amazing. As always, Beth's vocals are agressive yet beautiful.

Mates of State are organ/synth heavy and very vocally driven. If I had to compare them to a mainstream band, I'd say The Rentals. Most often, their vocals are a male/female blend with a great deal of volume. I'd say her vocals are very similar in style to that dog. Good pop-py stuff. I haven't seen them live, but I've heard good things.

If you got nothing better to do, go check 'em out. By the way, I'm not associated with either band, I'm just a big fan (especially of the former).

Well, I went and it was kick-ass! What a great night of duos! I was impressed with the crowd, too. Obviously my weak attempt to promote the show was unnecessary. I guess I just got used to summertime Red Rose shows where 20 people would show up, 'cause all the undergrads were at home.

Anyways, forget cassettes was awesome as always, although Beth's vocals were also way too low as always. I can't wait to hear what their album sounds like. I'm curious to know what she's singing about. How Doni can play THAT hard for 45 minutes astounds me. I supose it's all the keyboard breaks...

I was thouroughly entertained by mates of state. As great as their album is, their performance was that much better. The crowd got into it, which always helps. By the way, the Rentals comparison was WAY off. I shouldn't have said that. Unfortunately, I still can't think of a good comparison.

Was anybody else there? I thought I might have recognized some Features fans. (I was wearing a Mr. Bungle t-shirt with a blue robot if anyone cares)

I would've liked to go--but I live too far from Murf and it was a school night.

Keep us posted.

I think that as long as it is done sparingly, carefully, and tastefully, the occasional plug of another local band is fine on the board. I don't want a barrage of it, but they sounded interesting.

I don't mind when an established member of our little community plugs a local band (even if it's his own). However, I find it distasteful when someone from a band (or very close to a band) joins the board for the express purpose of promoting it.

"If you like the Features, you should come check out Mother's Saliva Grudge at the Boro on Tuesday." Really? I'll bet they sound a lot like the Features. Thanks for the tip.

Am I "established" or am I in big trouble? Or both?

I'm not in any position to declare you or anyone else as an "established" member of the board. But, for what it's worth, I would consider you to be. To me, you become a "real" member when you participate in more than three topics. I think that proves you're not here to stir up trouble (i.e. FeaturesRNotSoGood) or just to promote another band (i.e. whofan). But that's just me, and I'm known to be silly.

Carligula- you are a member for sure...at least in my opinion. And, I agree with TF and JC completely. (Not that anyone cares about my silly little opinion anyway.)

Carl...of course you're what TF would call an 'established' member. What I was amen-ing is that it's lame when people join the board just for the purpose of promoting another band.
