TOPIC: related show this saturday - with the privates
Posted  Wednesday, September 3, 2003 at 12:08 PM
Post 1 of 95
so i posted this somewhere on this site last night and it was there but i don't remember where... maybe in the "the features" section and i guess that's strictly things relating to the features and not its members. either way, fuck it, it's gone, this is here until whoever runs this thing deletes it too.

the privates (rollum with dave and ryan from character and keith from verde) will be playing this saturday night. they played their (i think) first show this past weekend at 12th&porter though i missed it so i don't know what they sound like. at any rate, show info:

saturday, september 6
the privates
mercator
the lone official
@the sutler (off 8th ave in nashville, near a bowling alley)
9pm

i hope some people can make it out to the show (unless this gets deleted before anyone can read it)

Kind of a jerky thing to say. Just cause you're new around here-- I'll let you know the score. Most of the site maintenance is done by a couple of extremely cool guys who go by the names BrianW and Michael. If they move or delete a post, most of the time they do so because they're told to do so by Rory or Meeks (Features management). BrianW went out of his way last week to create new forums to accomodate topics such as this one. If you'll take a second, you'll see there's a topic called "music" and it says something to the effect of (not a direct quote) "we know you like non-Features music, so let us know about it. This is an opportunity to promote your band's shows, too." I think it's pretty fucking cool a band (or its webmaster) goes out of its (his) way to nurture other (competing?) bands. It makes me sick how underappreciated the webmasters of this site are. They do an excellent job. Feedback is always welcome, but petty whining about this board is pathetic.

I agree that it becomes complicated when you're talking about a side project of a member of the Features, but I doubt Rollum really feels strongly about promoting the Privates through the Features website. I know for a fact that every member of the Privates post (or once posted) here. Unless for some reason you decided to adopt a new screen name to make this post, you're not one of them. I would be willing to bet money you're a member/friend of one of the other bands and want to get the name out there. That's fine. In fact, it's encouraged. Just do it in the right forum. And don't be a prick about it.

yo dude, not trying to be a jerk (though i'm not particularly concerned either way... it's the internet so who really cares?) and, from looking at the site, it's obvious the webmasters have got their shit together. i was slightly frustrated and a little surprised that things got deleted so quickly. i guess that's another nod to the webmasters to be so on top of this damn thing that they'd catch something like that.

as far as manners and being a "newbie" are concerned, i just figured i'd post this little show "ad" and, also being a "newbie", i don't know how things work around here and didn't even scroll down to look under 'misc' as i figured "features related, put in features section" so don't jump on my back either. if people are dissing your homeboys who run this thing, that hasn't got anything to do with me, though, like i said, it's the internet, so you can call me whatever you want, it's totally cool with me.

so, sorry for being a "prick" about it. i'm friends with the people in the other bands (with a few exceptions of people i don't know yet) and in the band mercator and figured that, yes, i'd promote the show here to get some features fans out and to mention it cos i don't come to this board and i don't even know how many of you know who the privates are yet. i seriously doubt rollum has a strong feeling, one way or the other, on what is mentioned here but that's just me.

i love that my first post on this thing got someone pissed at me. and, carligula, my friend, maybe you need to lighten the hell up... and i say that with as much love and respect as i can give to someone who obviously cares so much about a bulletin board on a band's website.

oh, and i love the features, so i'm not here only as someone who doesn't give a shit about the band whose board i'm using right now.

the rest of you, i hope to see you at the show. please come and throw shit at me for being such a bastard. i'm the guy in mercator who talks on the microphone and plays the yellow/goldish guitar.

Hey man, I totally see where you're coming from. I didn't mean any disrespect. I suppose calling you a prick was a bit harsh. I'm sorry about that. Seriously.

As you observed, yes, I'm just looking out for my "homeboy" and it wasn't entirely your post I was referring to, it was just yet another example of disrespect to a really good guy. I'm honestly surprised your post was deleted and not simply moved. I guess it was either an honest mistake or an executive decision that I trust was made for a good reason.

It's obvious to me that you think I'm a big loser for getting so worked up about a messageboard and you consider yourself cooler than that. If you consider using the opportunity afforded to you to offer a great deal of input into the music and performances of your favorite local band (as well as several others) and, in the process, make dozens of really good friends with like interests (a vast majority of which I eventually meet in person and start hanging out with), I guess I'm a big fucking loser. Thanks for the heads-up.

But first... our undercard bout. A perennial favorite... Seeeeeeeenaaaaaaah Sugarsick takes on all comers.

Sorry... had to get that out...

and oh yeah... go get 'em Carl!!!!

that's great that the webmasters moved the original thread to the appropriate place. there are just too many different places to post on this board and, being that i ordinarily don't use message boards much at all, it's a little confusing where the appropriate place for things are to me. but whatever, i'm stupid. these webmasters are on their game... i hope they're compensated appropriately.

for carligula, honestly, i don't think you're a "fucking loser" for spending your time and energy on this board. if it makes you happy, you should do that. i'm just saying that you shouldn't get so pissed at someone like me who is new to the whole thing and just trying to figure out what happened to their original post. afterall, with the internet, things like sarcasm and winks of the eye aren't easily noticable. i'm not looking to come to this place and start a fight, especially considering it's a "local" board whose members could easily read something i say as shit and then hate my band for no other reason than that while i'd much rather them like us having seen us with another band they like.

so, we'll just call it a fair shake and leave it at that, yeah?

and, peace frog, i enjoyed your little thing. i'm taking a dive here, however.

okay, back to painting the house, mixing a little music, and thinking of other message boards i could start shit on...

If all holds true to the wrestling that I watched in my youth, this means that Carl and the tape guy will be a tag team for the next pay per view. But, as we all know, they won't see eye to eye when they lose the match and a melee will ensue. Excellent.

I've often thought about who would fight who in a MB wrestling event. There would be two distinctive cliques, one consisting of Sexy Sadie, Ray Davies, Damon, Digsy, IWE, and HSS. The other being Carl, Sina, Lauren, and surprise guests that go to shows, but are too cool to post on the message board. As for me, I've been wanting a piece of that foldsfan bitch for a long time. Two out of three falls so I can kick his ass twice.

Whoa, Carl and the tapeman could be a tag team and fight their match, but after they win, Michael and BrianW ambush the tapeguy and Carl joins in. Then we all realize the devious plan they had from the get-go. That would be evil. Damn, you guys are assholes.

I hope we'll get to hear more of your opinions in the future. I'm also looking forward to checking out your band sometime soon. I'll try to introduce myself...

Forgive me Battletapes, but I cannot understand how you assumed that it was appropriate to advertise a show for another band in the Features talk section of our board. Okay, so Rollum's in the band, great, but it's still not the Features. I understand there's a lot of rooms around here, but we do provide nifty descriptions of what each board is intended for. It's obviously already been pointed out to you that it was not deleted but moved to the appropriate board. And you know don't worry about this -- if it's too hard for you to figure out where to post things don't stop posting, post wherever the mood strikes you and we'll be sure it finds its proper resting spot.

With that said I do hope everyone comes out for this show.

yo sinasugarsick,

you have no idea how much we suck. instrumental rock is not only boring but we're also horrible players and our songs are usually just me with my effects pedals and the other guys playing "C" over and over. i didn't realize people were writing it on the streets though.... damn it.

carl as in carligula? dude, you're so 9 hours ago with that... carl and i are best friends now and he's gonna be the best man at my wedding, assuming you'll still marry me.

people can throw beer all they want and if you didn't hear we sucked (though, if you ever call us a jam band to my face, you may be speaking through a tube in your fucking neck with one of those little talk box microphones), i'd say come out and throw beer at me (though if you throw the bottle, the same threat above applies).

keep up the hard work with the funny, it's starting to pay off... big time.

shit, i thought that sina person was a boy. goddamn it. actually, i don't make threats, i just like using dirty words. but i do hope this sina person shows up and is hot cos i'm on the prowl and maybe if i can't write a song worth a shit i can do something fancy in the bedroom.

i think that as far as instrumental rock goes, character and mercator are worlds apart, really. i don't think we're trying to do much of the same stuff (of course, this is only in comparison to each other as instrumental rockists).

and have you seen or even hear us sina? and wait... are you vickie's friend? i just noticed the sina thing. writing as i'm discovering things. hmm.. yes. maybe you are. though, if you are, i'm going to have to rethink this whole thing about having shit thrown at me cos i've heard about you... and i don't hit women back. (this is totally blowing up in my face... shit.)

at any rate, despite what i said, we don't suck. we're fucking good, though i'd leave that up in the air for most people to decide for themselves and, if people think we're fucking horrid, more power to them.

if anyone on this damn thing has actually heard us, feel free to chime in. we suck, we're great, whatever.

what it comes down to is, even if we are fucking horrible (and we haven't practiced in 2 weeks and our bassist can barely function from just having had surgery so it's definitely a possibility), the privates are playing and i hear they're kickass and lone official is playing and i know they're kickass. it's gonna be a kickass show with or without mercator.

Did you guys open for (Evansville's own) Mock Orange at the Slow Bar after the Flaming Lips show? If so, I saw you guys. I wasn't overly impressed, but I didn't think you sucked. I will also point out that I was already exhausted from the Uptown Mix, so my opinion has to be taken with a grain of salt.

yes, that was us. do you know the mock orange guys? they're from my hometown (well, i'm from a suburb of eville) and i've recorded with them a few times and what-not...

uptown mix was pretty exhausting... standing out there with all those people on a hill waiting to play in a few hours sucked, though i thought we played pretty well that night. if you didn't like us, that's cool, though, unless you're willing to watch us some other time and see if it sits with you any better, i wouldn't bother checking us out again. we're not for everyone (i realize instrumental rock can get kinda boring and, as poppy as we try to be sometimes, we're still playing for a certain group of music fans. i know that i, personally, don't listen to much of the stuff when i'm not playing it.

and i wouldn't say that i'm fucking with sina... now that i know who it is, and that she's a friend of a friend (though i don't know if she really hates us or if she's just joking as a friend of a friend... never met her before), i'm pretty much done there. i've heard stories, though, and i wouldn't be surprised if she did throw shit at us, if all of them were true. hopefully she'd rather chat cos i'd like to be able to put a face with the legend.

i can't believe that i started this whole thing that has backfired so much... unless it brings people to the show, in which case, i guess it served its purpose.

oh well, whatever, like i said before, it's the fucking internet.

Can we claim Keith in our clique? He fucks shit UP in a fight. On a related note, I think one or all of your band was in a home movie a friend & I made. wow, what seemed to be a resolved issue about "message board posting locations" between two obviously mature people, (car and battletapes) turned into an opportunity to make someone else feel like shit. WAY TO GO SINA!!!

you just couldn't wait to throw in "word on the street is that mercator sucks". Which by the way was completely irrelevant to the original topic. But hey, what good is the world if you can't make other people feel like shit for what they do. Right, sina? you knew that comment would stir shit up. this is what you wanted. I bet you fucking love this. You probably rush home everyday to get on your little computer and see what battletapes wrote next (which was uncalled for). if this is your life sina, it's pretty fucking sorry. and not worth existing.

Okay, that's just ridiculous. Sina doesn't even have a computer at home. She checks from work, silly. And this is not her entire life. She also enjoys going to shows and parties and pushing, screaming, clawing, hugging, grabbing, kissing, rubbing, and grinding other people. Now who sounds pathetic?

And for the record, she does love this shit, because she likes to be the center of attention. She especially loves it when she gets someone so worked up that they sign on for a username just so they can point out how pathetic she is. Seriously, do you see the irony here?

I mean, just ask uglyapeman. He did it. Whatever happened to that guy?

Oh, thank you so much for reminding me about that thread, Lauren. Yet another reason I'm proud to call you my triplet. Are you still saying that this current thread is your favorite, Stopforme? I would have guessed you would have said that one. If not that one, then the "Features Ringtones" thread. Definitely in my top 10.

yeah, you got me. my favorite threads are always the "whos going to the show?!" threads, actually. those are so interesting. honestly, i didnt like the "is sina hot" thread. i thought it was obvious, boring, and not that insulting. the "soap" thread comes to mind, though. its in the top 5.

if anyone on this damn thing has actually heard us, feel free to chime in.  we suck, we're great, whatever.
Hmmm...I enjoyed a show of yours I saw a long time ago, although it was a little too spacey for my taste. I'd better shut up now, though- gots to stay loyal to my posse. Can we claim Keith in our clique? He fucks shit UP in a fight. On a related note, I think one or all of your band was in a home movie a friend & I made. Do you remember being videotaped at the Slow Bar 2 years ago whilst sucking down brews?

Actually, I think it's pretty fucking funny, and I'm pretty sure everyone involved but you would agree. Does anyone else find it HILARIOUS that the current contender, battletapes, should ask whether sina is hot?
yeah, we're a bit spacerock sometimes.. i can get stupid with my pedals every now and then... i'm not sure what you mean by shutting up to stay loyal to your posse, though...

i'm not sure if we would have been in your movie or not. 2 of the 4 of us don't drink beer so it wouldn't have been me or our redheaded drummer drinking in the movie.... and i don't remember much about the other time we played at the slow bar (a few years back) but it was fun and it sounds great in there...

and yes, i do think it's funny, this thread. it's funny enough to have someone like me, who usually hates bulletin boards, coming back to "play" with the rest of you on a probably unhealthy basis (when i should be painting or mixing). i'm really not taking any of it serious outside of wanting to get some people to the show, though i do hope that your dear sina doesn't actually try to hurt any of us.... though that may be interesting as well. blood sells tickets.

i don't know her at all. never seen her and probably have no idea what she looks like, either. i've only heard OF her from vickie and some other friends... but i take it that i'm/we're in for some serious pain, eh?

she can't be that bad, though, or else i wouldn't think people would stick up for her and talk about her like she's their friend. i'm not worried... at least not that much. i'm much more likable in person when people know that i'm joking around.... though maybe she'll find i'm most likeable when i'm on the ground crying to god and bleeding.

The show was really great. I was surprised to see so many people clear out after The Privates played though. I figured after all of the hype on this thread they would at least find out what Mercator was about. The funniest part to me was seeing Aaron, their bassist, stare at the sports channel as he played bass. The bar maid got the remote and turned it off shortly after, she must have noticed too. Lone Official couldn't play...did anyone catch the first act? I missed it.

She did that last night, too. I was a little upset, considering it was a Titans game. I mean, don't get me wrong, I was loving me some IBL, but what's the harm? It wasn't like it was 5 different TVs directly over the band like at the 'Boro.

They were a pretty good act. It was a drummer and a guitarist/singer playing cute folk-pop songs. Apparantly, they were notified only hours earlier that they would be playing, so the rest of their band wasn't there. I still really liked them.

sina, you missed out. you may never get a second chance to throw beer like that and have it be justified. it's okay though, don't worry about it.

i was unsurprised to see that half the audience left. it seems to me that some people out there are music fans and some are just fans of certain bands and uninterested in actually experiencing different music. and that's fine, really, i was more than happy to play to the people who stuck around. as long as the people who left don't show up later on, interrupt a conversation that i was having with a member of the privates, just to say that they loved their set but were polite enough to bowl while the last band was playing and then do the whole interruption thing to someone they just ignored earlier in the evening as well. that was fantastic.

the privates were fantastic. kinda more glam-rock than i was expecting (70s glam, not big hair 80s shit). i love watching dave headbang, he looks fucking great.

lylas were told about 2-3 hours before load in that they were being offered a position on the bill. they played a stripped down set but they were also great... i really enjoyed them a lot. kind of in the vein of french or norweigan acoustic pop like kings of convenience (if they were poppier) or sondre lerche. very nice guys, as well.

as for aaron and watching tv... chris, our other guitarist, and i were watching aaron watch the tv (there was a baseball game on and aaron's a big ball fan) and having a laugh. i think that aaron was willing to do anything he could to get his mind off the pain he was enduring to play the show (having had a surgery about a week beforehand and still feeling the effects and drugs).

as for christy turning off the tv, i guess it was her saying "you're here to be entertained by a band" but, you know, i say leave it on if people want it on... who really cares? i mean, when you only have tables available and everyone's sitting down, for me, that already feels strange enough, you might as well give people an alternative to watching the show as well (cos, god knows, they're still gonna only hear the music)

thanks to any of you who came out, it was very nice to see a lot of people there, if only for the privates. thanks even more to those who stuck around for the whole show. i hope everyone enjoyed at least the bands they watched.

Myself, I came out of my way to see the show for the pure reason that I wanted to see the Privates. I left early to make good on previous commitments. As far as not being interested in different music, that's bullshit. Stop making assumptions or you'll just keep rubbing people the wrong way and they'll never want to see your band.

right on. i honestly don't give a shit about people coming to see my band. my agenda with this board was to get people aware of this show with a band featuring a member of the features... my band has played a lot of shows in the past and if it were my intention to get you all to see my band, trust me in that i would have written shit here a LONG time before this. it's funny how the people i've had interaction with on this board, for the most part (and excluding carl, who turned out to be a right on guy after we worked out our 'problem'), have been very quick to jump to defend things that they didn't even necessarily need to.

like i said before, there were a number of other great shows that night so i'm glad anyone showed up at all but you'd figure that some people DIDN't have other commitments that night and would have wanted to stick around. i guess not. i stand by my comment and if you still take that as a personal stab, whatever, i don't give a shit, it's really not my issue. people sticking around wouldn't have made ME feel that much better about my band, it would have only made me feel better about the audience as a group of people interested in music in general.

and trust me, i won't be promoting any more shows on this board, even if they were features-related, thank that christ guy with the cross and the stuff with the knives.

okay, maybe 'justified' was the wrong word (i just have that album stuck in my head right now is all)... maybe 'expected' is better... you know less of "what the fuck are you doing?!" and more "yeah, now pour some of the beer on my nuts and bite my wrist a little bit. yeah, i'm going to pull your hair a little bit and we'll see where this beer bottle will fit and who's daddy's naughty girl? you are, that's who. naughty girl needs to get spanked. take this knife and cut my chest a little..."

Hmm, glam rock. That's interesting. Never expected that one. Rollum's Roxy Music inspired drum flourishes must be capable of dominating any band he participates in. We have considered covering Eno's "Needle In the Camel's Eye." I, of course, will be Eno. Where can I get me some wings?

yeah, i wouldn't never known they were your friends if they hadn't begged me not to hurt you.

and fyi

i never got an answer
oh wait... you guys thought i was talking about pussy with the whole big muff thing! oh man! no, keith is a boy... and it would have worked better if i didn't type "big muff PEDAL" in my initial post. (cos i figured you sick minded little shits would have used that.) oh man.

they begged you not to hurt me cos they love me. i don't want you to hurt me either... at least not in a non-sex way. oh no, here we go again. i wouldn't never known either, by the way.

they probably wanted to leave you hanging on that question. see for yourself... that sort of thing, i guess. if you like skinny white dudes who shred and have shaggy hair, that's pretty much me. oh, and add "totally hilarious and hates vegetables." oh, and "hot."

ask vickie, i'm sure she has an opinion on my looks. or ask carl, he's seen me before (though maybe he wouldn't give you his opinion on my looks).

hey, i like the features and i like the privates! how about that? i like everyone! (though some of you got some stuff going on that makes me think you'd kill me if i had my back turned)

Are you sure you're not elliott/AllmanBrosfan/blightman??

This whole thing has been going on too long.

Allmanbrosfan isn't Elliott/Blightman, by the way.
I TOTALLY AGREE!

Keith, you are destined to rock. Never forget this.

Really?? I did not know that. After thinking about it, this isn't his M.O. anyway. It's still old.

obviously people are enjoying joking around on the whole thing and writing and/or viewing it or it would have been a dead issue a while back. yadadada, who said it was old, still found the desire to post 3 comments tonight alone. all i'm saying is that it's a stupid message board (and the misc section at that) and so, if people enjoy writing in it, it's obviously not that old. when people aren't saying my bands sucks in it or calling me a dick, i still think it's funny (even though all the "bad" stuff i still have a good laugh at as well). if you're bored with it, don't read it... i'm sure that the thread on you (yadadada) probably being the hot girl at the features show may keep your attention a bit more than this, which seems to pretty much involve just a handful of us. but, if you want, i'll ask about that here too... are you the hot one? sina, what do you think about her hotness?

oh, and i'm none of the people you thought i might be pretending not to be. at least not as far as you know.

and no, i don't mean any of this in a mean or negative way towards you, i'm sure you're a very nice girl... and maybe really hot from the other topic. haha

Since Sina, the resident judge of hottness, is not here to answer at the moment, I will step up to the plate and declare that Yadadada is indeed one very hot chick. Hell, I'd do her.

sorry, but i don't trust the opinion of someone who hooked up with the old horse looking guy from the moonie suzuki just because he's in a band.

Don't ask me how I came across this, but I found it to be a good half hour of reading. One of the best threads ever!

May I also say I'm really happy to see Sina's not so much of a bitch anymore. Or is she?

i'm impressed. i've gotten to the point where i dont read posts that are more than three lines long. thankfully sina's retorts are short and sweet. i'm sure that's one of her tactics.

bitch or not, i think she should be credited for the recent liveliness on the board.
